Around 1,000 bodies recovered from Balochistan in six years

ISLAMABAD: Nearly a thousand bullet-ridden corpses have been recovered from various parts of Balochistan in the past six years, official documents revealed, indicating a disturbing sign that the security of the country's largest province is worsening yet again. More than 51 percent mutilated bodies were identified as ethnic Baloch.

Official figures continued to reveal shocking figures further as stating that 22 percent dead bodies belonged to Pashtuns while rest of the bullet-ridden corpses either remained unidentified or belong to Punjabis, Afghan refugees or non-Muslims.

More than 940 dead bodies were recovered from various districts of Balochistan whereas Quetta remained the worst-hit district with 346 dead bodies were recovered since 2010, revealed figures prepared by senior officials assigned to swiftly execute the National Action Plan (NAP).

The confidential data, also exclusively available with Geo News (ASKKS Programme)/The News, further revealed that over 112 persons were still missing in the province. With these rights violations, official figures further shocked that over 658 innocent people lost their lives in sectarian incidents where total 1, 837 were killed either in target killings or other disputes after 2011 in the province. Over 3, 470 people were injured in terror or sectarian related incidents during this period.

Security forces, with help of intelligence agencies and operators of newly established Intelligence Fusion Cell (IFC) recovered over 498 dead bodies of Baloch during this period in the province which already lags behind other provinces in terms of over nine key social indicators.

Around 159 dead bodies of Pashtuns were recovered from various parts of the province while security forces could not identify 175 bullet-ridden corpses as their faces were completely burnt and spoiled. The police also recovered around 108 dead bodies of other people where some of them were identified as Afghan refugees and Punjabis.

The report also revealed that Kalat was the second largest district after Quetta where 268 dead bodies were recovered by law enforcing agencies. After Quetta and Kalat, over 171 dead bodies were recovered in this district by the police. In terms of worst rights violence, 2011 witnessed recovery of 203 dead bodies, 129 in 2015, 165 in 2014, 168 in 2013, 166 in 2012, 102 in 2010 and 17 bullet-ridden bodies were recovered this year (2016).

Official data further revealed that over 2,654 intelligence based operations were conducted by the law enforcement agencies soon after the Army Public School massacre in December 2016.

More than 335 criminals were killed and 73 were injured in these operations, data revealed, over 13,362 criminals have been arrested in last eighteen months. Law enforcement agencies have recovered 4,154 illegal weapons and 248,327 rounds of ammunition were recovered from criminals.

The Intelligence Fusion Cell took the lead over police and Levies as it arrested 7, 597 criminals, killed 288 terrorists and recovered 242,105 rounds of ammunition since the NAP started. On recent killings and recovery of dead bodies in Balochistan, Home Minister of the province Sarfraz Bugti said, "Balochistan witnessed a significant drop down in violence -- this momentum will go on by grace of Allah." In response to queries by media that fatal attacks on policemen and FC personnel were on the rise, he claimed, "We will not let Baloch separatists and other militants to flex their muscles yet again."

On this alarming situation, Senator (ex) Sana Baloch, commented: "Balochistan is in a political crisis and it needs a well-sequenced roadmap to undo the damage and reverse the cycle of violence."

In order to prevent further political and human catastrophe or repeat of another cycle of violence in the province, he said, "a combination of economic collapse, Talibanisation, sectarian menace, abductions for ransom, near-to-collapsed health and education infrastructures, corruption and brutally mismanaged governance have brought the province to the verge of a Somalia-like situation where the ordinary citizen begs state-backed criminals, gangs and mafias for safety and security."

PPP leadership gives green signal to extension of Rangers' stay in Sindh

DUBAI: The Rangers are here to stay in Karachi. The decision came during a top Pakistan People?s Party leadership meeting held on Sunday in Dubai.

Former president and co-chairperson Pakistan People?s Party (PPP) Asif Ali Zardari gave approval for the long overdue decision of extension of the Rangers? stay in Sindh, sources said.

The meeting in Dubai was jointly chaired by PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Co-Chairman of the party and former president Asif Ali Zardari.

According to PPP sources, it was also decided in the meeting to provide special policing powers to Rangers as well.

Zardari directed the Sindh Government to approve a summary related to the extension of Rangers? powers in Karachi immediately.

Rangers and the Sindh government are at crossroads over several cases including the arrest of former PPP minister Dr Asim Hussain who has been in the paramilitary custody for almost a year now.

However the row deepened when Asad Kharal was arrested by the paramilitary force near Hyderabad.

Muhammad Ali alias Asad Kharal, a PPP worker and alleged ?front man? for key figures in the Sindh provincial government, was accused of corruption worth millions of rupees.

The move was followed by CM Sindh Shah expressing dissatisfaction in a meeting with Corps Commander Karachi Lieutenant General Naveed Mukhtar over the Rangers exceeding powers in Sindh.

Since 2013, acting under powers bestowed on the paramilitary force under Article-147, the Pakistan Rangers Sindh conducted multiple targeted operations in interior Sindh during which 533 suspects were arrested. Those detained were handed over to the Police and various law enforcement agencies.

Syrian refugee arrested after killing woman with machete in Germany: police

BERLIN:  A 21-year-old Syrian refugee killed a woman with a machete and injured two other people on Sunday before being arrested in the southern German city of Reutlingen, a police spokesman said.

The asylum-seeking Syrian man had been involved in previous incidents causing injuries to other people, he said.

The spokesman had no immediate information on when the man arrived in Germany, or when the previous incidents took place.

The assailant was apparently acting alone, the police official said.

"There is no danger to anyone else at this time," he told Reuters.

No further details were immediately available.

It was the fourth act of violence against civilians in Western Europe ? and the third in southern Germany ? in 10 days.

On Friday, a deranged 18-year-old Iranian-German who was obsessed with mass killings, shot dead nine people in Munich before turning his gun on himself as police approached.

On July 18, a 17-year-old youth who had sought asylum in Germany was shot dead by police after wounding four people from Hong Kong, some of them severely, with an axe on a train and injuring a local resident near the city of Wuerzburg.

Four days before, a Tunisian delivery man drove a large truck into crowds celebrating Bastille Day in the French Riviera city of Nice, killing 84 people.

Daesh( Islamic State group) claimed responsibility for both the Wuerzburg and Nice attacks.

German police said the Munich gunman had no connection with militants or the issue of refugees in Germany.

Sartaj to Swaraj: ?Only Kashmiris can give verdict on future of Kashmir?

ISLAMABAD: Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz Sunday said the verdict on the future of Kashmir could only be given by the people of Kashmir not, Sushma Swaraj, the External Affairs Minister of India.

Indian External Affairs Minister had said that the whole of Jammu and Kashmir belongs to India and Kashmir will never become part of Pakistan.

Responding to the statement of the Indian External Affairs Minister, he said, ?Such a verdict on the future of Kashmir can only be given by the people of Kashmir and not by the External Affairs Minister of India.?

This right has been promised to the people of Kashmir by the United Nation (UN) Security Council, Sartaj Aziz said in a statement issued by the Foreign Office.

He said it was high time that India allowed the people of Jammu and Kashmir to exercise this right through a free and fair UN-supervised plebiscite.

Once the majority of the people of Kashmir have voted for joining either Pakistan or India, the whole world would accept this verdict, he added.

Sushma Swaraj had also objected to the statement of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in which he had called Kashmiri leader Burhan Muzaffar Wani a martyr.

She had said that for India Burhan was a wanted terrorist.

In this regard, Adviser Sartaj Aziz said,? Here again India cannot ignore the fact that over 200,000 Kashmiris participated in the funeral prayers of Burhan Muzaffar Wani in 50 different locations throughout Indian occupied Kashmir despite strict curfew clamped in the valley which still continues 15 days after Wani?s extra-judicial murder on 8 July 2016. Let us not forget as one Indian writer has reminded us that not long ago the British labelled Indian freedom fighters as traitors and terrorists because at that time India was considered an integral part of the British Empire.?

He said the government and the people of Pakistan remained firmly committed in their moral diplomatic and political support to the Kashmiris indigenous movement for self-determination and resolution of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions on Kashmir.

Pakistan, he said, urged the UN, international community and the human rights organisations to play their role in stopping the Indian atrocities in the Indian occupied Kashmir against innocent and defenceless Kashmiris.

Even in India conscientious voices have raised concern over the brutalities and reign of terror unleashed by the Indian forces in IOK, he added.

Rangers' extension issue to be resolved soon: Khosa

DUBAI: Pakistan People?s Party (PPP) Secretary General and former Governor Punjab Latif Khosa on Sunday said that the issue of Rangers? extension in Sindh would soon be resolved.

Speaking to reporters in Dubai, he said that chief minister can constitutionally summon Rangers in aid of police in the province.

?Indeed, Rangers have done a fine job. However, it is wrong to say that police have not played any role.?

Khosa said that issue of extension of Rangers powers would soon be resolved ?in the interest of the people?.

Replying to recent statements of Interior Minister, he said that Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan should stop issuing threats.

?You cannot interfere in provincial matters like this, Rangers operation should be carried out nationwide if it is that important?, said former Governor Punjab.

He alleged that the pro-coup banners in Islamabad were put up on the orders of Nisar.

?Chaudhary Nisar wanted to create differences between the Prime Minister and army so that he could become the PM?, Khosa alleged.

He said that all was not well in Punjab and the province has become a haven for crime.

Khosa alleged that Azad Jammu and Kashmir elections were not conducted in free and fair manner.

He said that the Indian forces were oppressing innocent people in occupied Kashmir.

?Kashmir is our jugular vein, every single Pakistani child is standing with Kashmiris?, he said.

He further said that Pakistan army is the best military in the world and General Raheel Sharif is the best commander.

Khattak admits failure to bring 'change' in KP

PESHAWAR: Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Pervez Khattak on Sunday admitted to have failed in fulfilling promises made with the people in the province, adding, "The things Imran Khan asked to do in 90 days cannot be completed even in five years".

Speaking at a press conference here, Khattak said the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chairman seeks completion of years of work in days. He added even five years were not enough for promises Khan asked to fulfill in 90 days.

He admitted that the PTI-led provincial government could not achieve all targets in the province saying there are several impediments in its way. "Some people do not admit their mistakes, but we are unlike them," he added.

Imran is a leader who believes in concrete results and wants undertaken tasks to be performed in least of time, he explained.

Shrugging off opposition by disgruntled party members, the chief minister ruled out any uprising within the provincial chapter of the party.

"PTI stands united and we all would work together. There is no rebellion within the party ranks and files," he said. "Groups are often formed in parties and that is an internal matter."

Munich gunman planned shooting for a year, played violent video games: officials

MUNICH: The 18-year-old gunman who killed nine people in a shooting spree in Munich had been planning his crime for a year but chose his victims at random, officials said on Sunday.

According to reports from US media, officials said investigators had discovered the gunman was an avid player of first-person shooter video games, including the popular "Counter-Strike".

They added that the attacker had illegally purchased the pistol used in the deadly rampage through the "dark web".

"He had been preparing (the shooting) for a year," Bavarian police chief Robert Heimberger told a news conference.

Chief prosecutor Thomas Steinkraus-Koch added that he did not specifically choose his victims.

"It is not the case that he deliberately selected" the people who he shot, he said.

Europe reacted in shock to the third attack on the continent in just over a week, after David Ali Sonboly went on a shooting spree at a shopping centre on Friday before turning the gun on himself.

Officials said Saturday that Sonboly, a German-Iranian student, had a history of mental illness.

Investigators said they saw an "obvious link" between the killings and white supremacist Anders Breivik's massacre of 77 people in Norway exactly five years earlier.

Chancellor Angela Merkel said Munich had suffered a "night of horror".

No arrests in Amjad Sabri murder case: Karachi police chief

KARACHI: Additional Inspector General (AIG) Karachi Mushtaq Mehar on Sunday denied that any arrests had taken place pertaining to the assassination of Qawwali maestro Amjad Sabri.

Earlier media reports suggested the arrest of a suspect linked to the high-profile murder case, with some media outlets reporting that he had confessed to his role in the killing and also named some accomplices.

The Karachi police chief, however, rejected all such reports asserting that no arrest has so far been made in the case.

"Several people were detained on suspicions of their alleged role in the assassination. They were however released after no evidence was found against them," he said.

The top official also denied issuance of the suspect's image, as reported in local media.

Mehar went on to say that it is a high-profile case and lamented efforts to affect investigations into it.

On June 22, renowned Qawwal Amjad Sabri was gunned down by unknown assailants in Karachi's Liaquatabad area. Sabri was shot multiple times and succumbed to his wounds on his way to a local hospital, police said.

Amjad Sabri, 45, was one of South Asia's most popular singers of the 'Qawwali', Sufi devotional music that dates back to more than 700 years. He was the son of renowned Qawwal of the 1960?s, Ghulam Farid Sabri, and the nephew of Qawwali icon Maqbool Sabri who passed away in 2011.

His brutal assassination came as a shock to almost everyone, with condolences pouring in from not just within, but across the border as well.

Thousands gathered to offer his funeral prayers the next day and the famed Qawwal was laid to rest next to his father Ghulam Farid Sabri in Paposh Nagar graveyard amid tears and sobs.

Tigers kill one, injure one in China wildlife park

BEIJING: Tigers at a wildlife park in Beijing killed one woman and injured another after the pair left their vehicle following an argument, Chinese media reported Sunday.

The attack took place at Beijing Badaling Wildlife World Saturday, Chinanews.com reported, when one of the women left the vehicle following an altercation.

A tiger quickly attacked her and dragged her off, prompting the second woman to leave the vehicle in an attempt to help, it wrote on its microblog account.

Another tiger mauled her to death, before carrying off her body.

The two women were accompanied by a man ? who aided the rescue attempt ? and a small child, who were uninjured, it said, adding that the park has been ordered to close for "rectification."

The park allows visitors to drive their own cars safari style through an open space where the animals roam free.

Visitors are cautioned not to alight from their vehicles.

A report on online news portal Sohu said that park personnel quickly rushed to the women´s aide, but were too late to save one of them.

The injured woman is recovering from her wounds in hospital, it added.

There was no mention of the incident on the park´s web page or social media account. A post on its microblog said that it was closed due to heavy rains.

The park has had at least one previous tiger attack, Sohu said, noting that a security guard was mauled to death in August 2014.

Suicide bomber kills at least 15 in Baghdad

BAGHDAD: A suicide bombing claimed by the Daesh (Islamic State group) killed at least 15 people in northern Baghdad on Sunday, security and medical officials said.

The bombing, which struck near a checkpoint in the Kadhimiyah area, home to a major shrine, also wounded at least 29 people, the officials said.

Daesh (IS) issued a statement claiming the attack, saying it targeted soldiers and pro-government paramilitaries in the area.

A Daesh (IS) suicide bomber struck shoppers in Baghdad?s central Karrada district earlier this month, killing 292 people.

The group also claimed an attack on a shrine in Balad, north of the capital, that left 40 dead a few days later.

IS overran large areas north and west of Baghdad in 2014, but Iraqi forces have since regained significant ground and are conducting operations to set the stage for the battle to recapture Mosul, the last Daesh-held city in the country.

The militants have responded to the battlefield setbacks by striking civilians, and experts have warned there may be more such attacks as the militants continue to lose ground.

England look to level series as Pakistan collapse to 57 for four at Old Trafford

Manchester: Joe Root’s double ton and Chris Woakes’ late three-wicket haul put England firmly in command against Pakistan at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Pakistan lost four wickets in quick succession late in the day, managing 57 off 24 overs in response to England’s 589-8 declared in the first innings at stumps on the second day of the second Test at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Chris Woakes tore through Pakistan batting, claiming three for 18 in six overs as he sent Mohammad Hafeez, Azhar Ali and nightwatchman Rahat Ali back to the pavilion. Hafeez, Azhar and Rahat were 18, 1 and 4, respectively.

England all-rounder Ben Stokes, who returned to the side after a knee injury forced him to sit out the first Test at Lord’s, had Younis Khan caught behind at 1.

Earlier in the day, Joe Root’s career-best 254 helped England post a solid 589 on the scoreboard, as he became the fourth England batsman to score a double ton against Pakistan in a Test match (after Denis Compton 278, Nottingham 1954, Ted Dexter 205, Karachi 1962 and current captain Alastair Cook 263, Abu Dhabi 2015).

Woakes and wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow contributed 58 each to the England total. Skipper Alastair Cook scored 105.

England have not lost at Old Trafford since 2001 and have not lost a home Test batting first since 2012.

Pakistan trailed England by 532 runs at stumps on Saturday. They lead the four-match series 1-0 following their 75-run triumph in the first Test at Lord’s last week.

China builds massive seaplane: state media

BEIJING: China has completed production of the world´s largest amphibious aircraft, state media has said, the latest effort in the country´s program to wean itself off dependence on foreign aviation firms.

The state-owned Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) unveiled the first of the new planes, dubbed the AG600, Saturday in the southern port city of Zhuhai, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The aircraft, which has a maximum range of 4,500 km (2,800 miles), is intended for fighting forest fires and performing marine rescues, it said.

At around the size of a Boeing 737, it is far larger than any other plane built for marine take off and landing, Xinhua quoted AVIC´s deputy general manager Geng Ruguang as saying.

However, its wingspan is considerably smaller than that of the H-4 Hercules, known as the Spruce Goose, which was designed in the 1940s to carry Allied troops into battle. It is regarded as by far the largest seaplane ever built although it only ever made one flight, in 1947.

The Chinese plane, which is targeted at the domestic market, will be "very useful in developing and exploiting marine resources," the article said, adding that it could be used for "environmental monitoring, resource detection and transportation".

Beijing is currently locked in disputes with several of its neighbours, including Japan, Vietnam and the Philippines, over the rights to develop economic resources in waters off its shores.

The AG600 could potentially extend the Asian giant´s ability to conduct a variety of operations in the South China Sea, where it has built a series of artificial islands featuring air strips, among other infrastructure with the potential for either civilian or military use.

Xinhua said AVIC has received 17 orders for the plane so far.

China is seeking to develop its own aviation sector to reduce dependence on and even challenge foreign giants, such as European consortium Airbus and Boeing of the United States, though analysts say it could take years.

Despite a history of delays and problems, China´s aviation industry has made rapid progress in the last year.

In June, the Chinese-made ARJ21 -- which stands for Advanced Regional Jet for the 21st century -- made its first commercial flight, when Chengdu Airlines flew one from its home base to Shanghai, and the country´s military began using its homegrown Y-20 heavy transport plane earlier this month.

It rolled out the C919, China´s first domestically developed narrow-body passenger plane, in November last year.

JIT formed to question MQM leader Waseem Akhtar

KARACHI: A Joint Investigation Team (JIT) was constituted on Sunday to interrogate Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) leader and party?s nominated candidate for the Karachi mayor slot Waseem Akhtar.

According to the notification issued by SSP investigation, the seven-member JIT has been formed under DSP airport Iftikhar Lodhi.

The team also includes the special investigation officers from five different police stations in the East zone.

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Karachi had handed over Wassem Akkhtar to police on physical remand till Monday. It had been earlier reported that Akhtar, who was sent to the Malir jail, would be interrogated by SSP Rao Anwaar, a cop with a history of bad blood with the party.

There are allegations on Waseem Akhtar of assisting party Chief Altaf Hussain in delivering provocative speeches.

Akhtar, Rauf Siddiqui and other MQM leaders face the same and the cases against them were registered in different police stations of the city. Some speeches were delivered against security institutions after Rangers had raided the MQM headquarters Nine-Zero and its adjoining areas on March 11 last year.

Police had earlier arrested MQM leaders Waseem Akhtar, Rauf Siddiqui, and Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP) Anis Qaimkhani on Tuesday after an ATC in Karachi rejected their bail pleas in the Dr Asim Hussain case.

The three politicians face charges of facilitating the terrorists who were provided medical treatment at Dr Asim?s hospital.

Rio-bound Indian wrestler fails doping test

New Delhi: Indian wrestler Narsingh Yadav has failed a drugs test, the country´s anti-doping agency said Sunday, raising doubts about his inclusion in the Olympic squad less than two weeks before the Rio Games begin.

Yadav, a Commonwealth Games gold medallist, qualified for next month´s Olympics in the 74-kilogram freestyle category, but tested positive for a banned steroid during routine testing.

A subsequent sample known as a B sample was also found to be positive.

"Narsingh was personally present when his B sample was opened," National Anti-Doping Agency director general Navin Agarwal told the Press Trust of India news agency.

"He appeared before a disciplinary panel yesterday (Saturday). The panel sought more reports regarding the matter," Agarwal said.

Agarwal said a decision had not yet been made on removing the 26-year-old from the Rio-bound squad, adding it was "too early to comment".

"We will try to complete the whole thing quickly."

Further hearings would be held into the case, the government said in a statement, confirming the positive test but not naming Yadav.

There was no immediate comment from Yadav, the son of a milk vendor, who won gold at the Commonwealth Games in 2010 but came home-empty handed from the London Olympics two years later.

The news could open the door for champion wrestler Sushil Kumar, India´s most successful individual Olympian.

Kumar failed to qualify for Rio despite winning bronze at the 2008 Beijing Games and silver in London, both in the 66-kilogram freestyle category.

Kumar launched a legal battle to win the right to compete against Yadav for the sole spot in the Indian squad for the 74-kilogram category, after his 66-kilogram favourite event was axed.

But Delhi´s High Court last month sided with the International Wrestling Federation which ruled that Yadav, a 2015 world championship bronze medallist, had already qualified.

The Olympics start on August 5.
