India resorts to firing at LoC on Pakistan Independence Day

RAWALPINDI: Indian troops resorted to unprovoked firing across the Line of Control (LoC) early Sunday on the morning of August 14, the day marking Pakistan's independence 70 years ago.

According to a statement by the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), the cross-border firing took place on the LoC in Nezapir sector near Rawlakot.

The unprovoked firing "started at 0200 hrs lasted till 0830 hrs on 14 August". ISPR said some shells landed at civilian houses, though nobody was reported hurt.

"India used all types of heavy weapons including mortar and artillery. Some of rounds landed at even civilian houses near LoC. No loss of life reported so far," it said.

Pakistani troops befittingly responded to Indian unprovoked firing, said the ISPR.

Independence Day: President pays homage to martyrs of war against terrorism

ISLAMABAD: President Mamnoon Hussain on Sunday hoisted the national flag at an Independence Day event here and said that every single drop of blood of the people martyred due to terrorism is a loan on the nation.

The president and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif also attended the event at the Jinnah Convention Centre in the capital, which was also attended by the chiefs of the three armed forces.

The president in his address said that in the war against terrorism the entire nation is standing side by side with the armed forces.

Pakistan's future is in a strong democracy that would ensure progress, prosperity, and development of the country, he said.

“Our hearts are sad over the Quetta incident,” said President Mamnoon Hussain on the recent massive tragedy in which 73 people lost their lives.

He said that the families bereaved by the Quetta incident should not consider themselves alone.

He also said that the ongoing Operation Zarb-i-Azb is in its last stage, adding that the results of the military operation are encouraging under the National Action Plan.

The president in his address also expressed solidarity with Kashmiris. “We should not forget our Kashmiri brethren on the Independence Day,” he said.

He said that political, moral and diplomatic support would continue for the Kashmiris.

The president urged the nation to stand united and rise above petty differences and carry on the mission of Tehreek e Pakistan, with a commitment in the next phase to make Pakistan a strong democratic entity.

At the event, national anthem was also recited.

Pakistan is celebrating its 70th Independence Day today with national zeal and fervor.

Cellular services suspended in 40 cities on Independence Day

ISLAMABAD: The interior ministry has decided to suspend cellular phone services in 40 cities including Karachi, Islamabad and Lahore as part of security measures on the occasion of Independence Day on Sunday.

Official sources said the mobile phone service will remain suspended from 8:00 a.m to 2:00 p.m in Karachi and from 5:00 a.m to 12:00 p.m in Islamabad’s convention centre and its adjacent areas.

Sources said the Ministry of Interior has forwarded a letter to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to suspend cellular services.

Cellular phones will also remain silent in Peshawar today.

District Administration of Islamabad Capital Territory had earlier recommended Interior Ministry to suspend the mobile networks.

It is pertinent to mention here that security has been tightened all across the country following the Quetta incident. Combing operation by security forces is also underway in various parts of the country.

Saudi sprinter in hijab makes history at Rio Olympics

One of the highlights of the ongoing Rio Olympics came from nowhere else than Saudi Arabia, when its female Sprinter Kariman Abuljadayel participated in the women's 100metre race covered from head-to-toe.

Although 22-year-old Abuljadayel could not qualify for the final event as she finished at the seventh spot, but she made history being the first ever woman from the Kingdom in the sprint 100m.

The news started making rounds on social media as well with several publications bringing to notice the full body gear and hijab donned by the Saudi sprinter.Alongside her, Afghanistan's runner Kamia Yousufi also took part in the women’s 100m.

Completely dressed up in the sweltering heat, Abljadayel’s efforts drew admiration and surprise from several circles.

She is reportedly one of the mere four females participating from the kingdom in the Rio Olympics.

Interestingly, she is not the first Saudi woman to compete on an international level, as track athlete Sarah Athar also participated wearing hijab in 2012 Olympics.

It may be recalled here that the Saudi Olympic Committee lifted a ban on women competing in the Olympics in 2012 despite strong opposition from many quarters of society.

Younis extends Pakistan's lead in fourth Test

LONDON: Younis Khan increased Pakistan's advantage in the fourth Test against England as he built on his overnight century at The Oval on Saturday.

Pakistan were 417 for seven at lunch on the third day, 89 runs ahead of England's first innings 328, as the tourists looked to level the four-match series at 2-2.

Younis was 147 not out, having shared a useful seventh-wicket stand of 77 with Sarfraz Ahmed (44). Wahab Riaz was unbeaten on one.

Pakistan resumed on 340 for six after Asad Shafiq (109) and Younis (101 not out) had both compiled impressive centuries on Friday.

But it was Ahmed, 17 not out overnight, who was the initial aggressor on Saturday as he scored in typically brisk fashion.

The wicket-keeper leg-glanced both James Anderson and Chris Woakes for four.

By contrast it took Younis 13 balls to score his first run Saturday.

But when James Anderson gave him width outside off stump, Younis responded by cutting England's all-time leading wicket-taker in front of point for four.

And when Younis off-drove Stuart Broad for a boundary in classic style, it meant Pakistan's seventh-wicket pair had shared a fifty stand in 110 balls.

Younis, after his 'settling-in' period Saturday, looked in ominously good touch as far as England were concerned.

And the 38-year-old's straight-driven fours off all-rounder Woakes and Steven Finn were further evidence of his increasing command at the crease in what was the veteran batsman's 32nd Test century.

Ahmed was eventually out having struck seven fours in 78 balls when he edged a good-length Woakes delivery and opposing wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow held an excellent one-handed catch, diving in front of England captain Alastair Cook at first slip.

Pakistan were now 397 for seven, with Woakes having taken his 26th wicket this series ? a marked contrast to the mere 16 the improving all-rounder managed in his first eight Tests.

The score had moved on to 403 for seven when Younis was given out lbw for 133 to tall fast bowler Finn.

But Younis immediately reviewed Bruce Oxenford's decision and, with replays showing the ball going over the top of the stumps, the Australian umpire's verdict was reversed.

Moeen Ali's bowling has proved costly this series and the off-spinner's one over before lunch went for nine runs as Younis drove and swept him for two fours.

CM Sindh orders cancellation of over 500,000 unverified arms licences

KARACHI: Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah on Saturday issued instructions to cancel over half a million unverified arms licences issued in the province over the three years.

Over the last 36-months the provincial governmnent issued one million arms licences of which verification was concluded for only 450,000 licences.

It has been decided that the Sindh government will cancel unverified licences in the coming week, following which the Sindh home department post details regarding the 550,000 canceled arms licences on its website.

For those arms licence holders who were unable to have their licences verified due to being out of station or other reasons, may still be issued arms licences after special permission is granted from senior officials if they submit the required documents for verification.

Earlier on Friday while addressing a programme at the Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) the chief minister said the government had extended the date for verification multiple times but added, "I have refused to extend the further and have cancelled over 550,000 license which had not been verified so far."

Long life, very long cigar: Cuban dedicates a monster smoke to Fidel Castro

HAVANA: A Cuban cigar maker broke his own record on Friday by rolling the world's longest cigar at 90 meters (295 feet), the length of a football field, dedicating the monster smoke to Fidel Castro ahead of the retired leader's 90th birthday.

Castro, who took power in Cuba's 1959 revolution and ruled for nearly half a century, was often seen puffing on his favoured, long and thin lancero model until he quit in 1985.

"I want to dedicate this to a beloved Comandante Fidel Castro," said Jose Castelar Cairo, better known as "Cueto", who has won the world record five times before.

Cuba is awash with tributes to Castro ahead of his birthday on Saturday. Earlier on Friday, 90 people donated blood at a small school in Artemisa province in his honour.

Cueto eclipsed his previous record of around 82 meters (270 feet) with his new masterpiece, which took 10 days to roll with the help of several assistants in an old Spanish colonial era fort overlooking Havana Bay.

Cigars have been Cuba's signature product ever since Christopher Columbus saw natives smoking rolled up tobacco leaves when he first sailed to the Caribbean island in 1492.

For Cueto, a 72-year-old who learnt cigar rolling when he was 5 years old, it is a matter of national pride for Cuba to keep the record.

"The best tobacco in the world is Cuban so I think Cuba should keep the record for the biggest cigar," he said, noting it was a challenging task.

The length of the cigar was verified by a British Embassy official, who said the information would be sent in a letter to Guinness World Records requesting confirmation of the record.

Remembering 'queen of pop' Nazia Hasan 16 years after her death

Pakistani music’s “queen of pop” Nazia Hassan’s 16th death anniversary is being observed on Saturday.

The iconic singer was born on April 3, 1965 and passed away on this date in 2000 due to lung cancer.

Nobody could have guessed that Nazia who started her music career at the age of 10, would go on to become one of the most conspicuous female singers of the subcontinent.

Her debut song “Aap Jaisa Koi” in 1980 shot her to fame. For Nazia, it was merely the beginning.

Along with her brother Zohaib Hassan, she released her album Disco Deewane in 1981.

Her songs ‘Dosti’, ‘Disco Deewane’, ‘Aankhen Milane Wale’, ‘Boom Boom’ and 'Dil ki Lagi' are still timeless.

Nazia was not only blessed with an angelic voice to serenade audiences, but also with an empathetic heart. Her philanthropic work made her win several accolades.

In 1991, she joined the United Nations and also worked for UNICEF.

For Nazia’s great achievements and contributions, the government of Pakistan presented Nazia “Pride of Performance” award, which is considered as the highest civil award of Pakistan. The award was presented to Nazia’s mother “Muniza Basir” by Pervez Musharraf on 23rd March, 2002.

Samia Shahid's first husband confesses to murder: police sources

JHELUM:  Samia Shahid?s first husband confessed to strangulating her to death, police sources confirmed.

?I strangled Samia to death using a dupatta,? Chaudhry Shakeel said in a statement recorded with the police, sources said.

Samia?s cousin Chaudhry Mubeen who was also a suspect in the murder case is innocent, sources added.

In July Samia, originally from Bradford, went to visit her father in a village called ?Poteh? near Dina on July 14. Her family, who are also British nationals, were in Pakistan following a bereavement within the family.

She was found dead on July 20, in mysterious circumstances.

Samia Shahid?s family insisted she died of a heart attack. Later they changed their statement to claim that she had committed suicide.

Samia Shahid?s husband Syed Mukhtar Kazam insisted that she was the victim of a so-called honour killing because she had rebelled against wishes of the family, divorced her first husband Muhammad Shakeel and married him in Bradford in 2014.

A month after investigations into the case, Samia Shahid?s family refused to accept her second marriage and declared Mukhtar Kazam a fraud.

After the case gathered international attention Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif took notice.

A postmortem report on July 28 declared the victim?s neck had a 9 cm long and 5 cm wide wound. Before she died her nose and mouth had bled. The cause of her death was not a heart attack in fact she was choked to death.

PM performs Shorkot-Khanewal Motorway groundbreaking

SHORKOT: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif performed the groundbreaking of the third section of the Motorway (M-4) Shorkot-Khanewal on Saturday.

The prime minister while addressing the participants of the groundbreaking ceremony said that the route of Faisalabad and Gojra has been completed.

Nawaz lauded his government’s efforts to strengthen infrastructure of the country and said that first time in the country’s history a network of roads was placed in this region.

“The time will come when G.T. road will link with Motorway at several places,” said Nawaz.

He said that these initiatives did not start from here but from China’s boundary, adding that the network of roads will reach Karachi and Gwadar as well.

Within 17 years no new motorway has been made, he said, adding that none of the previous governments had a vision like this for the country.

The premier also talked about the power shortage in the country and said that three years ago, the problem of loadshedding was at its peak.

“The way work is being carried out on the loadshedding issue, it is in front of everyone,” he said.

The prime minister said that till 2018, Pakistan will be free from loadshedding.

PM Nawaz also did not spare the opposition in his address and said “serious politics is not done from containers, it’s not a one-day or test match.”

The total cost of the third section of the Motorway  is estimated to be around 22 billion rupees and said to be completed within a span of two years.

The Shorkot-Khanewal section will be completed in two phases. The first phase will be composed of 31 kilometers from Shorkot to Deenpur, and the second phase from Deenpur to Khanewal will be 34 kms long.

For the project, Asian Development and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank had contributed funding through co financing.

Olympians use ancient Hijama therapy to cure body pain

Ever wondered why so many Olympians including the celebrated swimmer Michael Phelps have dark red circles marked on their bodies.

Swimmers and gymnasts particularly those representing the United States are covered in these marks. The reason is an ancient medication called the cupping therapy?more popularly known as Hijama in the sub-continent and middle east region.

The therapy involves placing a glass cup on a person?s body. The practitioner lights a flame on top of the cup which burns out oxygen and causes a vacuum. As a result the cup sticks to the skin and draws blood to thesurface causing these red marks which typically stay around for a few days.

Though the therapy has no scientifically proven benefits athletes claim it reduces body pain, the BBC reported.

Alex Naddour, a US gymnast told USA Today that money he spent on cupping therapy was "better than any money I've spent on anything else".

"That's been the secret that I have had through this year that keeps me healthy," Naddour told the paper, adding that it had saved him from "a lot of pain".

The marks visible on Michael Phelps body got people talking on social with some guessing he might have fallen asleep on his medals.

The cupping therapy is commonly called Hijama has been practiced my Muslims for centuries, with some reports claiming that it was the practice of the Prophet (P.b.u.h.).
