Rangers extend Karachi Operation to other parts of Sindh

KARACHI: It seems that the Rangers have expanded the ?Karachi? operation to other parts of Sindh.

Two days ago Rangers arrested a Pakistan People?s Party worker Asad Kharal from Larkana. He was accused of corruption worth millions of rupees. He was later set free by his supporters who fought the Rangers.

A few weeks back Rangers conducted a targeted operation in Hyderabad where they arrested three workers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement?s zonal committee. Suhail Mashadi, Rafiq Ajmeri and Raheel Faheem were released after interrogation.

At Dhabeji, Thatta, Rangers carried out a raid where they arrested 10 people including workers of a political party from Water Board colony.

A shootout between Rangers and robbers occurred at Shikarpur. Two Rangers officials lost their lives in the attack.

A few months ago, Rangers conducted an operation in Shahdadpur over intelligence reports. MQM worker Waqqas Ali Shah?s alleged killer was arrested in the raid. Rangers claimed the alleged killer was also a worker of MQM.

The operation againt criminal elements in Pakistan?s commercial hub was initiated back in September 2013 after the federal cabinet empowered Rangers to lead a targeted advance with the support of police. Since then Rangers have extended their powers every few months when they expire.

Pak-American woman to lead seventh largest US law firm

LAHORE: A Pakistani-American woman, Faiza J. Saeed, is poised to become the 16th presiding partner in the nearly two-century-old history of a renowned American law firm Messrs Cravath, Swaine & Moore with effect from January 1, 2017.

The 50-year-old Faiza is the daughter of a New York-based Pakistani immigrant family and has majored in Molecular Biology and Economics from the Berkley University.Among the 200 largest US law firms in 2015, only three had women as managing partners, according to a study by the National Association of Women Lawyers.

The firm placed second in Thomson Reuters? ranking of legal advisers on mergers in 2015, after Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, with 97 announced transactions worth $926.5 billion, while it was ranked seventh between January and June 2016 with 40 transactions worth $166.6 billion.

The New York Times has reported: ?One of the biggest deal makers at Cravath, Swaine & Moore, a pre-eminent law firm on Wall Street, is poised to take over its top spot ? and become the first woman to do so. Cravath plans to announce on Thursday that Faiza J. Saeed, one of the two leaders of its mergers practice, will become the 16th presiding partner in the nearly two-century history of the law firm. Ms. Saeed?s 25 years at the firm have been punctuated by some of the most prominent corporate deals in recent history.?

Faiza was quoted as saying: ?I?m honored to take the role. I think it?s going to be a great opportunity to focus more on Cravath, both on our strategy and maintaining our excellence.?

The esteemed American newspaper added: ?Ms. Saeed will take over from fellow corporate partner C. Allen Parker, who will return to advising clients full time after spending three years in the top role. She is scheduled to assume the post, the highest at Cravath, on Jan. 1, though she will first serve as deputy presiding partner through the end of the year. And she will be in very rarefied company. The move is being made as Cravath ? which traces its lineage to William H. Seward, the secretary of state under Abraham Lincoln ? has continued to ride high among Wall Street?s cadre of deal makers. It has never been one of the biggest law firms in the country, with just 471 lawyers in Midtown Manhattan and London. But it has long been involved in some of the biggest transactions, and is considered a leader in the legal field in matters like compensation. When Cravath raised its pay for first-year lawyers to $180,000, several of its peers followed suit, as is the norm in the American law industry.?

The New York Times has gone on to write: ?Ms. Saeed has been one of Cravath?s top rainmakers for years. She helped defend Time Warner against an unwanted takeover bid by Rupert Murdoch and advised on DreamWorks Animation?s nearly $4 billion sale to Comcast. Almost two decades ago, she helped advice Vivendi in its $34 billion takeover of Seagram. She advised Precision Castparts as it negotiated its $37 billion sale to Berkshire Hathaway, the biggest takeover by Warren E. Buffett. She is working on Yahoo?s efforts to sell itself, a process that may end in a multibillion-dollar sale as soon as next week.?

About Faiza?s profile and professional background, Bloomberg writes: ?Ms. Faiza J. Saeed is a Partner at Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP. Ms. Saeed is Co-Head of Cravath?s Mergers and Acquisitions group. She joined Cravath in 1991 and became a partner in 1999. Ms. Saeed focuses her practice primarily on mergers and acquisitions, both domestic and cross-border, and on takeover defense and corporate governance matters. She is Member of the American Bar Association, New York State Bar Association, Association of the Bar of the City of New York, and the California State Bar Association. Ms. Saeed is a Visiting Committee Member at Harvard Law School and has been designated a Young Global Leader in 2006 by the World Economic Forum.?

Truck attacker kills at least 60 in French city, driver shot dead

PARIS: At least 60 people were killed and dozens injured when a truck ploughed into a crowd watching a Bastille Day fireworks display in the southern French resort of Nice, prosecutors said early Friday.

Nice prosecutor Jean-Michel Pretre said the truck drove two kilometres (1.3 miles) through a large crowd that was watching the fireworks on France's Bastille Day national holiday.

The driver, who drove at high speed along the famed Promenade des Anglais seafront before hitting the mass of spectators, was shot dead, sub-prefect Sebastien Humbert told France Infos radio.

Humbert described it as a clear criminal attack, although the driver was not yet identified. Residents of the Mediterranean city close to the Italian border were advised to stay indoors. There was no sign of any other attack.

Almost exactly eight months ago Daesh (Islamic State) militants killed 130 people in Paris. On Sunday, France had breathed a sigh of relief as the month-long Euro 2016 soccer tournament ended without a feared attack.

"Dear Nicois," local mayor Christian Estrosi tweeted, "The driver of a truck appears to have killed dozens of people. Stay at home for the time being. More news to follow."

Regional newspaper Nice Matin quoted its reporter at the scene saying there were many injured people and blood on the street. It published a photograph of a damaged, long-distance delivery truck, which it said was riddled with bullets and images of emergency services treating the injured.

Damien Allemand, the paper's correspondent, was quoted as saying: "People are running. It's panic. He rode up onto the Prom and piled into the crowd ... There are people covered in blood. There must be many injured."

Social media carried images of people lying apparently lifeless in pools of blood.

US government agencies have received constant reports of Daesh (Islamic State) threats to attack France and those threats are regarded as current, a US security official said. However, two US officials said they had no information at this point about whether militants were involved in the Nice incident.

CNN said it has spoken to a witness, identified as an American pilot, who saw the truck ramming the crowd. The witness said the driver mowed people down, accelerating as he hit them. The witness said there was only one person in the truck.

Local mayor Estrosi has warned in the past of the risk of extremist militant attacks in the region, following Daesh (Islamic State) bloodshed in Paris and Brussels over the past 18 months.

French President Francois Hollande, who was in the south of France at the time, had hours earlier said a state of emergency put in place after the Paris attacks in November would not be extended when it was due to expire on July 26.

"We can't extend the state of emergency indefinitely, it would make no sense. That would mean we're no longer a republic with the rule of law applied in all circumstances," Hollande told journalists in a traditional Bastille Day interview.

Sania Mirza outsmarts TV host over 'sexist' question

Tennis ace Sania Mirza outwitted an Indian TV anchor after being asked about her plans for motherhood and 'settling down'.

Married to former Pakistan skipper Shoaib Malik, Sania Mirza released her Autobiography 'Ace Against Odds' yesterday in Hyderabad. In a televised interview with host Rajdeep Sardesai, the tennis star was asked about her plans for motherhood.

"Amidst all the celebrityhood, when is Sania going to settle down.....What about motherhood? Building a family?" asked Sardesai."It seems like you don’t want to retire yet to settle down."

In an outburst, Sania responded: "You don't think I am settled? You sound disappointed that I am not choosing motherhood over being number one in the world."

She, however, went for answering the question saying: "This is one of the questions we have to face all the time as women....Unfortunately, that's when we are settled and no matter how many Wimbledons we win or number ones we become, we don't become 'settled'."

The response humbled Sardesai forcing him to apologize instantly.

"I must apologize. I think I phrased that question very badly," said the anchor. "I promise you are right, I would not have asked that to a male athlete".

The answer seemingly pacified the tennis star who said: "I hope that a few years from now, a girl, when she's 29, is not asked the question when she’s going to have a child when she is number one in the world."

Misbah becomes oldest Test centurion in 82 years

LONDON: Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq became the oldest player to score a Test century for 82 years when he reached three figures against England at Lord?s on Thursday and celebrated by performing an impressive series of press-ups.

The 42-year-old?s achievement was all the more impressive as this was also his first Test at the ?home of cricket?.

Not since England?s Patsy Hendren made a century against Australia aged 45 at Manchester?s Old Trafford ground back in 1934 had an older player scored a Test hundred.

Remarkably, this was also Misbah?s first Test anywhere in England, with selection decisions having kept him out of previous tours.

It looked as if Misbah was about to celebrate his achievement by prostrating himself on the Lord?s turf in prayer.

But instead he performed a series of press-ups in what appeared to be a joke aimed at critics who questioned whether he is now too old for international cricket.

The gesture also looked to be a wry reference to the pre-tour ?army-style? training camp the squad were put through at the Pakistan Military Academy in the northwestern town of Kakul.

Pakistan were in trouble at 77 for three when Misbah came to the crease on Thursday.

He was dropped on 16 by Joe Root, who grassed a tough slip chance off fast bowler Steven Finn.

And he would have been run out for 58 after a mix-up with Asad Shafiq if Gary Ballance had hit the stumps.

Misbah was severe on off-spinner Moeen Ali, reverse and conventionally sweeping him for four fours in an over.

Another reverse sweep off Ali took him to 99.

He then nearly fell to England?s leg trap when he popped up a chance just in front of forward square off Finn.

But a single off Finn down to third man saw Misbah to his 10th century in 62 Tests off 154 balls with 17 boundaries.

India firm gifts Trump 6,000 tea bags to cleanse his soul

NEW DELHI: An Indian company Thursday said it had sent 6,000 green tea bags to White House hopeful Donald Trump, believing they would help him to become "smarter" and cleanse his soul.

The unusual gift ? which equals four years supply if drunk four times a day ? was from Kolkata-based Te-a-Me Teas, its executive director Sumit Shah told AFP.

Shah also said the company had set up a website ? www.teafortrump.com ? where people could tweet a message to Trump and urge him to drink the tea daily.

"We firmly believe green tea can do a lot of good to people. We thought green tea will help him (Trump) cleanse his mind, body, and soul," he said.

"Green tea is also proven to make people smarter. So our message is, please Mr Trump drink the tea. For your sake, for America?s sake, for the world?s sake."

Trump, a political novice, and a real estate tycoon, has riled critics with his radical views on Muslims and immigrants during an often vitriolic presidential campaign.

Next week, Trump is set to be formally nominated to run against his Democratic rival, former secretary of state Hillary Clinton.

The Indian tea company said it wanted to instill responsible leadership among famous personalities across the world and denied the move was a publicity gimmick.

"We don?t even sell in the US. I guess with Trump it?s just about the timing (of our gesture)," Shah said.

Injuries and crime reports go up as Pokemon Go takes the world by storm

On July 6, 2016, Niantic Labs released Pokémon Go, an augmented reality based game on iOS and Android devices in Australia and the United States. News of the game spread like wildfire, especially amongst millennial, as more and more people were drawn to this unique gaming experience. The game proved to be a massive success, its release adding nearly $11 billion to Nintendo?s value.  Pokémon Go has proved to be so popular that, according to Forbes, it is about to surpass Twitter in the number of daily active users on Android. The game became the top grossing app in the IPhone store last week after its release in US, Australia, and New Zealand.

Video games generally are blamed for spreading laziness and weight problems because of the players not moving for hours while playing. However, people playing Pokémon Go are posting about it being an encouragement for physical exercise. While there are games like Dance Dance Revolution and Wii Fit that motivate fitness, Pokémon Go has become a popular way for people to go outside and walk around looking for pocket monsters. The game being an augmented reality based game makes players walk to different places to be able to catch different Pokémon. Due to this, players? fitness applications on their phones, like Fitbits, are recording an increase in the amount of distance walked.

Its popularity comes with a caveat, however, as reports indicate a rise in crime and injuries related to the game. Police in Missouri claim four suspects used Pokémon Go to lure victims and conduct armed robberies over the past few days. In Wyoming, a teenage girl found a dead body floating in the river one morning as she was outside playing the game. Social media has also been abuzz with users sharing tales of injuries sustained whilst walking around searching for Pokémon?s.

Police are now asserting that users stay aware and play the game with caution, especially when alerting strangers of their location. Police reports in Missouri claim Armed robbers used the game?s geological location to lure victim to isolated areas. In another incident,  the game led a teenager to a dead body in a river. Police officer after investigating the body stated ? The death seemed to be accidental in nature.?, Though the water was only 3ft deep where the body was found, investigators said the man possibly drowned. Australian police have also requested that players look up from their phones whilst crossing the streets.

On the other hand, the game?s limited release has led the rest of the world to download the game on their phones illegally as they try to keep up with the hype, whilst others wait for Nintendo to officially release the game before experiencing this augmented reality for themselves. Pokémon Go is also capturing the interests of Pakistanis. Thousands of people in Pakistan play the game and share their experiences on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. This goes to show how people could not wait for the game to be released in their country and wanted to try it as soon as it was released. There are groups on Facebook, dedicated to Pokémon Go, sharing locations that they pinned on Google maps, to find the pocket monsters in different cities of Pakistan.

Whilst the struggles of the game are real and any injuries sustained serious, the game?s popularity on social media as people document their experiences is a refreshing break from the usual debates on political events and celebrity gossip.

Security agencies save Islamabad from catastrophe

ISLAMABAD: Security agencies saved Islamabad from a catastrophe by apprehending 13 terrorists who had entered into the capital intending for a bloodbath, revealed Inspector General (IG) Islamabad Tariq Masood Yasin on Thursday.

Briefing the Senate Committee on Interior, the IG Islamabad said 13 terrorists carrying arms and ammunition in their backpacks entered into the capital in the first week of June with intent to target a university and a hotel.

An intelligence agency, after intercepting a phone call, informed about terrorists' presence in the capital and their ulterior motives," he told. "The same day the Safe City Project was to be inaugurated.

After being tipped off the imminent threat, the law enforcers closely watched out for any suspected activity through security cameras installed under the Safe City Project, Yasin told legislators.

Vehicles were checked, while police pickets were regularly guided from the control room as to which car needs to be inspected thoroughly, the official briefed. The capital police worked for 72 hours and hence saved the city.

Asked about any arrests made, the IG said let this be under covers. Acknowledging the effectiveness of the Safe City Project, he said that it should be extended to other cities as well.

US parliamentarians have no realization about Pakistan?s sacrifices in war against terror: Nisar

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan on Thursday said Pakistan and its citizens have sacrificed a lot in the war against terror but it is regrettable that US parliamentarians have no realization that how much it lost to curb the menace.

According to a statement, United States (US) Ambassador to Pakistan David Hale met with Chaudhry Nisar and discussed matters relating to bilateral ties and cooperation and overall regional security situation.

During the meeting Ch. Nisar expressed deep concerns overstatements of some US Congress members and other officials regarding the role of Pakistan in fight against terrorism.

The minister said such statements cause a strong reaction in Pakistan against the US.

Ch. Nisar said unnecessary criticism and practice of leveling false allegations on Pakistan?s serious efforts for peace in the region creates hurdles in attaining mutual interests.

He said the achievements in the war on terror reflect Pakistan?s sincere efforts it made for the security of the region.

Ch. Nisar said the US government acknowledges achievements made during ongoing war against terrorism especially Zarb-e-Azb for lasting peace in the region.

The US Ambassador lauded the steps taken by the ministry of interior and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in security and immigration areas.

SC orders ECP members to be appointed till July 28

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the appointment of the members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) by July 28.

Chief Justice SC Anwar Zaheer Jamali heard the case after he took suo moto notice of non-performance of functions by the ECP.

The chief justice remarked during the hearing that the nomination process should have started earlier so that the institution would not have been non-functional.

Upon which the Additional Attorney General told the court that consultation is going on with the opposition over the issue of nomination and after the 22nd Amendment the appointments would be carried out within 45 days.

During the hearing, the CJ inquired why the nomination process had not been completed before June 12.

He said that the main concern was not who was being consulted but the fact that had the process been started earlier, the institution would not have become inactive.

The Chief Justice stated that hopefully the same matter would not be stretched to six years since the inactivity of the ECP was affecting the whole system.

Leader of the opposition in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah had presided a meeting on Wednesday to finalize names of four members for the EC, however, the meeting ended without an agreement.

House Of Cards show-runner Beau Willimon to not return for new season

Beau Willimon and David Fincher, the dream team that launched House of Cards on Netflix with Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright in lead roles, is finally saying goodbye to the show. Though Fincher is still attached as producer, Beau Willimon, the show-runner for the hit Netflix series, will not return for the upcoming fifth season of the show.

His departure from the show is amicable as is obvious from his statement. ?After five years and four seasons, it?s time for me to move on to new endeavors,? Willimon stated. ?But I?m supremely proud of what we?ve built together.?

It does, however, lead one to question where the show will go from here. Netflix has renewed the show but speculation suggests that Kevin Spacey?s Frank Underwood could get killed off as the show paves way for his other, equally terrifying half, Claire Underwood to take over the American presidency. This also ties in with the rumours that a spin-off without Spacey could be underway. The thought was echoed by Michael Dobbs, who wrote the original novels used as source for the series, and is also an executive producer to the show. Addressing the question whether the show can go on with without Spacey, Dobbs noted, ?That is a very interesting question and one that we are putting our minds to actively because every show comes to a natural end.?

Having been around for years, the show is a brand, one that could go on to embrace the ideology of other shows like Breaking Bad and 24 that have returned with a prequel and a re-boot, respectively. ?It is a global brand, so the question arises: what do we do with a global brand??said Dobbs. What this means for Netflix series, only time and the audience will tell.

Death toll in Kashmir climbs to 40 as Indian Army continues violence

OCCUPIED KASHMIR: Death toll in the occupied territory climbed to 40 as Indian army opened fire at protesters.

As the atrocities by Indian forces against the unarmed people of Kashmir continued to its sixth day, tensions rose and the Hurriyat representatives extended the date of their protest strike against the Indian government till July 15.

The Indian Army is firing rubber shells at citizens, an act which has damaged eyes of over a 100 people, hospital sources confirmed.

Most patients are coming with injuries on their chest, neck and stomach, hospital sources added. Many patients need surgery. The injured include children.

Amnesty International has condemned the use of force in Occupied Kashmir.

Businesses, schools and transport remained shut for the general public as a curfew was also imposed by the Indian government in some areas.

The Kashmiris have openly stood up against the Indian government and refused to back down from demanding their rights. On Wednesday, another Kashmiri was martyred in the city of Anantnag.

Meanwhile Hurriyat representatives Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Omar Farooq have been placed under house arrest by the Indian government.

Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Maleeha Lodhi also condemned the atrocities by the Indian army and said that it was usurping the Kashmiris' right of self-determination.

All eyes on Amir as Pakistan return to Lord´s

London: Pakistan is all set to take on England at Lords after six years, as the first test match is scheduled to begin on Thursday afternoon.

Mohammad Amir will hope to put the 2010 spot-fixing scandal behind him once and for all when he returns to the scene of the crime in the first Test against England at Lord´s today.

For all his time out of cricket, the 24-year-old retains the ability to swing the ball late at sharp pace, as he showed with a first-innings haul of three for 36 in Pakistan´s tour opener against Somerset.

Such was the impact of the controversy, the fact teenage sensation Amir took six for 84 in the first innings of that match has largely been forgotten.

Now Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq believes Amir can win back the trust of cricket fans with the sheer quality of his play.

"His mood is good," said Misbah during a pre-match press conference at Lord´s on Wednesday.

"He´s just focusing on what he has to do in the ground," added the veteran batsman, making his first Test tour of England at the advanced age of 42.

"He is really responding well to that and I hope it´s a big opportunity for him, and that he comes on to the field and performs for Pakistan, to win the people again."

Amir is far from the only threat in a Pakistan bowling line-up also featuring fellow left-armer Wahab Riaz and leg-spinner Yasir Shah.

That means an England side missing the injured duo of all-time leading wicket-taker James Anderson and all-rounder Ben Stokes, should not have things all their own way as they did in the preceding 2-0 home series win over Sri Lanka.

England captain Alastair Cook, who played in the infamous 2010 match, has long been an advocate of a ´zero tolerance´ approach to fixing.

However, he has no qualms facing Amir again.

"I´ve said all along I don´t think match fixers should be allowed to play but at that time he was given his punishment," said Cook.

"He´s served it, so he´s absolutely entitled to come back."

´Skilful´

Opening batsman Cook, England´s all-time leading Test run-scorer, added: "One thing not in question with Mohammad Amir is that he is a decent bowler.

"He does not get a wicket every time he bowls a ball, so we have to be careful not to build him up in our own minds -- but we know how skilful he is."

Pakistan have a strong middle order in Misbah, fellow veteran Younis Khan and the in-form Asad Shafiq.

But doubts persist over openers Mohammad Hafeez and Shan Masood, just as there are concerns as to whether Alex Hales, yet to score a Test hundred, is the right man to partner Cook at the top of England´s order.

The combative Riaz is looking to target Joe Root, now promoted to number three by England.
For Root, whose Yorkshire colleague Gary Ballance has been recalled at number five, that was just "trash talk".

But Riaz said of Root: "He is the backbone of the England team and getting him out early will put the pressure on England.
"If he thinks it is just trash talk then hats off to him."

England will give a debut to Nottinghamshire quick Jake Ball in Anderson´s absence and he is set to open the attack with county colleague Stuart Broad.
Anderson bowled in the nets at Lord´s but England have decided not to rush their prize asset back from a shoulder injury.

"Of course, there is always a temptation to take that gamble," said Cook.
But with three more games to come in this series, including the second Test at Lancashire legend Anderson´s Old Trafford home ground a week on Friday, caution won out.

"The selectors have decided it´s too much of a risk to go for it," Cook explained.

Pakistan calls for plebiscite in strife-torn, Indian-held Kashmir as it raises issue at UN

UNITED NATIONS: With the situation in Indian occupied Kashmir sharply deteriorating, Pakistan raised the issue in the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday making a call for allowing the oppressed Kashmiri people their UN pledged right to self determination to establish peace and security in South Asia.

The denial of self determination to the people of Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir has resulted in some of the most atrocious human rights violations including rape, torture, arbitrary detentions, and summary executions, Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi said in a High Level Thematic Debate of the 193-member Assembly on human rights at the centre of the global agenda.

It's most chilling recent example is the extra judicial killing last week of a Kashmiri leader Burhan Wani shot to death by Indian forces along with dozens of other innocent Kashmiris, the Pakistani envoy told delegates from around the world.

Wani's death on Friday sparked off huge protest demonstration across Jammu and Kashmir.

Government forces fired live rounds and tear gas killing 37 people. The Huriyat leaders extended the call for strike till Friday.

The violence in Indian occupied Kashmir is the worst seen in the state for years.

More than 250 other people have been injured in the clashes.

The occupation forces in Indian held Kashmir are resorting to these brutal acts to suppress the right to self determination of the Kashmiri people promised to them by several UN Security Council resolutions, Ambassador Lodhi said.

Despite Indian suppression, she said the Kashmiri people were determined to continue their struggle for freedom from foreign occupation.

Sixty eight years after the UN Security Council first called for a UN conducted plebiscite to allow the Kashmiri people to exercise their right to self determination the fulfillment of this pledge remains the only way to resolve this long standing dispute and establish durable peace and security in South Asia, Lodhi told the General Assembly.

Qandeel Baloch claims she suffered an abusive marriage

Internet sensation Qandeel Baloch accepted on Wednesday that she had married previously and had a child from that marriage.

Her husband Ashiq Hussain came on live television earlier this week claiming that the model had married him in 2008 and they had had a child together.

He also said that Qandeel?s real name was Fowzia Azeem.

Speaking to Geo News Qandeel accepted her marriage to Ashiq Hussain. ?I was in an abusive marriage with him for a year and a half. My parents had married me to him against my wishes. He used to beat me up,? she said.

She added that she does not visit her son.

Earlier, a man from Peshawar claimed to be Qandeel?s first husband. In a statement to the media Shahid Baloch demanded that Qandeel remove his surname from her name. ?She is giving Baloch people a bad name,? he said.

Qandeel was recently in the news for her selfies with Mufti Qavi, who was suspended from the moon-sighting Ruet-e-Hilal Committee after their pictures went viral.

Qandeel has often expressed her desire to marry Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chief Imran Khan. In one of videos on social media she says, ?Marry me Imran Khan, please.?

Was the media right to report on Imran Khan?s third marriage?

Imran Khan has lived with controversiesâ€"much before he entered politics in the late 90s. As a politician controversies followed him again, controversies which had more to do with his private than public life.

At times he enjoyed controversy. But in this particular case about his third marriage he was not only disturbed but disappointed too with the media, because the news came when he was with his two sons in London. The question is: how one should discuss a celebrity’s private life?

Who knows better about Imran Khan than his first wife Jemima Goldsmith who had even embraced Islam out of love for him. Their two sons have grown up and still have confidence in their father despite one controversy after another.

A wedding photo of Imran Khan and Jemima Khan
A wedding photo of Imran Khan and Jemima Khan
For Imran Khan controversies linked to his private life are nothing new. He grew up with the reputation of the world’s most glamorous cricketer. And his love affairs with celebrities around the world were regular news items.

At the same time, he also became a famous philanthropist by building the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Caner Hospital. His charismatic personality reached a new height when Pakistan won the World Cup in 1992. Even his victory speech generated controversy when for one reason or the other he ignored mentioning his teammates. Later, he himself regretted it.

Over the years, it became part of his personality. During his cricket days, he was described as the most “glamorous bachelor”. His first marriage to charismatic Jamima Goldsmith was termed “wedding of the year”.

He himself married TV anchor Reham Khan that became a matter of public debate and also let public know about his divorce. Thus, when about a week back, he hinted at getting married again, it hit the “headlines”.

But, where the media went wrong were speculations without verification and no attribution. In such stories where someone’s privacy could be affected, it’s most important to have authentic and multiple sources, even if there is no direct attribution. The media also needs to give people the right to reply.

So, the first question is whether Imran Khan himself wanted the world to know about his plan or intention to get married again. If not, he should have avoided questions about his private life.

In Reham’s case, he made the announcement during a protest “dharna”. The timing of his second marriage became a matter of controversy against the backdrop of the APS incident. Similarly, Imran and his spokesman Naeemul Haq surprised many when they made the divorce to Reham public, followed by Reham’s disclosure.

There are many stories about politicians’ private life that the media avoids reporting despite having authentic knowledge, including secret weddings. The private of all politician’s is not of public interest. Imran Khan is different.

Yes, ethics do matter in reporting or discussing the private life of a public servant and there are certain ethical guidelines as well in such reporting. Since we do not have a strong defamation law, the media often does such reporting.

Last year, a woman created quite a stir when she tried to portray herself as someone close to former president Asif Ali Zardari. Several television channels interviewed her and she become a star overnight and then disappeared.

All kinds of stories were also circulated about model Ayyan Ali and her alleged relations with some politicians. The media all over the world follows leaders’ private life, particularly if he is someone like glamorous Imran Khan.

The West has different standards and people are very strict about the character of their public representatives. A scandal related to a love affair, a politician found drunk in public, or a story about tax evasion my ruin the political career of a leader. Here, the situation is somewhat different.

It has often been argued that politicians’ private life is important because he or she call themselves public servants and are supposed to lead from the front. But, at times, the media crossed certain “red lines” that could even be fatal as happened in the case of Lady Diana when the media was blamed for her death in a road accident.

In the latest Imran Khan controversy, there was hardly any attribution or confirmation from multiple sources that he is getting married to a particular woman. Therefore, after a contradiction from Imran Khan and his family as well as the family whose daughter had been named, the media should have regretted unless any journalist had any evidence to prove his story like Mr Arif Nizami who upheld his news about Reham Khan and proved the PTI and Imran Khan wrong.

So, if a journalist or the media is cheerful while giving any “exclusive”, it is equally important that it should also regret if their story bounces back. Unfortunately, we do not have any culture of regret or apology in the electronic media.

Now, why is it important for people to know about the private and public life of their representatives? It is in the interest of people to know whether their representatives are honest, pay income tax regularly, take special privileges and keep high moral standards.

However, the media has to be very careful while reporting weddings and deaths particularly if it is about well-known celebrities or public representatives. In both cases, some attribution or multiple sources could make the story more authentic. One cannot misreport about someone’s death without confirmation as it could cause trauma for the family as happened in the case of a lady MPA of the Punjab Assembly few months back. A section of the media reported that she had died in the ICU, but she survived.

There are two clear opinions over reporting the private life of a public figure: (1) breach of privacy of a celebrity’s life, and (2) politicians are public servants and people have the right to know about the conduct of public figures, particularly those who are supposed to lead the nation.

A wedding photo of Imran Khan and Reham Khan
A wedding photo of Imran Khan and Reham Khan
Imran Khan has never hidden his past, present and even the future unlike others. The fresh controversy about him arose after his interview. Since the case of Reham Khan, from IK to PTI leaders had all denied the news and even launched a campaign against Arif Nizami, before he got married to her and confirmed the news. The media speculations continued despite categorical denials.

But the media guidelines are simple in such cases. Avoid speculations about the wedding or death of a person as it could put you in an embarrassing position. Even in the case of Imran Khan’s sister Uzma Khan vs Maryam Nawaz, the media should have taken the version of the other party after the accusation. Instead, they even misreported about Faryal Talpur’s protocol in the same story. It took almost several hours before Uzma herself said sorry to Maryam. The media should have also regretted.

In journalism, it is often said, “If in doubt, cut it out.” But if you have an authentic story, a journalist must fight it out and defend his or her position. Here, the controversy triggered after Imran Khan’s disclosure, but the rest remained mere speculations and that too without any verification and attribution.
