COAS vows to leave no stone unturned to nab culprits of Karachi terror attacks

RAWALPINDI/KARACHI: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif on Sunday visited the headquarters of the Pakistan Rangers (Sindh) in Karachi where he was briefed about the ongoing operations, the prevailing security situation and the way forward for the Karachi operation.

According to an ISPR press release, the Army chief commended the sacrifices and achievements of the Rangers in Sindh which have so far brought about significant improvement in the law and order situation in Karachi.

Speaking to the troops, Gen Raheel Sharif said that the determination, courage and resolve of the Sindh Rangers to rid the city of terrorists and criminals had earned them the widest respect from the people of Karachi.

He reiterated that the across-the-board operation focuses on the entire network of terrorists, their abettors and financiers and that it would continue until the objective of peace and to restore normalcy in all parts of Karachi is achieved.

"Every assistance, including intelligence and material combat support, will be provided to the Rangers to accomplish their mission,? he said.

Referring to recent incidents in the city, the Pakistan Army chief directed all commanders, including those of intelligence agencies, to continue working hand in glove and to leave no stone unturned in finding the perpetrators.

Zardari dismayed by Rs300mn KP govt grant to Darul Uloom Haqqania

ISLAMABAD: Former president and PPP co-chairman of Asif Ali Zardari has expressed concern and dismay over the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government's allocation of Rs 300 million to Darul Uloom Haqqania, a privately-owned seminary in Akora Khattak known for its alleged links with Taliban militants.

"This is nothing but legitimization of militancy and militant Taliban that will undermine the nation's resolve to fight militants to the finish," the PPP co-chairman said in a statement released here on Sunday.

Spokesperson Senator Farhatullah Babar said that the former president was deeply concerned over the use of public funds for "legitimising a private seminary known for promoting private jehad project".

"The resources should have been spent on human development instead of on a seminary whose claim to fame lies in its promotion of militant Islam and the world view of Islamic militants.

"That it should have happened around the time when a group of the militant Taliban reportedly claimed responsibility for the target-killing of Sabri Qawwal in Karachi makes it all the more poignant," Asif Zardari said in the statement.

He said that the head of the Darul Uloom Haqqania in Nowshera is an acknowledged sympathiser and undeclared spokesperson of the Taliban.

"During the government-TTP talks in 2014, the Taliban actually named the head of the seminary to negotiate on their behalf. It is also widely known that a number of militant Taliban leaders have been students of this seminary," he added.

Last week, a story published in The News had revealed that the Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf led KP government had made a drastic cut in the funds for minorities and allocated a whopping Rs300 million for the seminary in the provincial budget.

Provincial Information Minister Mushtaq Ghani had told The News that the funds were allotted on the request of the Darul Uloom Haqqania.

However, the KP government spokesman clarified that move was aimed at mainstreaming religious seminaries as around three million students are enrolled there where they are fed, sheltered and taken care of free of cost.

He said the provincial administration wanted to enhance monitoring and oversight of the religious seminaries which is not possible without catering for their needs and bridging disconnects.

According to media reports, four terrorists involved in carrying out the murder of Asif Zardari's slain wife, former PPP chairman Benazir Bhutto.

The Darul Uloom Haqqania denies the allegations and any accusations that any of its students were involved in the assassination. A spokesman for the seminary has said that those having vested interests were maligning the religious institution as part of a propaganda campaign by anti-Islam lobbies to defame the famed religious institution.

West Indies T20 league eyes India bounce

PORT OF SPAIN: West Indies cricket's increasing fixation with the T20 format comes clearly into focus over the next six weeks with the fourth edition of the Caribbean Premier League getting underway on Wednesday.

Defending champions Trinidad and Tobago face St Lucia at the Queen's Park Oval in the opener.

That the franchise previously known as the Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel now carries the branding of Trinbago Knight Riders reflects the increasing international appeal of the tournament, and more specifically, the growing attraction to the immensely lucrative Indian market.

With Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, owner of the Indian Premier League two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders, now the controlling stakeholder of the Port-of-Spain-based franchise, even the timing of the four home matches (9pm local time) to catch the morning television audience in India reflects the outward-looking perspective of the competition organisers that has often been at odds with the preferences of West Indian audiences.

While most matches in the three-week inaugural season of the CPL in 2013 started at 8pm and attracted capacity crowds for almost all fixtures, since then there has been an increasing move towards midday and afternoon matches that are seen to be more attractive to television audiences in larger cricket-watching markets internationally.

Last year's international television audience totalled 90 million and the CPL 2016 goes a step further with the staging of six preliminary matches ? more than at any other venue ? in the United States at the internationally-approved Central Broward Regional Stadium in Lauderhill, Florida.

West Indies, New Zealand and Sri Lanka have played T20 Internationals previously there but this is the first time that the CPL is venturing to America.

The format of the game is seen as ideal to capture the interest and patronage of the expatriate West Indians and Indian sub-continentals who have often complained of being starved of opportunities to see their cricketing heroes first-hand.

Another first this year, and one that is likely to have a detrimental impact on the traditional game, is the clashing of the CPL schedule with the West Indies home test series.

Four Tests are to be played against India in July and August with the first two in Antigua and Jamaica likely to feel the impact of cricket fans being drawn to their television sets at home rather than to the venues as CPL matches are played in St Lucia and Florida simultaneously.

Home Test cricket audiences have dwindled significantly over the past decade as the West Indies fortunes continued on a downward trend.

Test struggles

Many fans in the region now prioritise the CPL ahead of the representative Caribbean team, a reality that is likely to be even more evident over the next two months.

While players' salaries pale by comparison to what is available in the IPL, the combination of the joyful, tourist-oriented Caribbean setting and contracts that reach an upper limit in the region of $150,000 continues to attract more of the best available international talent.

However, that excludes the notable exception of Indian players who have never featured in any competition outside of their multi-million-dollar domestic event.

Three years ago, the top-ranked international players in the inaugural CPL were Australia's Ricky Ponting, Muttiah Muralitharan of Sri Lanka, the Pakistani pair of Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez, New Zealander Ross Taylor and South African Herschelle Gibbs.

In 2016 though, the increasing prestige and appeal of the tournament has attracted a host of international talent with A.B. de Villiers, arguably the most complete batsman in world cricket, and fellow South Africans Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis featuring for the first time.

Also a first-timer at the CPL is recently-retired New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum.

Eight years ago he savaged the Royal Challenges Bangalore attack on the way to 158 for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the very first match of the inaugural IPL season.

On Wednesday, he will at least attempt to have a similar impact making his debut for the Trinbago Knight Riders as they take on a St Lucia Zouks team led by Darren Sammy, the man who captained the West Indies to their second World T20 title earlier this year.

2.2mn seminary students also have rights: Imran Khan

PESHAWAR: PTI chief Imran Khan said on Sunday that the 2.2 million children enrolled and studying in Pakistan's madrassa system also have rights for which the government holds responsibility to ensure.

The process of taking corrective actions has begun with Darul Uloom Haqqania, said the cricketer-turned-politician while addressing a press conference in Peshawar.

The PTI chief also said during his press conference that the KP government was undertaking administrative corrections in hospitals. He also disclosed that the budget for health sector has been increased from eight billion rupees to twenty-five billion rupees.

Imran also appealed to the high court to end its stay order with regard to the health department.

He said that bringing seminaries into the mainstream was part of the National Action Plan.

"Those madrassas which had refused to accept corrective actions during the Musharraf era are now on-board with the recommendations provided by the PTI-led government," he said.

Imran Khan and PTI have been slammed by critics during the past week after the PTI-led KP government approved a grant of Rs 300 million for Darul Uloom Haqqania, a seminary allegedly said to have links with Taliban militants.

PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday criticized the measure by the KP government, calling the move "legitimization of militancy and militant Taliban that will undermine the nation's resolve to fight militants to the finish."

Brexit a sign of anti-elite revolt: analysts

PARIS: It was Britain's poorer and less-educated citizens ? angry at not having shared in the economic benefits of a new world order ? who pushed it out of the European Union, in a vote that threatens elites, analysts say.

They are those who suffered the worst hangover from the economic crisis, and whose precarious economic position makes them most fearful of rising immigration -- to the benefit of far right groups in the EU and Donald Trump in the United States.

"I see the same pattern everywhere I look," said William Galston, a senior fellow at the US-based Brookings Institution.

"The demographic splits within the UK are exactly the same category for category as the demographic splits within the American electorate in this presidential election."

Rural areas with high numbers of migrant workers, former industrial hubs and poor areas around cities, those without a university education and older voters were all among the 51.9 percent who voted Brexit.

Galston said this was the same demographic backing controversial Republican candidate Trump in the US, as well as eurosceptic and far-right parties enjoying a rise in support across Europe.

"They mistrust political elites because up until now they haven´t seen any political parties who appear to recognise their discontent and respond to it."

Galston said while he did not expect these forces to prevail in the United States as they did in the Brexit vote, they were a "major warning signal to established parties throughout Europe".

Fears are high of a domino effect, with eurosceptic, leftist and far right parties from France to the Netherlands crying victory after the shock Brexit result was announced and calling for similar votes in their own countries.

Political scientist Melanie Sully of the Vienna-based Go-Governance Institute warned Europe was facing a "crisis of democracy" that could be exploited by xenophobic, far right parties.

"If you don´t have any trust in politics, it´s exactly the sort of black hole populists can march into and capture the mood and build on it, to perpetuate their own falsehoods," she told AFP.

At the root of this surge in anti-establishment sentiment is a feeling of fear, loss of control, and traditions and identity lost among those who are struggling economically, analysts say.

"Before we talk about populism, the anti-establishment, we have to talk about the social position of these people. What do they earn? How do they see their everyday lives?" said Tetiana Havlin, a sociologist at the University of Siegen in Germany.

"In everyday life nobody thinks about anti-globalisation, anti-establishment. They just see their challenges", she said.

"This of course gives fertile ground for populism... but in the end this is about what people feel."

Observers point to two main drivers of the surge in scorn for the elite: the hangover from the 2008/2009 economic crisis and the refugee crisis.

"You have a lot of people who took a big hit. These are people who feel economically vulnerable, and when you put demographic fears on top of economic vulnerability this is what you get," said Halston.

"I don´t think its mysterious anymore, we may have been scratching our head a year ago but we should be in no doubt now."

Many young people who voted Remain are furious at the number of older British voters who backed Leave -- lumbering them, as they see it, with the consequences of their decision for decades to come.

Havlin said that many of these voters saw the EU as a source of security and stability when Britain joined in 1973, a time she refers to as "the prosperity years".

Now older, these voters reeling from austerity and a sense of growing threats at Europe´s borders, feel "threatened and insecure".

Dominique Moisi, of the French Institute of International Relations (IFRI) said the Brexit earthquake was a dark moment in Europe´s history, comparing it unfavourably to the fall of communism.

"Remember Star Wars: there is the light side and the dark side of the force. The light side was the fall of the Berlin Wall. The dark side is Brexit."

High-level security huddle in Karachi after fresh wave of violence

KARACHI: Pakistan's top civilian and military leaders gathered here for high-level security meetings on Sunday after recent high-profile terrorist attacks in Karachi raised fears of a slide back into chaos in the busy metropolis.

A top-level security meeting was held at the Corps Headquarters in Karachi attended by Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif, Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, DG ISI Gen Rizwan Akhtar, other senior officials.

Earlier today, the Army chief visited the headquarters of the Pakistan Rangers (Sindh) in Karachi where he was briefed about the ongoing operations, the prevailing security situation and the way forward for the Karachi operation.

General Raheel Sharif ordered commanders to leave "no stone unturned" in finding the attackers who killed eminent Qawwal Amjad Sabri and gunmen who kidnapped Owais Ali Shah, the son of the provincial chief justice.

The killing of Amjad Sabri, one of the most popular singers of Qawwali, was the latest in a high-profile series of attacks in Karachi, a megacity of 20 million plagued by political, ethnic and sectarian violence.

Two days earlier, unknown gunmen had kidnapped Owais Ali Shah, the son of Sindh High Court Chief Justice Sajjad Ali Shah, in an upscale shopping area.

Improved security in Karachi has been one of the showcase successes for the army's ongoing security crackdown.

Karachi's murder rate fell by 50 percent after the paramilitary Rangers, who answer to the Ministry of Interior and the army, launched a sweeping crackdown in 2014 against suspected militants and criminals.

'Leave no stone unturned'

During his visit to the Rangers headquarters, the Army chief commended the sacrifices and achievements of the Rangers in Sindh which have so far brought about significant improvement in the law and order situation in Karachi.

According to an ISPR press release, Gen Raheel Sharif said that the determination, courage and resolve of the Sindh Rangers to rid the city of terrorists and criminals had earned them the widest respect from the people of Karachi.

Referring to recent incidents in the city, the Pakistan Army chief directed all commanders, including those of intelligence agencies, to continue working hand in glove and to "leave no stone unturned in finding the perpetrators".

'Operation to continue until elimination of last terrorist'

In a separate meeting earlier today, Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Ebad agreed that the ongoing operation in Karachi would continue until the complete elimination terrorists from the city.

The two leaders visited the residence of Sindh High Court's Chief Justice Sajjad Ali Shah to speak about his kidnapped son.

The interior minister said that law enforcement agencies would do everything to recover barrister Owais Ali Shah from his kidnappers.

The interior minister apprised the Chief Justice of the headway so far made towards the efforts for the recovery of his son Awais Ali Khan. He hoped that the son of the SHC Chief Justice would be recovered soon.

Chaudhry Nisar along with Dr Ishrat ul Ebad Khan also visited the residence of slain Qawwal Amjad Sabri and offered condolences to the members of the bereaved family. The two leaders also offered Fateha for the departed soul.

Bangladesh gets $150 million from World Bank for health

The World Bank said on Sunday it has approved $150 million in additional financing to help improve Bangladesh's health systems and services, bringing its total support for health projects in the country to $508.9 million.

The support will help the government address health sector challenges, including sustaining and improving immunization coverage, improving deliveries for pregnant women at public health facilities and tackling multi-drug resistant tuberculosis, the World Bank said in a statement.

Bangladesh has reduced under-five child mortality by 29 percent between 2007 and 2014, and during the same period, births attended by medically trained professionals increased from 21 percent to 42 percent.

The financing will also help Bangladesh improve public financial management to get more value from its public spending on health and support development of a health information system, including a web-based complaint-handling mechanism.

The credit from the World Bank's International Development Association has a 38-year term, including a six-year grace period and a service charge of 0.75 percent.

Firefighters bring under control fourth blaze incident in Karachi

KARACHI: A huge fire that erupted early on Sunday in a multi-storey building was brought under control after a three-hour long struggle in Clifton, fire brigade officials said.

A man was taken out in a dead state from the eighth floor of the commercial building in Clifton Block 4. According to the fire brigade officials, the victim was a security guard and died due to suffocation.

The officials also said that 12 people stuck in the building were evacuated with the help of a snorkel.

Eight people stuck on the rooftop were also taken out of the building in the rescue operation.

The incident underscored lack of resources the Fire Brigade Department has been facing as the snorkel had no access beyond sixth floor and three people stranded at the eighth floor had to reach the snorkel using ropes.

According to Chief Fire officer Tehseen Ahmed, the fire was extinguished with the help of five fire tenders and one snorkel.

It was reported that the fire was caused to an explosion by an AC compressor and intensified over time.

Sindh Minister for Local Government Jam Khan Shoro also reached the site to overview the rescue activities. While speaking to media he said that the fire department requires a helicopter, adding that after the Cabinet?s approval a helicopter will be bought.

?This is alarming that Karachi Fire department has only one snorkel, which also can?t go beyond six floors while the city has several multi-storey buildings,? he said.

The metropolitan has witnessed a series of blazes within just a few days. On Friday, three fire incidents occurred at different places within a single day in Karachi. Firefighters had successfully brought under control two fires at a medicine manufacturing factory in Hawkesbay and a garment factory in the SITE area. However, a warehouse storing tires in Gulbani area involved recurrent fires but the situation was eventually brought under control after a struggle of more than 24 hours by the firefighters.

Bus fire kills 30 in central China: Xinhua

BEIJING: At least 30 people were killed when a large bus burst into flames after crashing into the side of a road in central China on Sunday, state media said.

A total of 56 people were on board the bus which crashed in Hunan province, the official Xinhua news agency reported, suggesting casualties could rise.

21 injured passengers have been sent to hospitals, Xinhua said, adding that the driver of the bus had been detained.

Video posted online by state broadcaster CCTV showed thick black smoke billowing from the vehicle, as passengers appeared to stand nearby.
Local officials believe that an oil leak caused by the bus crashing into a roadside guard rail may have caused the fire, Xinhua said.

The cause of the crash remained unclear.
Traffic accidents are common in China, with more than 250,000 people dying each year on the country´s roads, according to the World Health Organization.

Long-distance buses are popular in China as a cheap way of travelling between cities and competition between bus firms can be fierce.

China has seen repeated bus fires in recent years which have caused multiple fatalities.
At least 38 people were killed in 2014 when a van carrying inflammable liquid hit a bus on a highway in Hunan province, state media reported.

In 2010 a shuttle bus carrying steel factory workers in eastern China burst into flames, killing 24 passengers.

Several such incidents were deliberate arson attacks, according to officials.
An arsonist who injured more than 30 people by setting fire to a bus in the Chinese city of Hangzhou was executed last year, authorities said.

In 2013 a suicidal man started a fire on a vehicle in Xiamen in the eastern province of Fujian that killed 47 people, including himself.

There were no indications that the fire on Sunday was deliberate. Xinhua said rescuers were searching the charred frame of the bus.

England leg-spinner Rashid grateful for Aussie greats? backing

BIRMINGHAM: England leg-spinner Adil Rashid has expressed his thanks for the backing of Australia greats Jason Gillespie and Shane Warne but insisted it is down to him to secure his place in international cricket.

Rashid, 28, has long been regarded as the most promising England slow bowler of his generation. He had received plenty of support from Warne, perhaps the greatest leg-break bowler cricket has known.

The retired spinner´s former Test team-mate Gillespie is Rashid´s coach at English county champions Yorkshire.

Rashid has featured in all of England´s last 22 one-ay internationals, a run stretching back to May 2015 which saw him recalled after six years out of national service.

The first two matches of England´s ongoing five-game series with Sri Lanka have seen Rashid return impressive combined figures of two for 70 in his maximum 20 overs. His two wickets at Edgbaston on Friday helped pave the way for a 10-wicket win that saw England go 1-0 up in the five-match series following Tuesday´s tie at Trent Bridge.

Rashid is also keen to add to his three Tests caps, with former Australia fast bowler Gillespie believing he could relace Moeen Ali as England´s specialist slow bowler in five-day cricket.

"It can be good (having someone like that rate you)," said Rashid ahead of Sunday´s third ODI in Bristol, southwest England. But you can get a lot of people rating you. It is up to the individual to not let that get to his head and keep concentrating on what is in front of him."

Gillespie, who also signed Rashid for Adelaide Strikers in Australian domestic cricket´s Twenty20 Big Bash tournament, said before the start of the current English season that good man-management was the key to getting the best out of the leg-spinner.

"Jason is a high-quality coach, who has played for Australia -- so he has got a lot of experience," said Rashid. "The way he talks to me helps, so it is good to have him there as well."

Turning to Warne, who had a lengthy practice session with Rashid prior to the third Test against Pakistan in Sharjah in November and spoke to him again before the first ODI against Sri Lanka at Trent Bridge, the Yorkshireman added: "It was just before the (first ODI) at Notts - I had a general chat with him about leg-spin.

"He gives his tips ... which are helpful."

Rashid, reflecting on his past year with England, said: "It has been a good 12 months for me, especially with the white ball.

"Every series that has gone by, I have looked to improve and gain experience as well and got more confident. It´s probably the most consistent (I´ve been), in the last two games. I am getting better mentally, and with my skills, but you can always have a bad day or a bad game or series - so it is being strong in the mind."

As for his Test hopes, Rashid added: "They are quite strong, but I think that is quite a long way away. "At the moment I am just trying to concentrate on the ODIs and the Twenty20s that are in front of me -- and hope that will take care of itself further down the line.

"I don´t think of replacing Mo or anything like that."

Quaresma heads Portugal into Euro 2016 quarters

LENS: Ricardo Quaresma headed Cristiano Ronaldo´s Portugal into the quarter-finals of Euro 2016 three minutes before the end of extra-time to break Croatian hearts with the only goal in Lens.

Ronaldo was denied matching Michel Platini´s record of nine goals in European championship finals by a fine save from Danijel Subasic, but the ball fell kindly to Quaresma to head into an empty net. He sprinted to the corner flag where he was mobbed by his teammates.

Portugal will face Poland in the quarter-finals in Marseille on Thursday after the Poles beat Switzerland 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw earlier on Saturday.

Ronaldo had been kept extremely quiet for the vast majority of the game as the dull encounter became the first match in European championship history where neither team managed a shot on target during the regulation 90 minutes.

Portugal were the only side to progress to the last 16 despite not winning any of their three group games and coach Fernando Santos took an extremely cautious approach.

Ronaldo did not even touch the ball in the Croatia box during the first-half, but Portugal were doing enough to limit a Croatia side that had thrilled in beating defending champions Spain 2-1 in midweek to precious few chances.

Little sparkle

Star midfielder Luka Modric returned from injury for a matchup with his Real Madrid teammate Ronaldo, but both he and Barcelona´s Ivan Rakitic struggled to sparkle as they had earlier in the tournament.

It was another Real Madrid player who had the best chance of the first-half when Pepe nodded Raphael Guerreiro´s dangerous free-kick over.

Ivan Perisic was Croatia´s hero with the winning goal against Spain, but he pulled their best chance of the opening 45 minutes into the side-netting from a narrow angle.

Croatia upped the pace at the start of the second period having enjoyed a day´s more rest than Portugal and Marcelo Brozovic should have done better when he blazed over from a quickly taken corner.

Santos looked to inject some life into the Portugal midfield by introducing wonderkid Renato Sanches and the 18-year-old, who Bayern Munich paid Benfica 35 million euros ($39 million) for last month, nearly made an instant impact.

After a lovely series of one-twos with Nani, Sanches took aim from the edge of the area only to drag his weak shot wide.

Domagoj Vida headed a great chance wide for Croatia from Rakitic´s fine cross as the game began to come to life in the final quarter.

Nani then had strong claims for a penalty waived away by Spanish referee Carlos Velasco Carballo when he appeared to be kicked in the chest by Ivan Strinic as he burst into the box.

However, unlike so often at Euro 2016, there was no late drama as both sides settled for the stalemate to take the game into extra-time.

Croatian boss Ante Cacic replaced ineffectual Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic with Nikola Kalinic, but the Fiorentina forward fired the only chance of the opening period of extra time wildly wide.

Vida had another golden chance when he headed wide with the Portuguese goal gaping after Rui Patricio failed to collect Brozovic´s corner seven minutes from time. However, Patricio made himself a hero seconds later when he turned Ivan Perisic´s header onto the post.

And Portugal then snatched their first victory of the tournament at the death as Subasic´s reflex save to keep out Ronaldo went unrewarded as Quaresma jubilantly nodded the ball in to the gaping net.

Bid to link Darul Uloom Haqqania with Benazir?s murder rebuffed

NOWSHERA: Rubbishing the reports about the involvement of students of the Darul Uloom Haqqania in the assassination of late prime minister Benazir Bhutto, a spokesman for the seminary on Saturday said those having vested interests were maligning the religious institution. He said the allegations were part of the propaganda campaign by anti-Islam lobbies to defame the famed Darul Uloom Haqqania.

He said involving it in the assassination of a great politician and an internationally known leader and intellectual like Benazir Bhutto was a conspiracy to save the real elements behind the murder.

He noted that Benazir Bhutto was never threatened religious scholars and seminaries but was a threat to the powers that be. ?She was assassinated by those who considered her a threat to their power, political future and other interests,? the spokesman stressed.

He said there was contradiction in the reports prepared by the then interior minister, who declared before any investigation could be done that the plan to assassinate Benazir Bhutto was prepared and funded in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata).

He reminded that it was reported at the time that General ® Pervez Musharraf, Brigadier (R) Ijaz Shah, al-Qaeda, Taliban and two rival parties of Pakistan People?s Party (PPP) were involved in the murder.

He said investigation into the high profile murder case was carried out by the Scotland Yard and United Nations but none mentioned or blamed Darul Uloom Haqqania for any role in the murder.

The spokesman said Benazir Bhutto had named certain people to be held accountable if she was harmed and wondered why those persons were not investigated.

He said most PPP activists wanted some of the party leaders accompanying Benazir Bhutto to the Liaqat Bagh public meeting to be investigated in the case.

He said Asif Ali Zardari had time and again said that there were powerful elements behind the militants accused of assassinating Benazir Bhutto.

The Darul Uloom Haqqania spokesman recalled that Asif Ali Zardari in his speech at Benazir Bhutto?s death anniversary on December 27, 2008 in Naudero claimed that former US secretary of state Condoleeza Rice in her book had hinted at some facts about the assassination. This could mean a US role also in the assassination, the spokesman added.

He said the two accused arrested in Benazir Bhutto murder case were blamed to be students of Darul Uloom Haqqania and killed in fake encounters. ?There is no record at the seminary of Aitezaz, Hasnain and Rafaqat who were named as the accused,? he added.

Claiming that there is no evidence of the involvement of Darul Uloom Haqqania in acts of terrorism, the spokesman said delegations from various Western countries including the US and foreign journalists have visited it regularly and have yet to find any terrorist connection yet.

Criticising the Federal Minister for Information Pervaiz Rashid for his tirade against Darul Uloom Haqqania, its spokesman said it was the responsibility of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz government to properly investigate the case instead of playing blame game.

Terming the minister?s statements irresponsible, non-serious and baseless, the spokesman said he would be sued in the court if he continued to make allegations against the seminary without presenting any evidence.

At least 150 homes destroyed in deadly California fire

Los Angeles: Firefighters on Saturday battled a deadly California blaze that has killed two people and destroyed at least 150 homes after rapidly taking over large swaths of land.

The blaze, which has been dubbed the "Erskine Fire," has spread to more than 56 square miles (145 square kilometers) over the course of several days.

Hot temperatures, bone-dry conditions that make brush and grass flammable, and high winds of up to 40 miles per hour (64 kilometers per hour) helped spread the fast-moving blaze that erupted late Thursday afternoon in the Lake Isabella area of Kern County.

The National Weather Service predicted the thermostat would reach 99 degrees Fahrenheit (37 degrees Celsius) on Sunday.

Thousands of residents have been evacuated and the American Red Cross of Kern County has opened two shelters for residents affected by the fire.

Around 1,140 firefighters have been deployed to battle the blaze.
State authorities said firefighters´ task was to "prepare and protect threatened structures," as well as "construct and improve containment lines."

"There is significant potential for fire spread on the eastern flank when wind and slope are in alignment," a state emergency management website said.

"The southern portion of the fire is very steep and rugged, making reconnaissance and fire suppression extremely difficult."

California Governor Jerry Brown has issued a state of emergency for the region, allowing aid to be deployed more quickly.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and is still unknown.

Authorities have closed several highways and evacuated two schools and a retirement home in the agricultural and oil region.

California is experiencing a record five-year drought and trees and brush are at risk of igniting from the smallest spark.
More than 14 large fires are currently raging in the United States, mostly in the southwest, where a record heat wave left at least five dead last Sunday.

'Bajirao Mastani' sweeps ´Bollywood Oscars´

MADRID:Indian historical epic "Bajirao Mastani" swept the "Bollywood Oscars" early Sunday, taking home awards for best director, best supporting actress and best male actor for leading man Ranveer Singh.

The movie, which sees Singh play an 18th century Maratha warrior, picked up nine other technical awards at the International Indian Film Academy awards, including for choreography and best cinematography.

"I am quite overwhelmed by all of this," the movie´s director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, said as he picked up his prize at the International Film Academy awards being held this year in Spain for the first time.

"I don´t want to thank anyone for this film. I think thank you is just not enough for this film," he added to applause from the 5,000-strong crowd gathered at Madrid´s IFEMA congress centre for the event.

"Bajirao Mastani" made around 3.5 billion rupees ($52 million) according to industry estimates, and it has already picked up a number of Indian film awards this year.

Singh in turn said he learned "how to be singleminded and uncompromising in the pursuit of excellence" by working with Bhansali on the film.

"I hope we will continue to make magic together," the 30-year-old actor, who impressed audiences in his 2010 debut as a street-smart Delhi wedding planner in the romantic comedy "Band Baaja Baaraat".

The best picture award went to "Bajrangi Bhaijaan" staring Salman Khan, whose character embarks on a journey to reunite a mute six-year-old Pakistani girl stuck in India with her parents in Pakistan.

The movie was the biggest-grossing Bollywood film of 2015, earning around 6.26 billion rupees.

Sridevi Kapoor, considered by many to be the first female superstar of Hindi cinema, was honoured with a lifetime achievement award.

The award show, which celebrates the Hindi language film industry known as Bollywood, takes place in a different city outside of India every year in the hope of luring new audiences to the genre.

Donkeys and footballers

The co-hosts of the show, Bollywood stars Farhan Akhtar and Shahid Kapoor, arrived on the stage for the start of ceremony -- which got underway two hours behind schedule -- riding donkeys.

They were followed by young men wearing football jerseys who did tricks with a ball with their heads and a mariachi band in white suits.

In the opening ceremony Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan, accompanied by dozens of dancers, performed the flamenco-themed song "Senorita" from his 2011 film "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara", a road movie shot largely in Spain.

Spanish tourism promotion agency Turespana worked closely on the production of the film and it was one of the sponsors of the awards ceremony, which is expected to bring 15,000 extra visitors to Madrid.

Spain is seeking to diversify its tourism base beyond the traditional northern European sunseekers that account for the bulk of its visitors and officials hope hosting the awards will draw more Indian visitors.

Madrid city hall was illuminated with the colours of the Indian flag over the weekend in honour of the awards.

"Dear friends it is so nice to have you here. I am really, really pleased and at the same time very proud of your choice," Madrid mayor Manuela Carmena said at the start of the awards ceremony.

The broadcast of the awards attracts approximately 800 million viewers worldwide.

Launched in 2000 at the Millennium Dome in London, other cities to have hosted the glitzy event include Dubai, Bangkok, Singapore and Toronto. It was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last year.

Russia secures energy deals, talks security with China as Putin visits

BEIJING: Russia and China sealed a raft of energy deals during President Vladimir Putin's visit to Beijing on Saturday, strengthening economic ties while pledging to preserve the strategic balance of power among nations.

The deals involve the sale of stakes in a number of Russian projects to Chinese firms, an oil supply contract and joint investments in petrochemical projects in Russia.

Rosneft (ROSN.MM), Russia's top oil producer, agreed with China National Chemical Corporation (ChemChina) [CNNCC.UL] that ChemChina would take a 40 percent stake in Rosneft's planned petrochemical complex VNHK in Russia's Far East.

The deal would help Rosneft finance the project and get access to the markets of the Asia-Pacific region, the Russian firm said in a statement.

They also signed a new one-year contract under which Rosneft could supply up to 2.4 million tonnes of crude oil to ChemChina between Aug. 1, 2016, and July 31, 2017.

Rosneft and Beijing Enterprises Group Company Limited [BEGRP.UL] agreed the key terms of a potential sale of a 20 percent stake in Rosneft's oil producing subsidiary, Verkhnechonskneftegaz, to a unit of Beijing Gas Group.

The Russian firm also signed a framework agreement with Sinopec (600028.SS) regarding the construction of a gas processing and petrochemical plant in East Siberia, aiming to set up a joint venture in 2017 focused on the Russian and Chinese markets.

Rosneft CEO Igor Sechin said his company did not plan to reduce its crude supplies to China and would defend its market position amid competition with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iraq, and Iran.

"We will stick to the volumes we have agreed on. It's around 40 million tonnes (per year)," TASS news agency quoted Sechin as saying.

Russia was China's largest crude oil supplier in May for a third month in a row, having surpassed imports from Saudi Arabia.

Global balance

Although economic cooperation was the focus at Putin's talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the leaders also agreed to strengthen global strategic stability.

A statement on the Kremlin website from the two governments called on nations to strictly abide by the norms of international law, keep military capabilities at the minimum level required for national security and refrain from steps aimed at expanding existing military-political alliances.

The statement criticized the deployment of anti-missile systems in Europe and Asia, saying those who deploy them often acted under false pretences.

It did not mention specific countries, but it comes at a time that Russia and NATO are at loggerheads over the western alliance's build up of capabilities in eastern Europe, including missile defense. NATO says its actions are a necessary response to Russia's intervention in Ukraine.

On North Korea, both countries agreed that the stalled six-party talks process remained the best way to achieve the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula, and that all sides should create conditions for talks to resume.

The countries' central banks also signed a memorandum of understanding on setting up a yuan clearing mechanism in Russia that they said would be beneficial to cross-border trade and investment.
