From isolation to triumph: Pakistan?s journey to the top

Pakistan have long been regarded as a talented yet inconsistent side, but through a combination of sheer hard work, application and a little help from some inclement Caribbean weather, the South Asian side sit atop the test rankings for a first time.

Misbah-ul-Haq´s men thrashed hosts England at the Oval, the venue of one of the country´s darkest moments in cricket, earlier this month to earn a 2-2 draw in the four-test series and prove to many that they can compete on any surface.

Last Wednesday, Sri Lanka completed a 3-0 whitewash of table-topping Australia to allow India to go top of the ICC rankings and when four straight days of rain denied the Indians a 3-0 series win in the West Indies, Pakistan were elevated to the top of the pile without bowling a ball.

"This is what cricketers play for and want to achieve in their careers. It is a reward for something we had planned as a group a few years ago and have worked extremely hard to achieve it," Misbah told reporters of the rise to the top.

Unable to play at home since a 2009 militant attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore and shorn of bowling prospect Mohammad Amir in the wake of a damaging spot-fixing scandal at the Oval in 2010, Pakistan have ploughed a lonely furrow in cricket´s wilderness.

Undaunted by the isolation, Amir has returned after serving a five-year ban and immediately added fire to a formidable pace attack that, supplemented by the guile of imposing leg-spinner Yasir Shah, can run through any batting order.

Led by the evergreen Misbah and his able aging cohort Younus Khan, their vital experience has enabled a younger generation of batsmen to shine as Pakistan have capitalised on the dust bowl pitches in their UAE surrogate home to see off all-comers.

In the last two years, Pakistan have beaten Australia and England at home, drawn with New Zealand, and earned impressive away series wins in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh before the 2-2 draw against the English gave the world notice of their class.

"For us, the number one ranking is not a destination but part of a journey," Misbah added. "Our long-term objective and strategy is to remain competitive, continue to challenge the top sides with good cricket and once again become the most followed side like the Pakistan teams of yesteryear.

"While climbing to the top has been a long and arduous journey, the real challenge for Pakistan is staying there and test series in New Zealand and Australia at the end of the year will be the biggest indicator of just how far they have come.?

Treason case registered against Altaf Hussain

KARACHI: A treason case was registered against MQM chief Altaf Hussain for his inflammatory speech yesterday that incited party workers to attack media outlets in Karachi.

IG Sindh AD Khawaja said on Tuesday that two cases had been filed against Altaf Hussain: one for treason for his anti-Pakistan speech to participants in the hunger strike organized by MQM and the other for inciting party workers to violent protests.

AD Khawaja said that the case had also been registered against Farooq Sattar and several other workers who participated in the hunger strike. The case pertains to the attack on ARY News' office in Saddar, vandalizing of property, arson and pelting of stones at police.

The case was registered at Artillery Maidan Police Station in Karachi, the police chief said.

MQM party workers took to the streets yesterday after Altaf Hussain, in an address from London, incited them to storm media outlets and chant anti-Pakistan slogans during the hunger strike.

In violent protests that ensued, party workers ransacked the offices of ARY News and damaged a mobile satellite van.

At least one person died and two other sustained injuries during the violent attacks in which around 2,000 party workers participated.

Modi agrees to hold talks with Kashmiris

ISLAMABAD: In his bid to reach out to the people of occupied Kashmir (IOK), Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed his deep concern and pain over the situation there and asked all the political parties to work together to find a ?permanent and lasting? solution to the problem.

Making an appeal for restoration of normalcy in the valley where the unrest entered the 45th day, Modi emphasized that there had to be a dialogue, the Indian media reported. An official statement issued after his 75-minute meeting with a joint opposition delegation led by former chief minister Omar Abdullah said the prime minister appreciated the constructive suggestions made by them during the talks and reiterated his government?s commitment to the welfare of people.

The 20-member delegation, comprising Omar and seven of his National Conference MLAs, Congress legislators led by PCC Chief G A Mir and CPI-M MLA M Y Tarigami, called on Modi and made an appeal for adopting a political approach for resolving the crisis and to ensure that the mistakes of the past are not repeated.

Immediately after the statement was released, Omar tweeted, ?We welcome the statement of the Hon PM @narendramodi ji and look forward to working together to find a lasting solution to problems of J&K.?

Omar told reporters after requesting the prime minister to find a political solution to the Kashmir issue so that a lasting peace was ensured in the state as well as in the country.

Modi emphasized the need for dialogue to find a "permanent and lasting solution" within the framework of the Constitution and also asked all political parties to work together to find a solution to the problems in the valley.

Expressing his "deep concern and pain" at the prevailing situation, the prime minister said: "Those who lost their lives during recent disturbances are part of us, our nation; whether the lives lost are of our youth, security personnel or police, it distresses us."

"The government and the nation stand with the state of Jammu and Kashmir," the prime minister said, and suggested that all political parties should reach out to the people and convey the same.

He expressed his commitment to the development of the state and its people, and appealed for restoration of normalcy in the state.

Kashmir has been witnessing unrest since the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani on July 8 and so far over 60 people have been killed.

Meanwhile, accusing the Centre of being rife with contradictions over their policy towards the Jammu and Kashmir, the Congress Monday said Finance Minister Arun Jaitley's recent tough stand on the occupied valley was on a whole different tangent from that of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was batting for a dialogue to find a lasting solution to the unrest in the state.

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Congress leader Manish Tewari said even after 44 days the situation in the IOK had not abated. "The finance minister went to Jammu and Kashmir and his comments implied that he felt there was no need for dialogue,? Tewari said.

Hurriyat chief Syed Ali Shah Geelani Monday said for the lasting solution of Jammu and Kashmir dispute, the Indian government must shun state violence and uphold international law.

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi pressed for a lasting solution to the Kashmir problem, Geelani said it lay in India adhering to the UN resolutions.

"By fulfilling its promises and obligations towards the people of Jammu and Kashmir, we understand the universal principle of 'right to self-determination' is the only road through which peace can be achieved in Jammu and Kashmir," the spokesman added.

Meanwhile, in the wake of continuous unrest, the centre Monday rushed 2,600 additional paramilitary forces to the valley.

Twenty-six companies (100 personnel in each company) of Border Security Force (BSF) are being dispatched to trouble-torn areas in the state for maintaining law and order, official sources said.

These forces are being drawn from Gujarat, Rajasthan and West Bengal and they are expected to reach the Valley in a day or two. Besides, an additional 30 companies of the force are also expected to be sent to the state in next few days after their withdrawal from the Amarnath Yatra duties, sources said.

In another development, the Supreme Court Monday agreed with the stand of the central government on unrest in the IOK, saying that the issue could not be dealt with by the courts.

?We must appreciate that certain dimensions of the issue cannot be readdressed in court. The situation in the state keeps changing by the hour for which there is no judicial remedy,? the court said.

Chief Justice T.S. Thakur?s observations came while the court was hearing a public interest litigation filed by Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) seeking protection of civil liberties of citizens in the state and imposition of governor?s rule in Jammu and Kashmir due to the unrest.

The bench asked advocate Bhim Singh, who appeared for the petitioner, to begin political consultations to resolve the issue. ?Do not make political statements here. Tell us if you want to go and meet the political establishment that can deal with the matter,? the court said, referring to a meeting between a delegation of the state?s opposition parties led by former chief minister Omar Abdullah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and asked Singh to join the delegation.

Intikhab Alam terms Pakistan Test raise to number one ?greatest achievement?

SOUTHAMPTON: The former coach and current manager of Pakistan cricket team Intikhab Alam has termed Pakistan’s raise to number one in ICC Test ranking as greatest achievement by young and struggling team in recent years.

Talking to Geo News in Rose Bowl Southampton, Intikhab Alam said that being number one in ICC Test Ranking is a great thing to be achieved, specially the circumstances Pakistan cricket is in for last eight years.

“Since the attack on Sri Lankan team, no team has visited Pakistan. We are forced to play games away from home for no team is visiting Pakistan, which is very frustrating for PCB, players and also for the fans,” he said.

“But, determined players didn’t let this situation overshadow the performance, they fought against the odds to silence those who said Pakistan cricket would not be able to survive and achieved the greatest milestone,” said the team manager.

Alam also praised Misbah ul Haq for his remarkable captaincy during the period, adding that Misbah deserves huge credit for what Pakistan team has achieved.

“Misbah is the best captain ever, he’s very hard working and humble. Players respect him a lot and he maintains a good atmosphere within the team,” he said.

PROUD MOMENT

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s former captain Shoaib Malik and fast bowler Wahab Riaz have said that they feel proud to be part of the team which has become the number one Test side and aimed that ODI squad will take the lead from Test squad to produce better results in future series.

“It is great to be number one, but I also believe that it is a high time that we work harder to stay on this position,” said the former Pakistan skipper Shoaib Malik.

“ODI team can also take the inspiration from the success of Test squad. The key to success of the Test team was consistency and I hope if we remain consistent in ODIs then we will also achieve better results in limited over cricket very soon,” Malik added.

He said that the task of vehicle inspection and physical verification will be performed at these offices. He said that the decision is aimed to provide facilities to the general public; terming it extremely necessary to save data of all vehicles and their owners in order to minimize the danger of terrorism.

Pakistan takes top spot from India in ICC Test rankings

LONDON: Pakistan clinched the top spot in the ICC Test team ranking table on Monday after the fourth day of the Test match between India and West Indies was washed out due to rain and ended in a draw.

Rain was the dominant factor in the Port of Spain Test match between India and West Indies, as play was washed out after just 22 overs on Day 1.

Misbah was delighted to become the first Pakistan captain to inspire his side to the top of the Test rankings, when he said: “There is no greater feeling than to achieve the number-one ranking in the most traditional and purest format of the sport. This is what cricketers play for and want to achieve in their careers.

"Number-one ranking is a reward for something we had planned as a group a few years ago and have worked extremely hard to achieve it. To top the Test table, which boasts some of the best sides and players, is something to be very proud of.

"I want to compliment everyone who has been involved in the process, including all the players, the support personnel, the management, as well as our loyal fans and followers who remained committed to us and continued to back and support the side through the good and not-so-good days.

"For us, the number-one ranking is not a destination but part of a journey. Our long-term objective and strategy is to remain competitive, continue to challenge the top sides with good cricket and once again become the most followed side like the Pakistan teams of yesteryears. If we can achieve these on a consistent basis, then I am sure there will more laurels like this down the line."

Pokemon's a no-go on Bangkok's roads as police chief orders crackdown

BANGKOK: The hunters have become the hunted. Police in Bangkok announced a crackdown on Monday against Thai drivers playing Pokemon Go following complaints that the craze was bringing further gridlock to an already notoriously congested metropolis.

The mobile app -- which encourages users to hit the pavements in search of digital monsters -- was made available in Thailand earlier this month delighting many in a country where Japanese subcultures have a significant following.

But the game has since sparked a flurry of headlines in the local press as well as unease among the kingdom´s military leaders.

"The police chief has asked all policemen to detain any Pokemon players who play while using the roads," deputy national police spokesman Colonel Krissana Pattanacharoen told reporters.

"People have a right to play the game but it must not affect other people´s rights," he added.

Colonel Veeravit Vatchanapukka, from the city´s traffic police, said teams of officers on motorbikes would stake out key arteries in the capital hoping to catch drivers in the act.

"We do not aim to arrest many people, instead we hope this programme will raise awareness with people about carelessness," he told AFP.

Bangkok is not exactly an ideal playground for Pokemon players.

The sweltering Thai capital is notorious for its long traffic queues while the World Health Organisation says Thailand has the second highest road fatality rate in the world.

Pavements are patchy and those that exist are often littered with hurdles ranging from street vendors and fire hydrants to potholes and tangled wiring.

But that hasn´t stopped hordes of players embracing the game in public spaces, including those jumping into cars and onto motorbikes to hunt down digital monsters.

Some of the city´s motorbike taxi drivers, who career through the gridlock at knuckle whitening speeds, are even offering hourly rates for Pokemon hunters.

Two weeks ago the spokesman for Thailand´s junta chief warned Thais against obsessive playing of the game.

"Thai walking culture is not like Japan and there are limited pavements," the spokesman added.

Turkey says Syria border region must be ´cleansed´ of IS jihadists

ANKARA: Turkey said on Monday Islamic State (IS) jihadists must be totally pushed out of the Syrian border region, after a weekend suicide bombing in the city of Gaziantep blamed on the group left at least 54 dead.

"Our border must be completely cleansed from Daesh," Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said in televised remarks, using an Arabic acronym for the IS group.

"It is our most natural right to fight at home and abroad against such a terrorist organisation."

A child suicide bomber, aged "between 12 and 14," is suspected of carrying out the attack in the southeastern city of Gaziantep near the Syrian border late on Saturday on the orders of IS jihadists, according to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Cavusoglu said Monday Turkey has already taken an "active" role in the fight against IS, allowing coalition forces to use a key base in the southern part of the country for air raids on the extremist group.

Quoting security sources, some Turkish media reported earlier the Gaziantep attack could have been retaliation by IS for an operation carried out by Ankara-backed opposition rebels against the jihadists in Jarablus in northern Syria.

Asked if the government supported the operation, Cavusoglu said: "We can back anyone, especially the moderate opposition fighting against Daesh on the ground."

"We will fight Daesh to the end and continue to support countries and forces fighting them," he added, without giving further details.

Cavusoglu said Turkey was a "prime target of Daesh" because the government had dried up the group´s resources of foreign terrorist fighters, placing an entry ban on 55,000 members and deporting around 4,000 suspects.

"In this sense we have dealt the biggest blow to Daesh," he said.

The foreign minister said Turkey and Erdogan played a key role in defeating the ideology of IS, adding: "Therefore, Recep Tayyip Erdogan is their number-one target."

Turkey was long accused of turning a blind eye to or even abetting the rise of IS in Syria, claims it vehemently denies.

However Western states say Ankara has begun to move strongly against the group and seal its borders to jihadist traffic after the attacks blamed on IS on its soil this year.

Qadri was Modi?s state guest, admirer in 2012

LAHORE: A legendary American comedian and film star, Julius Henry Marx, had once described ‘politics’ in a lighter vein: “Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedies.”

Although the above-mentioned definition of ‘politics’ was given by a comedian, it does convey a fairly serious message to the Pakistani politicians.

Addressing a reasonable crowd at Lahore’s historic Charing Cross on June 17 last, Pakistan Awami Tehreek chief Tahirul Qadri had lashed out at Nawaz Sharif for not ‘saying enough’ over the arrest of a high-profile Indian spy Kulbhushan Yadav and had bashed him for his ‘cordial relationship’ with the Narendra Modi regime across the border.

Well, as research tells us, this firebrand religious cleric-cum-politician is no alien to the incumbent Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi either.  Despite the killing of hundreds of Muslims in the Modi-governed Gujarat during 2002, Dr. Tahirul Qadri had accepted the status of a state guest in this state during his February-March 2012 visit to various Indian cities.

Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat state during Qadri’s visit, as he was a decade earlier when rioting had officially resulted in the deaths of 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus; though independent sources had estimated that up to 2,500 followers of Islam had perished in communal clashes.

Modi was then accused by Indian and international media of initiating and condoning the violence. The Times of India reported on Feb 27, 2012, “Pakistani Islamic scholar Tahir-ul-Qadri on his first visit to Gujarat thanked chief minister Narendra Modi for the security arrangements provided to him.

Qadri, known for his strong views against terrorism and extremism, however, refused to comment on 2002 communal riots. Qadri has been in Gujarat since Friday night to lay foundation stone of India headquarters of Minhaj-ul-Quran International in Karjan on Saturday evening.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the function in Karjan, he said he did not have knowledge of India's provincial states and its political leaders. "But it is my first visit to Gujarat and special Z-plus security arrangements have been made by the state. I thank the CM for this," he said. On repeated questions about the 2002 communal riots, Qadri insisted he did not come to Gujarat to speak about specific incidents, but termed them as unfortunate.

"My talk in letter and spirit is just for peace and harmony. Violence at any place, killing of mankind should be condemned, but I de-link it with the events (Godhra riots) you are referring to," he said. He also drew parallels between Quran and Bhagwad Gita.

Qadri struck a local chord immediately. "Tamam Gujarati mate dua karu chu. Khushal raho, hali mali ne raho. (I am praying for all Gujaratis. Live in prosperity and live in harmony)," he said.

Qadri said nobody can rectify whatever has happened in the past. "Nobody can regenerate or recreate past, but efforts should be made to prevent such events in future. The only way is to look for a better future, create an atmosphere of togetherness for which mutual tolerance is necessary," he said, stressing that his efforts are for inter-faith, inter-cultural harmony at global level.”

During his visit to Gujarat during February 2012, Qadri had spoken the essence of the Holy Quran and Gita for two hours on the local television network.

On January 17, 2013, a premier Indian newspaper “The Hindustan Times” had reported: “There's a lesser-known side to the Sufi cleric rocking Pakistan's establishment with his fiery speeches and mass marches: he has a knowledge of Hindu scriptures and made a controversial visit to Gujarat a year ago. Aware of his history of closeness to the army, politicians fret that the two may be working in tandem to displace the civilian administration. But Qadri, who is based in Canada, has a scholarly and secular side to him. His visit to Gujarat last February was marked by a two-hour televised address on the essence of the Gita and the Quran. And he was a state guest of the government of Narendra Modi, the BJP chief minister who still faces allegations of turning a blind eye to riots that killed Muslims in 2002.”

The newspaper had added: “Qadri's advice to Gujarati Muslims to shed their "sense of victimhood" riled many, as leaders of the prominent Jamiat-ul-Ulema Islam organization accused him of "praising the killer of Muslims.” Finally, he had to clarify that he "had stressed that no such unfortunate events like riots should repeat and those who perpetrated should face the law." BJP leader Chudasama, now a minister in the Modi cabinet, was at the event. He said Qadri advocated social and communal harmony and denounced Jihadi extremism. Chudasama had described him as "soft-spoken.”

Reporting from Hyderabad Deccan on February 29, 2012, another top Indian newspaper “The Hindu” had described how Tahirul Qadri’s Lincoln limousine had literally grabbed eyeballs.

“The Hindu” had stated: “A 30 foot-long Lincoln limousine attracted attention as it swished up the driveway at the Lake View guesthouse. Enquiries made, showed that the car with Ontario (Canada) registration plates, was made available for Pakistani writer Mohammed Tahir-ul Qadri. He is in the city on a week-long visit for meetings with the ‘Ulemas’ (Islamic Scholars). The 10-seater, white Lincoln 2005 has two 18 inch flat screen television sets, a DVD player, a satellite radio and a refrigerator. Other amenities in the luxury car include full-leather seats, hardwood floor and a cloth lining over the roof. The car has been in Hyderabad for a while now and is only taken out on special occasions. An attendant said that every time they needed to take it out, a day’s motor vehicle tax as applicable in Andhra Pradesh would have to be paid.”

According to Times of India, at Karjan where a sea of humanity had gathered to listen to noted Pakistani Islamic scholar Tahir-ul-Qadri, Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi sent a special message wishing the success of the programme. Modi's message, which was read out before the gathering, appreciated Qadri's works.

State's junior home minister Praful Patel, too, reached the venue to attend the programme, while the organizers also appreciated efforts made by Sonia Gandhi's political secretary Ahmed Patel.

Qadri informed the gathering that earlier when he had left Canada, he was issued permission for only a programme in Vadodara. "I thank the 'hukumat' of Hindustan (Government of India) for providing permissions for other places," he said. Later, he also showed an English version of Bhagwad Gita, which he referred to explain the message of peace.”

When contacted, a public relations person close to Tahirul Qadri said, requesting anonymity, Qadri was being quoted out of context.

Monitoring desk adds: In his Geo News programme “Naya Pakistan Talat Hussain Kay Saath”, Talat Hussain stated, “Today Tahirul Qadri is contending that the government is pro-Modi. The very Tahirul Qadri had praised Modi government in Gujarat in 2012. It may be recalled that the many countries including the US had imposed a travel ban on Modi after Muslims massacre in his state, but Qadri did not talk about it.”

Talat Hussain also played video clips featuring Tahirul Qadri praising Modi, eulogizing Indian democracy, degrading Pakistan’s democracy, and taking a neutral stance on Kashmir.

Qadri, while addressing a sit-in, showed a photograph of Indian PM Modi and the Chinese president sitting on ground in the former’s Gujarat home. He said, “the prime minister and president of the region’s two big countries are there. Modi has made the Chinese president sit on the ground.”

Hurling “shame” on Pakistani rulers, Qadri said, pointing to the picture, “This is the democracy” and culture.  In another clip, Talat Hussain showed how Indian Muslims had demanded Modi be hanged for Muslims massacre.

In yet another clip of Qadri’s interview with an Indian channel in March this year, he took a neutral stance on Indo-Pak issues. He said Pakistan accuses India of involvement in terrorism in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa and Karachi while politicians from both countries level accusations.

“But I will neither endorse Pakistan’s allegation, nor India’s. Pakistan-India enmity should come to an endm and we should spend our capital on peace, education and poverty eradication. Kashmir issue should be resolved through dialogue with an open heart. I have come with a message of peace and love. Both countries should improve situation [so that] people of the two countries could travel easily. They have relatives in both countries. The visa policy should be such that they are not made to wait for hours and the bar of three-month visa is not there.”

Quetta tragedy: Lawyers to observe Black Day on Sep 8

ISLAMABAD: President of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Ali Zafar said on Monday lawyers will do sit-ins across the country if the terrorists behind Quetta blast are not arrested.

Talking to the media in Islamabad earlier today, Ali Zafar condemned the Quetta Civil Hospital blast saying that the attack on the lawyers was an attack on the entire nation.

“This was an attack on justice. This was an attack on Pakistan’s legal system,” he said.

He announced that lawyers will observe ‘Black Day’ nationwide on September 8 to protest the attack, which killed 74 people and injured over 120 earlier this month.

The president of SCBA also called for the parliament to look into the matter if the government fails to carry out the measures needed to prevent such attacks in future.

He also criticized the Balochistan government, saying that it failed to deliver on its promises to the families left behind by the victims of the attack.

While talking to the media, Ali Zafar showed a photo of a suspect in the attack and demanded to know how the man managed to get in the midst of lawyers at the time of the Quetta blast.

“Where did this man come from? How did he manage to reach us at that moment?” Ali Zafar asked and demanded investigation into the suspect.

Samsung plans refurbished smartphone programme - source

SEOUL/SINGAPORE: Samsung Electronics Co Ltd plans to launch a programme to sell refurbished used versions of its premium smartphones as early as next year, a person with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

The South Korean technology firm is looking for ways to sustain earnings momentum after reviving its mobile profits by restructuring its product line-up.
As growth in the global smartphone market hits a plateau, Samsung wants to maximise its cost efficiency and keep operating margins above 10 percent.

The world´s top smartphone maker will refurbish high-end phones returned to the company by users who signed up for one-year upgrade programmes in markets such as South Korea and the United States.

Samsung would then re-sell these phones at a lower price, the person said, declining to be identified as the plan was not yet public.

The person declined to say how big a discount the refurbished phones would be sold at, which markets the phones would be sold in or how many refurbished devices Samsung could sell.

A Samsung spokeswoman said the company does not comment on speculation.
It was not clear to what extent the phones would be altered, but refurbished phones typically are fitted with parts such as a new casing or battery.

Rival Apple Inc´s iPhone has a re-sale value of around 69 percent of its original price after about one year from launch, while Samsung´s flagship Galaxy sells for 51 percent of the original price in the U.S. market, according to BNP Paribas.

Refurbished phones could help vendors such as Samsung boost their presence in emerging markets such as India, where high-end devices costing $800 or so are beyond most buyers.

Apple sells refurbished iPhones in a number of markets including the United States, but does not disclose sales figures.

It is trying to sell such iPhones in India, where the average smartphone sells for less than $90.Selling used phones could help Samsung fend off lower-cost Chinese rivals that have been eating into its market share, and free up some capital to invest elsewhere or boost marketing expenditure.

Deloitte says the used smartphone market will be worth more than $17 billion this year, with 120 million devices sold or traded in to manufacturers or carriers - around 8 percent of total smartphone sales.

Some market experts expect the used market to grow fast as there are fewer technology breakthroughs. "Some consumers may prefer to buy refurbished, used premium models in lieu of new budget brands, possibly cannibalizing
sales of new devices from those budget manufacturers," Deloitte said in a report.

Cannibalization Risk

Samsung´s refurbishment programme, details of which the person said could be finalised as early as 2017, could help the firm generate revenue from dated high-end smartphones returned by users upgrading to newer versions.

The company´s latest premium phones, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy Note 7, have received favourable reviews, suggesting cheaper, refurbished versions could be popular.

At U.S. carrier Verizon Communications, the Galaxy S7 edge with 32-gigabyte storage retails for $792 without subsidies, while the Note 7 costs $864.The programme could help Samsung defend market share in emerging countries by bolstering mid-tier sales.

Refurbished phones could also appeal to enterprise clients who want certain security or software products pre-installed on phones to give to their employees, the source said.

The risk of offering refurbished devices is that they could potentially cannibalise sales of Samsung´s other mid-tier devices.

Expectations for solid smartphone sales helped Samsung shares to a record 1.675 million won each on Friday, taking two-day gains to 7 percent and adding $15 billion in market value.

'Good-time' Indian officials under fire for Rio flop

NEW DELHI: As Olympic under-achievers India head home from Rio having failed to win a gold medal, its gate-crashing, selfie-taking officials have been accused of failing to help its athletes taste success.

A string of below-par performances saw India win just two medals at the Games, fewer than the six clinched during their best-ever performance in London four years earlier.

Badminton champion P.V. Sindhu´s silver towards the end of the Rio Games sparked an outpouring of national pride and celebrations, along with wrestler Sakshi Malik´s bronze.

But reports during the competition of Indian officials seemingly living it up in Rio, while athletes struggled to make it through qualifying, sparked anger back home and raised questions about the commitment of those in charge.

"Officials do not have the welfare of the athletes on their mind. All they are bothered about is having a good time," Aslam Sher Khan, India´s former hockey Olympian, told AFP.

"While other countries have scripted a turnaround in their fortune like the UK, we sadly continue to languish in mediocrity," he told AFP.

"We have become the laughing stock of the world."

Indian sports minister Vijay Goel has described as a "misunderstanding" reports that his entourage tried to muscle unaccredited people accompanying him into Olympic venues.

Rio organisers reportedly accused his entourage of "aggressive and rude behaviour" and threatened to cancel his accreditation, prompting Goel to deny any involvement.
The minister also sparked ridicule on social media after praising one of India´s athletes on Twitter, only to use a photo of a different one.

And the Indian Express newspaper accused him of spending his time in Rio taking selfies with "exhausted Indian athletes" -- after posting a picture of himself ringside with just defeated boxer Vikas Krishan Yadav.

The incidents come as little surprise to observers who have long accused sport administrators of being more concerned about protecting their own fiefdoms than targeting success.

At the 2014 Winter Olympics, India suffered the humiliation of being banned from flying its flag at the opening ceremony following corruption concerns.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) suffered a 14-month ban which was only lifted after it elected new leaders, excluding those who had been accused of corruption over the chaotic organisation of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

India´s only individual Olympic gold medallist, shooter Abhinav Bindra, said he was fed up with apathetic officials, some of whom were unqualified for the job and were not being held accountable for a lack of success on the field.

"I won´t get angry and spoil my own health. It happens every time and that is the way it is," the shooter, who won gold in Beijing in 2008 and finished fourth in Rio, told the NDTV network.

"We need a complete overhaul of the system. We need more experts coming in... I have no problem with a politician if he can bring something to the table."
India´s anti-doping officials were also left red-faced in Rio after wrestler Narsingh Yadav was banned for four years for failing drug tests -- overturning India´s earlier decision to allow him to compete.

Indian officials had cleared Yadav just days before Rio, accepting his defence that a rival spiked his food supplements, after failing two tests for a banned steroid.
The World Anti-Doping Agency swiftly challenged the decision in the Court of Arbitration for Sport which found "no evidence" of such contamination.

Indian politician carried through floods mocked on social media

NEW DELHI: A senior Indian politician was widely mocked on Monday after photos showed policemen carrying him through ankle-deep muddy water while inspecting deadly floods in the country´s centre.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan, chief minister of Madhya Pradesh state, was shown wearing crisp white trousers and white shoes and being carried aloft through the water in a field, trailed by his entourage.

The photo of a smiling Chouhan with his arms wrapped around the two officers made newspaper front pages and sparked an outpouring of ridicule on Twitter.

Most comments were lighthearted. In India, politicians are almost always flanked by a legion of fawning officials and security guards.

"Shame on #Shivrajsinghchouhan. So embarrassing #wetyourfeet my man," Twitter user Jennifer Fernandes wrote.

"#Shivraj training Indian athletes for 400M Relay 2020 Olympics," read another.

But Chouhan was also accused of abusing his position, with comparisons drawn to the treatment of British officials during colonial times.

Government officials were quoted as blaming overzealous minders for the incident. Another said Chouhan hurt his foot and there was also concern about snakes in the water.
Chouhan himself posted several pictures of his flood visit on Twittter but skipped the controversial one, while his office denied on Monday releasing the image.

Floods triggered by monsoon rains have claimed hundreds of lives across India. In Madhya Pradesh at least 15 people have died after rivers burst and flooded villages, the Press Trust of India news agency said.

An Indian TV journalist was sacked in 2013 after he filed a report about deadly floods while perched on a survivor´s shoulders. The reporter claimed the man who carried him while standing in ankle-high water had hoisted him onto his shoulders as a sign of respect.

Suicide Squad continues to rule box office, Ben-Hur bombs

LOS ANGELES: "Suicide Squad" held on for a third straight week as the top money-maker at North American box offices, easily brushing off the competition, industry estimates showed Sunday. "Ben-Hur," meanwhile, bombed on its debut.

"Suicide Squad" hasn´t been a favorite with critics, but moviegoers plunked down $20.7 million over the weekend to see Will Smith, Jared Leto and Margot Robbie play a band of criminals hired to carry out secret missions.

Since it opened three weeks ago, the movie has earned $262.3 million.

Trailing at number two for a second week was "Sausage Party," the raunchy animated comedy with Seth Rogan as the leading voice. It made $15.3 million, down from last week´s $34.3 million take.

"War Dogs," a new release with Jonah Hill and Miles Teller, opened in third place with $14.3 million in ticket sales its first weekend out.

A comedy-drama about two arms dealers in over their heads supplying weapons to US forces in Iraq, its blend of light entertainment and serious subject matter got mixed reviews.

"Kubo and the Two Strings" landed in fourth place on its first weekend out, pulling in $12.6 million.

Praised as visually stunning, the 3-D stop motion adventure fantasy set in ancient Japan is about a one-eyed boy on a quest who must battle the gods with a magical instrument.

The remake of "Ben-Hur," meanwhile, went down in flames its debut weekend in North American theaters, earning only $11.4 million and coming in fifth place.

The $100 million epic with Jack Huston as the chariot racing Jewish nobleman Judah Ben-Hur "derailed spectacularly" because it was apparently unable to get beyond its core Christian audience, Variety said.

Rounding out the top ten films of the weekend are:

-- "Pete´s Dragon" ($11.3 million)

-- "Bad Moms" ($8.1 million)

-- "Jason Bourne" ($8 million)

-- "The Secret Life of Pets" ($5.8 million)

-- "Florence Foster Jenkins" ($4.3 million)

Umar Gul raring to have a go at England

SOUTHAMTON, England: They say a fast bowler becomes useless once his knees go bad. But Umar Gul doesn’t buy it.

The seasoned Pakistan pacer, who has recovered from a serious knee injury, returned to the national line-up after almost 17 months last Thursday with an impressive haul of 3-23 in a 255-run One-day International triumph against Ireland at Malahide cricket ground.

Now the 32-year-old is raring to have a go against England in a five-mach ODI series which rolls into action in Southampton on Wednesday afternoon.

“It’s a tough series because England are a very strong team but I’m confident and am looking forward to leading the attack from the front as the team’s senior bowler,” Gul told ‘The News’ on Sunday.

Gul is almost certain to be a part of Pakistan’s pace battery with Mohammad Amir in the one-day series against England as skipper Azhar Ali sees him as one of his trump cards in English conditions.

It’s a huge turnaround for Gul, whom many rejected as spent force after a career-threatening injury ruled him out of action back in 2013.

Once Pakistan’s chief wicket-taker in all three formats, Gul struggled to find selectors’ attention. He did make a couple of comebacks after successfully undergoing knee surgery in Australia back in 2013 but was discarded because of indifferent form.

However, the script has changed for Gul who used his hiatus from international cricket to regain his fitness, form and rhythm.

“Failing to find a place in the national team, I was free in Pakistan. I knew that Pakistan were going on what is a long tour of England and felt that I might finally get a chance.

“I worked hard to keep myself prepared so that I was fit and in rhythm whenever the call-up came. I played in the Ramzan Cup in Karachi because no matter how much training you do, you have to play matches. I bowled with good rhythm and that gave me confidence that I will do well whenever I get a chance to play for Pakistan again.”

Gul’s chance came when the national selectors picked him ahead of another injury-prone pacer â€" Mohammad Irfan â€" for the one-day matches against Ireland and England.

Despite the fact that he has played 127 ODI and has taken 167 wickets, Gul admitted that he was under pressure in his comeback game against Ireland.

“Yes, there was pressure. I was coming back after more than 15 months and as a senior bowler there were lot of expectations,” said Gul, whose last international game before his outing at Malahide was an ODI against Bangladesh in April last year in Dhaka. He was axed again after failing to impress, finishing with figures of 0-53.

“But I was also confident and it helped as I bowled with good rhythm and played my part in the team’s win.”

Gul is now hoping to give his best against England.

“The way I bowled in the last match has added to my confidence and I am looking forward to giving my best against England,” he said.

“The team’s morale is high as we got a big boost after beating Ireland with such a big margin. If we play with the same zeal, I’m sure that we can achieve good results against England.”

Gul is buoyed by the fact that in the past he almost always managed to extract good assistance from English pitches and conditions.

“I have bowled well in England in the past. Now as the senior I hope to take along the junior pacers and together we will hopefully play a big role in England.”

Samia Shahid murder case: Father, first husband sent to jail on 14-day remand

JHELUM: Court on Monday sent prime suspect Chaudhry Shakeel, Samia Shahid?s first husband, and father Mohammad Shahid to jail for 14 days on judicial remand.

Police told the court earlier today that their work of evidence collection had been completed and sought to have Chaudhry Shakeel and Mohammad Shahid sent on judicial remand.

The court instructed police to present an interim challan for both the suspects in the next hearing.

The case hearing was adjourned to September 5.

Earlier this month, Samia Shahid?s first husband had confessed to strangulating her to death, police sources had confirmed.

?I strangled Samia to death using a dupatta,? Chaudhry Shakeel had said in a statement recorded with the police, according to sources.

Samia, originally from Bradford, had gone to visit her father in a village called ?Poteh? near Dina on July 14. Her family, who are also British nationals, were in Pakistan following a bereavement within the family.

She was found dead on July 20 in mysterious circumstances.

Samia Shahid?s family insisted she died of a heart attack. Later they changed their statement to claim that she had committed suicide.

Samia Shahid?s husband Syed Mukhtar Kazam however maintained that she was the victim of so-called ?honour killing? because she had rebelled against wishes of the family, divorced her first husband Shakeel and married him in Bradford in 2014.

England?s Wood will trouble Pakistan, warns Collingwood

BIRMINGHAM: Pakistan´s batsmen can expect Mark Wood to cause a "lot of problems with the white ball" when they face the England fast bowler during the upcoming one-day international series.

The warning has come from Paul Collingwood, Wood´s captain at north-east county Durham.

Wood, 26, has been troubled by persistent ankle injuries and hasn´t played for England since a Test match against Pakistan in Dubai last October.

However, he has been included in England´s squad for a five-match ODI series against Pakistan starting in Southampton on Wednesday.

Wood showed just how good a bowler he can be with a brilliant spell of four for 25 in his maximum four overs during Durham´s seven-run Twenty20 Blast semi-final win over Yorkshire at Edgbaston on Saturday.

Wood took two wickets for no runs in three balls to dismiss current England batsmen Jonny Bairstow and Gary Ballance before accounting for Liam Plunkett and Tim Bresnan.

He bowled Bairstow (three) with a near yorker-length delivery and dismissed Ballance for a duck when the left-hander´s glance was brilliantly caught at leg gully by diving former England all-rounder Collingwood.

Meanwhile Wood, who topped speeds of 90mph and moved the ball in the air and off the seam, made life so difficult for Joe Root, one of the world´s best batsmen, that the England star said: "He made me look as if I was batting with my hands and feet on backwards."

Wood was unable to repeat his heroics in the final, taking one for 25 as Durham -- who managed a modest total of 153 for eight -- suffered a four-wicket defeat by Northamptonshire.

But former England all-rounder Collingwood was in no doubt of Wood´s Twenty20 quality.

'Pure pace'

"He´s ideal for this form of the game because he knows he´s only got four overs to bowl and he´s going to try to bowl every single one at full tilt," Collingwood told reporters after the final.

"He´s not worried about second or third spells. He´s a genuine wicket-taker and in the current game of T20 cricket, where guys give themselves a base and want to hit out, it certainly gives you another thing to think about when you can get hit on the head at real pace.

"That´s why he takes his wickets. He got good quality international batsmen out today (Saturday) with pure pace. He´s a great man to have in a T20 side."

And Collingwood was confident Ashes-winner Wood´s fitness would hold up in the longer 50 overs per side ODI format, where bowlers are permitted a maximum of 10 overs each.

"Certainly in white ball (limited overs), he´s ready because, as I said he doesn´t have to come back for second and third spells," Collingwood added.

"He bowled 20-odd overs against Middlesex last week in a four-day (first-class, County Championship) game and obviously his body is still getting used to those sort of spells, but he is going to cause a lot of problems with the white ball, that´s for sure."

Saturday´s final saw Wood strike with his first ball to dismiss Adam Rossington, but he could no nothing as man-of-the-match Josh Cobb (80) and Northamptonshire captain Alex Wakely (43) took care to see him off in a key partnership of 120.

"He´s quick," said Wakely. "He bowled some quick balls out there -- he´s going to get back in that England team before long.

"We said ´it doesn´t matter if (his overs) goes for two or three (runs), just get through it and we can capitalise on the other bowlers."
