Strengthening the brother-sister bond, one Rakhi at a time

PESHAWAR: With drumbeats rolling in the background and worshipers breaking into spiritual dance, the Hindu festival of Raksha Bandhan was celebrated with religious zeal and spirit at the Kalibari Temple on Thursday.

The festival celebrated every August strengthens the brother-sister bond. The sister ties a Rakhi ? a holy thread?on her brother?s wrist and prays for his long life and well being. The brother showers his sister with sweets and presents.

The Hindu community gathered at the temple said that their happiness had doubled because Raksha Bandhan falls in August?a month when Pakistan got its Independence.

?On this day our Mata had tied a Rakhi on her brother?s hand, and she said that on this day every girl will tie Rakhi on her brother?s hand,? a worshiper at the temple explained.

?My sister has paid for my happiness and long life. It?s a special day for me,? a teenager at the temple said.

Tweeple were quick to assure Muslims they shouldn?t live in fear and offered to escort them to mosques through #IllWalkWithYou.

It is unclear whether the act was motivated by hate; nevertheless people started showing their support for Muslims on Twitter.

A similar trend had popped up on Twitter following the 2014 Sydney hostage situation. People had adopted the hashtag #IllRideWithYou to help Muslims living in Australia feel safe.

Murad?s intervention leads to release of six MQM activists

KARACHI: A day after the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) began a hunger strike unto death protest, six of its arrested workers were released from police custody on Thursday on the orders of Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah.

The men were arrested from the party’s Gulistan-e-Jauhar sector this past week. The CM had asked the city police chief AD Khowaja to release the men if they were not involved in any cases.

Murad said he did not wish to intervene in police’ affairs but could not allow any police official to detain innocent people. He said he was clear in his policy to make police stations public friendly and that no police officer would be allowed to harass citizens.

"Nobody in my government would be allowed to support criminals," the CM was reported to ahve categorically stated.

The IG had informed the CM that the men were arrested from the party’s sector in Gulistan-i-Jauhar and were included in an investigation; however, they were later informed to have been released.

The CM also apprised MQM’s leader of opposition in Sindh Assembly, Khwaja Izhar-ul-Hasan of his directives. "We are political people and do not believe in political victimization and neither have we ever intervened in political activities of any party," the CM told the leader opposition.  He assured Hasan that arrested MQM workers if found innocent would be released within a short time.

The workers released included Syed Arshad Ali, son of Syed Intikhab Ali; Mohammad Adeel, son of Shamsheer Ali; Syed Taleh Ali, son of Syed Azhar Ali; Waqas Ahmed, son of Nasar Ahmed; Gulam Murtaza, son of Ghulam Nabi Qadri and Zishan Bashir, son of Bashir Ahmed.

The chief minister hoped the MQM would end its hunger strike, now that he had taken notice of their demand.

Jahangir Park restoration

After getting done with the day’s meetings, the CM headed towards the Jahangir Park, in Saddar, without any protocol. Expressing displeasure over the piles of filth dumped at the site, Murad called for the garbage to be cleaned up.

"It is not only the government’s duty to maintain the park’s upkeep but the responsibility to keep it neat and clean also falls on each and every individual living in the vicinity," he said.

Angered at fruit and vegetable vendors surrounding the park, Murad claimed that it was the vendors and shopkeepers who had turned the park into a dumping ground.

He directed deputy commissioner (South) to get a compound wall constructed around the park and develop it properly. The area was one of the main areas of the city since people from far flung areas frequented it for shopping purposes.

"I not only want the park restored but encroachments from the entire Saddar area should also be removed.”

Sharjeel credits blitzkrieg 152 to English lessons

MALAHIDE: Sharjeel Khan said the Pakistan A tour in England had been pivotal to his compiling a stunning maiden one-day international century as the tourists romped to a 255-run victory over Ireland in Malahide.

The 27-year-old opening batsman hit 61 on his ODI debut three years ago but then scored just 123 runs in his next 10 games, losing his place in August 2014.

But on his comeback match on Thursday, he scored the third quickest 150 in an ODI as Pakistan hit 337 for six against a hapless Ireland attack.

Planning and preparation do not fit in with the cliche of mercurial Pakistan cricketers, who can be capable of sublime brilliance one day and abject failure the next.

The Test side, under new coach Mickey Arthur, arrived for a training camp in England before the start of their tour programme and were rewarded with a drawn 2-2 series against their hosts.

Many of the Test side won´t be involved in the five-match ODI series against England starting next week but, having been on the recent A tour, left-hander Sharjeel was equally well prepared for the similar conditions on show in Ireland.

´Natural game´

"The conditions helped me as I have been with the Pakistan A team in England for the last month. The tour was a good exposure for me," said Sharjeel.

"I hadn´t been in the UK before and this was my first time in Ireland, but I just played my natural game. It doesn´t matter if it is four-day, one-day, T20, domestic or international I play the same way.

"I am an attacking player, I play hard, watch the ball hard and it´s my natural game to hit sixes. The (Malahide) pitch was not easy but I waited for the full balls and they came nicely onto the bat."

Sharjeel faced a mere 85 balls to bring up his 150 - only South Africa´s AB de Villiers and Australia´s Shane Watson have reached the landmark quicker in an ODI - and hit 16 fours and nine of his "favourite" sixes, mainly with pull shots over backward square as the Ireland bowlers erred in length.

After his dismissal for 152 in the 32nd over, the experienced Shoaib Malik and debutant Mohammed Nawaz added 105 for the sixth wicket and when the returning Umar Gul then took three wickets in the space of 10 balls to reduce Ireland to 32 for four, the result was never in doubt.

Ireland scrambled past their previous ODI low total of 77 with six wickets down but lost their four for just one run as slow left armer Imad Wasim, familiar with the conditions from his time playing Irish club cricket, finished with five for 14, his best figures for Pakistan.

Nawaz, also promoted from the A tour, took his first wicket to add to his 53 runs from 50 balls and seems certain to get another chance in the second game between the teams on Saturday, although Pakistan one-day captain Azhar Ali was giving nothing away after the match.

"We will sit down tomorrow and think our plans and also how we are going to play against England (in the five-match series immediately afterwards) as we need to keep an eye on that as well," he said.

Ireland captain William Porterfield accepted his team were outplayed and added he was looking for a much improved performance next time.

"It´s a tough learning curve for young lads coming into the side, against some of the best players in the world," he said. "We were outskilled today and now it´s about the mental preparation to come back on Saturday."

Trump says he regrets past remarks that ?caused personal pain?

WASHINGTON: Donald Trump expressed regret on Thursday for remarks that "may have caused personal pain" as he sought to refocus his message in the face of falling opinion poll numbers in his first speech since a shake-up in his campaign this week.

"Sometimes, in the heat of debate and speaking on a multitude of issues, you don?t choose the right words or you say the wrong thing," the Republican presidential nominee told a crowd in Charlotte, North Carolina.

"I have done that, and I regret it, particularly where it may have caused personal pain. Too much is at stake for us to be consumed with these issues."

Trump has made his "tough talk" and brash style a selling point of his campaign for the Nov. 8 election, rarely apologising even in the face of criticism for past remarks from within his own party.

Trump recently faced a barrage of criticism when he attacked the family of a fallen Muslim American soldier. Khizr Khan, the father of Army Captain Humayun Khan who died in Iraq in 2004, had criticised Trump at the Democratic National Convention last month.

Facing a polling deficit against Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, Trump has tried to reset his campaign, announcing on Wednesday a shake-up of his senior campaign staff.

In the past week, Trump has abandoned his free-wheeling style of campaigning, instead using a teleprompter at every rally.

Trump?s new campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway, promised on Thursday the volatile Republican presidential candidate would stick to a more disciplined and uplifting message to voters in the final dash to Election Day without crimping his freewheeling style.

Conway said the candidate?s White House bid could preserve his "authenticity" and still move past a long string of controversies to focus on issues.

"We would like to take an uplifting, optimistic, policy-centric message directly to the American people," Conway told CBS?s "This Morning" show, adding she was confident the former reality television star could stick to a sharper message.

Bolt wins third Olympic 200m title

RIO DE JANEIRO: Usain Bolt won a third successive Olympic 200m gold on Thursday to keep his hopes of an unprecedented "triple triple" alive and deliver a perfect tonic to the doping-tainted world of track and field.

The victory in his favoured event was Bolt’s 13th individual world or Olympic sprint title from a possible 14 since he took athletics by storm at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The 29-year Jamaican timed 19.78 seconds for gold, Canadian Andre de Grasse taking silver with 20.02sec and France’s Christophe Lemaitre winning bronze (20.12).

As Guns N’Roses’ "Welcome to the Jungle" blasted out, huge cheers greeted Bolt, wearing black lycra shorts and a singlet in the green, gold and black colours of Jamaica.

The sell-out Olympic Stadium crowd, which has been criticised for its jeering of some athletes, were raucous in their welcome of the Jamaican star.

Bolt, in his favoured lane six, had Lashawn Merritt, the American 400m specialist and sole US hope of a medal after Justin Gatlin failed to make the eight-man final, just inside him.

Immediately out of the blocks, the Jamaican was quickly up on Lemaitre, racing in seven.

With the temperature around 27 degrees Celsius (84F) and the track shining after a light shower of rain, Bolt delivered electrifying control around the bend, hitting the back stretch in full tilt.

As the crowd roared, Bolt responded by moving into his famed "drive phase", head coming slowly up as part of the process that unleashes the full power from his long legs.

Eyes glued on the stadium’s big screen at the end of the 100m track, Bolt blasted through the line with a glance leftwards at the giant stopwatch.

There had been no easing up, but Bolt looked to be left disappointed with his time, ripping the numbers off his shorts and throwing them to the floor.

That was quickly forgotten as Guns N’Roses was switched for Bob Marley’s "One Love", and Bolt, draped in Brazilian and Jamaican flags, did a lap of honour to chants of "Usain Bolt, Usain Bolt!" after another amazing victory and eighth Olympic gold.

US sought ?leverage? with $400 mn payment to Iran

WASHINGTON: The United States acknowledged Thursday that it waited for Iran to release American prisoners before delivering $400 million in cash that it owed the country, but again insisted the payment was not a ransom.

"With concerns that Iran may renege on the prisoner release... we of course sought to retain maximum leverage until after American citizens were released," State Department spokesman John Kirby told reporters.

"That was our top priority," he said.

In January, five American prisoners were released as Washington granted clemency to seven Iranians and withdrew arrest warrants for 14 others.

Immediately thereafter, the United States helped airlift $400 million worth of Swiss francs and euros to Iran.

The money was delivered on January 17, just one day after a landmark nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers took effect.

"We were able to conclude multiple strands of diplomacy within a 24 hour period, including implementation of the nuclear deal, the prisoner talks and a settlement of an outstanding Hague tribunal claim," Kirby said.

"It?s already publicly known that we returned to Iran its $400 million in that same time period as part of the Hague settlement agreement," he said.

In early August, the State Department had said the prisoner release and delivery of money were completely separate, although Kirby acknowledged Thursday that the two were in fact related.

"I?m saying that the events came together simultaneously... it would have been foolish, imprudent, irresponsible for us not to try to maintain maximum leverage," Kirby said.

The ordeal has set off a tidal wave of condemnation from Republicans, who have questioned the timing of the two events and said the government paid ransom for the prisoner release.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump?s campaign said Thursday that the State Department?s acknowledgement "further cements Hillary Clinton?s role in crafting disastrous policies that have led to a more dangerous world."

Trump?s opponent, former secretary of state Clinton, was no longer serving as the nation?s top diplomat when the accord came into effect. Still, Trump senior communications advisor Jason Miller said that "by helping put together a deal that ultimately sent $400M to Iran that was likely used to fund terrorism, Clinton has proven herself unfit to be president of the United States."

The cabinet was informed that considerable part of portfolio under the CPEC had been energised while the remaining was in the pipeline.

The prime minister expressed his firm support for the Thar Coal project and stated that had its potential been exploited 50 years back, the nation would now have been anenergy exporter.

He added that work on the technical and vocational training institutes of Gwadar be done on a fast track basis, making them operational as soon as possible.

The prime minister stressed upon the ministries concerned to expedite the process of land acquisition for the hydel power projects and adopt a forward looking strategy for overall economic development including energy and infrastructure components so as to cater to the needs of the future generations.

Clinton Foundation to bar foreign, corporate funding if Hillary Clinton elected president

WASHINGTON: The Clinton Foundation will stop accepting foreign and corporate donations if Hillary Clinton is elected president and will stop holding the annual Clinton Global Initiative meetings whatever the outcome of the November election, a foundation spokesman said on Thursday.

Former President Bill Clinton told staff members on Thursday he would resign from the foundation?s board and that it would only accept donations from U.S. citizens and independent charities.

The former president also said he would hold the 12th and final Clinton Global Initiative in September.

The annual meetings have included current and former heads of state, corporate leaders and celebrities who discussed poverty, healthcare, development and other issues.

Foundation spokesman Craig Minassian confirmed the moves, which were first reported by the Associated Press.

The foundation has come under fire during Hillary Clinton?s Democratic presidential campaign, with Republicans charging that donors were rewarded with access to her and her aides as well as her husband while she was secretary of state from 2009 to 2013.

Other critics have said the foundation?s reliance on millions of dollars from foreign governments created conflicts of interest for a would-be U.S. president.

Clinton resigned from the foundation?s board after launching her successful bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.

She will face Republican Donald Trump in the Nov. 8 election.

The Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation, founded in 2001, has raised more than $2 billion for causes that focus on health and environmental issues, mainly in the developing world.

CM Balochistan assails Brahamdagh over Modi?s support

QUETTA: Chief Minister Balochistan Sanaullah Zehri on Thursday condemned the recent statement by in-exile leader Brahamdagh Bugti and said that he has proved that India is involved in terrorism in Balochistan.

The chief minister Balochistan while addressing participants in a function at Law College Quetta said that Brahamdagh Bugti “in return for few cents tilted towards Modi.”

Zehri said that those who gave people false hope of freedom, spilled blood in Balochistan. Poor people were given money to use them against Pakistan, he added.

Following the controversial statement by Indian PM Modi, patriotic citizens in Balochistan started protests and held demonstrations at Quetta, Harnai, Khuzdar, Mustang, Noshki, Sui and Dera Bugti. There was a shutter down strike in Bolan and Dhadar.

Narendra Modi in an earlier speech on Indian Independence Day had said that Balochistan, Gilgit and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) had thanked him a lot in the past few days for “raising issue of atrocities against them”.

It was reported that Brahamdagh Bugti had praised the statement by the Indian prime minister.

Brahamdagh Bugti is the grandson of the late nationalist leader Akbar Bugti and leader of the outlawed Baloch Republican Army (BRA). He’s currently in self-exile in Switzerland and often accused of indirectly propagating terrorist activities in Balochistan.

England ODI series tough challenge for Pakistani bastmen: Wasim

KARACHI: Former captain and Swing Ka Sultan Wasim Akram has said that the five-match ODI series against England will be a tough challenge for Pakistani batsmen.

Talking exclusively to Geo News, Wasim said that Pakistan’s performance in Test Cricket silenced all the pundits who underestimated Misbah and Co and leveling the series was a good sign for Pakistan Cricket.

However, he emphasized that ODIs are a different ball game and Pakistan will have to work really hard as England is a very tough team to beat at home.

“England has won most of the matches at their home ground, because they’re very much familiar to the conditions there, our ODI squad is also inexperienced in absence of Misbah and Younis,” said the former captain.

“There will be two new balls, although white ball is not getting much swing in England as compared to other cricket hosts, probably because of soft wickets, but still English bowlers are very confident and in high spirits. So, we’ll have to give a good fight and play with proper planning.”

Wasim, a veteran of 104 Tests and 356 ODIs, said the key for Pakistan will be the performance of openers.

“We will have to bat carefully, upper order must not lose wickets in attempt to make 70/80 runs in first 10 overs,” the former captain suggested.

“Keep wickets in hand, runs will automatically come and our bowlers are very much capable of defending any respectable total,” he added.

Pakistan will be entering ODI mode after level the Test series two-all against England and Wasim Akram feels that it was a good effort by Pakistan to silence all the critics who underestimated Pakistan.

"Pakistan’s Test performance was outstanding, everyone was saying that Pakistan would struggle, but they (Pakistan players) proved all the pundits wrong with their performances, which was quite unexpected as well,” Wasim said.

The former captain and one of the best bowlers seen by the cricketing world, termed Sami Aslam as “a very good find” for Pakistan Cricket and hoped that he’ll serve the country for long.

“The way Sami batted in Test series was outstanding, he showcased proper batting technique,”

“Batting is not just about playing shots, even I can play shots here and there, a good batsman is the one who can stay on wicket and play with proper technique, Sami is such one batsman,” he said.

FO slams Modi?s statement, Indian intelligence agencies

ISLAMABAD: The spokesperson for the Foreign Office on Thursday slammed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent statement regarding Balochistan and denounced Indian intelligence agencies, blaming them for terrorist activities in Pakistan.

In his weekly news briefing here earlier today, Nafees Zakariya, the spokesperson for the Foreign Office, said that Modi’s recent statement was an unsuccessful attempt to hide Indian atrocities in occupied Kashmir.

“Balochistan is a crucial part of Pakistan,” he said, adding, “Pakistani people are a victim of Indian intelligence agencies' subversive activities.”

Referring to the arrest of Indian spy Kulbhushan Yadav from Balochistan, the spokesperson said: “Kalbhushan and his network was involved in spreading terrorism and destabilizing activities in Karachi and Balochistan.”

Modi had sparked controversy on the Indian Independence Day on August 15 when he had alleged that Pakistan was a supporter of ‘terrorism’ and that the people of Balochistan, Gilgit and Kashmir had thanked him in the past few days.

Talking about the Kashmir issue, Nafees Zakariya said that Pakistan was ready to provide medical aid to the injured in occupied Kashmir. He said that more than 150 Kashmiris' vision had deteriorated in one or both eyes.

He said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif would raise the Kashmir issue at the UN General Assembly meeting next month and inform the world of the Indian atrocities in the region.

The spokesperson also slammed the Indian Home Minister for his recent remarks, saying that his statement went against the norms of diplomacy as well as against the Saarc charter.

He added that the Indian Foreign Secretary had still not replied formally to the letter written by his Pakistani counterpart inviting India to a dialogue on the Kashmir issue. He declined to comment on the media reports on the matter.

PIA asks passengers to treat airline as their own

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan International Airlines inaugurated its ‘premier service’ on 14th August amid much fanfare, but recent images have raised questions, not about the service, rather about those benefiting from it â€" the passengers.

Passengers not only treated the aircraft like a trash can, littering only on the seats and in the cabin but some also decided that complimentary lotions kept in the toilets were souvenirs that were to be had like freebies.

While the loss and damage is not crippling, it did warrant PIA’s spokesman to request the passengers to treat the airline and the recently inaugurated service as their own.

Soldiers raid village in Indian occupied Kashmir, one dead dozens injured

SRINAGAR: Indian soldiers raided a village in Indian-occupied Kashmir overnight in an attempt to quash ongoing protests, leaving one civilian dead and dozens injured, police and witnesses said Thursday.

Villagers said soldiers from a nearby Indian army camp ransacked homes in Khrew village and beat residents with bamboo sticks, leading to the death of a teacher.

"They beat up men, women and children and took away many young men with them. We discovered the battered body of Shabir Mangoo on a village street in the morning," said one villager who asked not to be named, fearing reprisals.

The Indian Army spokesman Colonel N.N. Joshi confirmed the raid on the village 25 kilometres (16 miles) south-east of the main city of Srinagar, saying "the incident is being investigated".

Indian occupied Kashmir has been in the grip of almost daily anti-India protests and rolling curfews sparked by the killing on July 8 of a popular leader, Burhan Wani.

"One person was also found dead after the raid," a police officer told AFP on condition of anonymity, adding that around 28 villagers were taken away by the soldiers.

The army raid ? the third in recent days ? comes after five weeks of unrest that have left more than 60 people dead.

India has clamped down hard on protests, with the army accused of using brutal tactics to suppress demonstrators.

"First the electricity went off and soldiers soon started attacking our home, beating up all of us including my 10-year-old niece," villager Ghulam Hassan told AFP from his hospital bed in Srinagar.

Dr. Nazir Chaudhary, medical superintendent at the main SMHS hospital in Srinagar told AFP 24 injured villagers had been admitted for treatment.

A daytime curfew in place across the territory was extended to night-time on Wednesday, with police forcing shops to close and soldiers setting up additional roadblocks and checkpoints to restrict residents´ movement.

Turkish police raid businesses allegedly linked to Gulen

ISTANBUL: Turkish police launched a vast operation Thursday targeting businesses suspected of financing US-based Muslim preacher Fethullah Gulen, accused by Ankara of masterminding last month´s attempted coup, media reported.

Prosecutors issued arrest warrants for 187 suspects including CEOs as part of the operation in the country´s economic capital of Istanbul and other provinces, CNN-Turk reported.

It said around 1,000 police took part in the operation in 204 addresses in 18 provinces, which included simultaneous raids in about 100 sites in several districts of Istanbul.

The search targeted big companies like Aydinli Group, Eroglu Holding and Gulluoglu Baklava.

Rizanur Meral, the president of the Turkish Confederation of Businessmen and Industrialists (Tuskon), was among the suspects wanted by authorities, the private Dogan news agency reported.

Founded in 2005, Tuskon has 55,000 members and is accused by the government of financing pro-Gulen activities.

The suspects are accused of "membership in a terrorist organisation" and "financing the activities" of Gulen, blamed by authorities for orchestrating the July 15 putsch, according to Dogan.

In a similar operation on Tuesday, Turkish police raided dozens of companies in Istanbul in search of 120 suspects including CEOs. Around 100 people were detained.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said late Wednesday that 40,029 state employees have been detained in the crackdown on alleged Gulen supporters in the wake of the failed July 15 coup, of whom 20,335 have been remanded in custody.

More than 5,000 civil servants have been dismissed and almost 80,000 others suspended, he said in an interview with TRT public television.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has vowed to eradicate businesses, charities and schools linked to Gulen, calling them "terror organisations" and "nests of terror".

Gulen, a reclusive cleric who has lived in the US since 1999, has been repeatedly accused of running a "parallel state" since a corruption scandal embroiling then premier Erdogan and several of his ministers erupted in 2013.

Gulen, in self-imposed exile in the United States since 1999, has denied the government´s accusations.

Ankara wants Washington to extradite Gulen to face trial back home, indicating that any failure to deliver him will severely damage ties.

US Vice President Joe Biden will travel to Ankara next week, the White House announced, in the highest ranking visit to Turkey by any Western official since the coup.

Democracy strengthened in Pakistan, say Washington experts

WASHINGTON: Scholars, journalists and a former US assistant secretary of state for South Asia while analyzing the state of affairs in Pakistan identified weaknesses and strengths in the current political setup, but were confident that while the military will be ‘dominating’ it will not derail democracy.

Speaking on the occasion former US assistant Secretary of State for South Asia Robin Raphel said, “The military does not want snap elections,” she was confident that elections would be held in 2018 but added that early elections would benefit Imran Khan.

Raphel and other participants argued that Pakistan’s armed forces do not trust Imran Khan because he is perceived to be a ‘loose canon’ â€" which may or may not be true.

Participants expressed confidence that democracy has been strengthened in Pakistan and it will be difficult to alter the democratic path the country was on.

Empowering provinces through amendments in laws has created improved the existing system in the country, another participant added.

Three dead, 120 wounded in eastern Turkey police HQ attack

ANKARA: At least three people were killed and another 120 injured on Thursday in a car bomb attack on a police headquarters in eastern Turkey, a local security source said.

The explosion, blamed by Defence Minister Fikri Isik on the outlawed Kurdistan Workers´ Party (PKK), happened in the garden of the four-storey building in Elazig.

Images on Turkish television showed severe damage to the building, with a large plume of black smoke rising from the headquarters.

Elazig is a conservative nationalist bastion and has been spared much of the violence that has struck the restive Kurdish dominated southeast.

Defence Minister Fikri Isik blamed the Kurdistan Workers´ Party (PKK) for the attack during an interview with the state-run Anadolu news agency.

"We will thwart the PKK like we thwarted FETO," he said, referring to Fethullah Gulen who Ankara blames for the attempted coup last month.

The PKK has kept up its assaults in recent weeks after the unsuccessful July 15 coup by rogue elements in the military aimed at unseating President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Eight people -- five police and three civilians -- were killed on Monday in a PKK car bomb attack on a police traffic control building on a highway leading southeast from Diyarbakir.

Two policemen and a civilian were killed in an attack on Wednesday night in Van, another city in the east.

Over 40,000 people have been killed since the PKK -- proscribed as a terrorist group by Turkey, the European Union and the United States -- first took up arms in 1984.

Increase in levy taxes struck down by Supreme Court

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has ruled that the prime minister cannot bypass the federal cabinet and approve any ordinance without its approval. With the same pen the SC has also declared the government?s notification increasing levy tax as null and void.

A three-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Justice Saqib Nisar while hearing the appeal against the increase in petroleum levy being declared null and void; delivered an 80-page verdict.

The verdict declared, that the government has the authority to increase or decrease taxes, however the federal cabinet requires time for legislation. No bill can be presented in the parliament for approval until approved by the federal cabinet and the prime minister cannot bypass his cabinet when it comes to legislation, the verdict adds.

The SC verdict further ruled that the restrictions outlined in the 1973 Rules of Business apply to the government and cannot be ignored. The prime minister, federal ministers or secretaries are part of the government but not the government themselves which comprises the federal cabinet and the prime minister.

The Supreme Court verdict further adds that changes in budgetary expenditures, the government?s discretionary powers and decisions on financials cannot be taken by the prime minister alone.

Therefore the government?s levy tax notification is null and void since it was not passed by the federal cabinet.

If the prime minister approves any such law without the federal cabinet?s approval, it will be deemed null and void and will have no legal value, the verdict adds. In the same light any increase in taxes by the federal secretary, revenue division or by a minister will be deemed null and void.

Pakistan?s e-commerce boom is here to stay

Pakistan?s e-commerce sector is growing, and rapidly. According to the Gulf News, the sector is currently worth $60 million and is expected to cross the $1 billion mark by 2020, fueled by foreign investments and the emerging mobile payment platforms among other factors.

Yusuf Hussain, director of the Islamabad Founder Institute, while talking to GN Focus said that the Pakistani e-commerce market has been helped by the improving security situation, burgeoning tech-savvy middle class, increased investments in the tech sector and growing popularity of online transactions.

About mobile payment platforms, he told the publication, ?With growing maturity, they are poised to make inroads into the cash on delivery models and expand the pie.?

Jamil Goheer, co-founder of Virtual Force, which provides technology platforms to startups, the rise of e-commerce has been driven by infrastructure development, GDP growth, strategic geolocation, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and technology upgrades.

?Businesses are reaching out to their consumers over various digital platforms and advocating for economic activity over the Internet due to lower costs,? he was quoted as saying by GN.

E-commerce has been growing at an ?astonishing speed?, fueled by the rise of social networks in Pakistan, said another tech entrepreneur Moeez Javed, founder of online fashion store Virgin Teez.

Introduction of 3G/4G was another major breakthrough that fueled the rise of e-commerce in Pakistan, according to Arzish Azam, founder and CEO of Just Price. He estimated that there are more than 2,000 online stores in Pakistan.

According to research by shopping portal Kaymu.pk, people aged 25-34 make up the highest number of e-commerce users, followed by the 18-24 group.

There are, however, several challenges that lie in the way of the e-commerce boom in the country. Red tape in the company registration process, the prevailing tax regime and the fact that almost half of Pakistan?s population resides in rural areas are some of the hindrances inhibiting the e-commerce sector.

Azam believes quality assurance, a complaint mechanism and on-time delivery are some of the things that need implementing to help the sector. ?If they prioritise the convenience of consumers then they?ll truly be able to replace offline shopping in the next decade,? he told GN.
