8,610 people were killed in Karachi in last six years, says CTD report

KARACHI: According to a report of the anti-terrorism department, the CTD, 23 groups have been involved in incidents of targeted killings in Karachi, said Shahzeb Khanzada on the Geo News programme, ?Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath?, on Monday. He said that out of the 23 groups involved in incidents of targeted killings, people from only three groups were arrested while the law-enforcement agencies had not got a clue about the remaining 20 groups.

Shahzeb said that the CTD report says that 8,610 people were killed in Karachi in the last six years. In this context, Geo News correspondent Talha Hashmi said on the programme that the study report was compiled by the CTD, and it was based on their own research and information.

Talha Hashmi said that according to the CTD research, 23 groups are involved in target killings in Karachi. Members of only three groups had been arrested while nobody knows who the remaining 20 groups are working for.

Commenting on the coup attempt in Turkey, Shahzeb Khanzada said that democratic rule was toppled in Turkey on four occasions in the past.

He said that the people of Turkey suppressed the coup attempt on Friday night by coming out onto the streets. Those who came out onto the streets to save democracy included those as well who had not been happy with the government.

Shahzeb said that the events in Turkey had started a debate in Pakistan as well. Some people are saying that perhaps the people of Pakistan are not as democracy-loving as the Turks are. He said that Imran Khan made a controversial statement, and despite heavy criticism, Imran Khan has not changed his statement. Shahzeb said that Tayyip Erdogan has also been accused of corruption, misuse of authority and nepotism. As president, he had the world?s biggest palace built for himself over an area of 50 acres and at a cost of $350 million. Erdogan government faces the charge of $100 billion corruption. There is one more allegation which says that Erdogan and his family are involved in oil trade with Daesh. There is also a charge of rigging the 2014 election.

Commenting on Imran Khan?s controversial statement, a leader of the Tehreek-e-Insaf, Imran Ismail, while talking to Shahzeb Khanzada on the programme, said that Imran Khan had only made a general statement. He said Erdogan brought economic prosperity to Turkey. He generated employment for the people, brought down the IMF loan to zero, which earned him an enmity from the international agencies.

Imran Ismail said the Tehreek-e-Insaf will not accept martial law in any form. He said that Imran Khan had only repeated what the common man has been saying. The people of Pakistan have not gotten any benefit from democracy.

In a different segment of the programme, Federal Minister for Planning, Ahsan Iqbal, while commenting on the China Pakistan Economic Corridor, said the government has been working on the project whole-heartedly. He does not think there is any other project which transformed in just three years time from a paper to $46 billion portfolios.

Responding to a question, Ahsan Iqbal said that China has appreciated our role on every forum.

In a still different segment of the programme, special assistant to the prime minister, Haroon Akhtar, while commenting on the matter of property tax, told Shahzeb Khanzada that the government has held meetings with the representatives of the country?s real estate associations in a very cordial environment. He said the representatives of the real estate associations had two major concerns. One of the concerns related to the choice of a mechanism to be adopted for ascertaining market value of a property, and the second concern pertained to the question what is to become of the transactions that took place before the 1st of July? The government is ready to talk to them on both these concerns.

Commenting on the glorious victory at Lords, Shahzeb Khanzada said the Pakistani cricket team brought a smile on the people?s faces and lifted the nation from the despair it had fallen into due to recent national tragedies and deaths like the murder of Amjad Sabri and the death of Abdul Sattar Edhi. In such a gloomy atmosphere, our cricket team scored a glorious victory in the first Test against England. This glorious win lifted the morale of the nation. For the first time in the last 20 years, our national team won a test match at Lords, incidentally the venue where six years ago the team had suffered the ignominy of spot fixing. The nation is still celebrating the victory at Lords and paid tribute to the Jawans of the Pakistan Army and their trainers. The entire world is discussing our moment of glory.

Commenting on the murder of Qandeel Baloch, Shahzeb Khanzada said that daily Jang had carried a 100-word story penned by Mubashar Zaidi in which he described a different aspect of honour killing.

Mubashar Zaidi wonders if the matter of honour only concerns men, and that a man can do anything and nobody would bring honour into the matter. Mubashar Zaidi says that both man and woman are human beings, and how come man assumes the role of custodian of honour.

Opposition to hold no further talks with govt on Panama ToRs

ISLAMABAD: The joint opposition on Tuesday decided not to hold any further talks with the government on the terms of reference (ToRs) of Panama leaks probe.

Opposition parties today held a meeting in Islamabad to discuss prospects of Panama leaks investigations. The joint opposition decided to table a bill in the Parliament, which will be named as Corruption Bill.

The meeting, however, turned down the suggestion of taking to streets in protest against the government for using delaying tactics in finalizing the ToRs of Panama Papers probe.

An unprecedented leak of 11.5 million files from a Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca, spanning over nearly 40 years, spelled out the extensive use of tax havens by politicians, world leaders, and celebrities to launder money and evade taxes had taken the world by storm earlier this year.

Many Pakistanis were also named in the leaked documents.

The documents identify a number of Pakistani business tycoons and politicians including late two-time Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto as well certain members of the ruling Sharif family (excluding PM Nawaz Sharif and his brother Chief Minister of Punjab Shahbaz Sharif) to have used tax havens to hide their wealth.

Abdul Qadir Patel presents himself for arrest

KARACHI: Pakistan People's Party (PPP) leader Abdul Qadir Patel presented himself for arrest at the Boat Basin police station on Tuesday evening, saying he did not flee from the anti-terrorism court (ATC).

Patel?s arrest came hours after an anti-terrorism court turned down an extension in the bail plea of the PPP leader, who faces charges of allegedly sheltering and ordering the medical treatment of terrorists and hardened criminals at the Karachi hospital of former federal minister Dr Asim Hussain.

Police arrested Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leaders Waseem Akhtar and Rauf Siddiqui, and Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP) leader Anis Qaimkhani from outside the courtroom shortly after the judge rejected the bail plea of the suspects in the case.

Patel, however, reportedly fled from the scene.

Speaking to media after arriving at the Boat Basin police station, Patel said that he got late for the hearing of the case and, when he arrived, he saw that the entrance to the courtroom was closed.

The PPP leader said he stood there for some time and left when his lawyer told him that the ATC had turned down his request for extension in bail. He added that he left the ATC thinking of his next step to secure bail extension.

"I didn't run away, I just moved out calmly," Qadir Patel said, adding that he had come for the proceedings of the case all the way from London. "Why would I run then?"

When asked about contacting anyone in his party, he said that he had not yet contacted anyone, adding "Perhaps the party leaders also didn't find it appropriate to contact a worker like me".

Patel said that, had he fled from the court, he would not have returned to present himself to police for arrest. "Even now, no one brought me here, I came myself," he added.

Rangers special powers limited to Karachi only, says Sindh CM

LARKANA/KARACHI: Chief Minister Sindh Qaim Ali Shah on Tuesday said that Rangers have been given special policing powers only in Karachi, not in rest of the province.

"The paramilitary force has no special powers in rest of the province," the Sindh CM said, speaking at a press conference in Larkana.

"These powers were aimed at reducing four most heinous offences i.e. terrorism, target killing, extortion and kidnapping for ransom."

He said that Pakistan Rangers Sindh were not given policing powers in Sindh during last three years, it was only limited to Karachi.

He said the extension in Rangers' powers, as per the law, is given for 120 days and the Sindh government and the central leadership of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) are yet to decide on the extension of these powers once again.

Trump's wife hit by plagiarism controversy

CLEVELAND: Melania Trump until now only a minor presence on the campaign trail found herself caught in an embarrassing plagiarism controversy Tuesday after a prime-time defense of her husband that appeared to be lifted in part from a speech given by Michelle Obama.

No sooner had the poised 46-year-old former model delivered her keynote address to cheering delegates at the Republican National Convention than the unmistakeable similarities to a passage from Obama´s speech to the 2008 Democratic convention came to light.

In both passages, the women are introducing themselves to the American public by speaking of the values that have shaped their lives.

"My parents impressed on me the values: that you work hard for what you want in life. That your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise. That you treat people with respect. They taught me to show the values and morals in my daily life. That is the lesson that I continue to pass along to our son," Melania Trump said.

"And we need to pass those lessons on to the many generations to follow. Because we want our children in this nation to know that the only limit to your achievements is the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them."

In her speech, Michelle Obama said:

"And Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you´re going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don´t know them, and even if you don´t agree with them.

"And Barack and I set out to build lives guided by these values, and pass them on to the next generation. Because we want our children and all children in this nation to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them."

Trump´s senior communications adviser, Jason Miller, issued a statement that sidestepped the plagiarism question while not denying it.

"In writing her beautiful speech, Melania´s team of writers took notes on her life´s inspirations, and in some instances included fragments that reflected her own thinking," he said. "Melania´s immigrant experience and love for America shone through in her speech, which made it such a success."

The speech was the highlight of a chaotic opening day of a Republican convention that is set to formally nominate her husband as the party´s presidential candidate later this week.

A beaming Trump personally introduced his wife to the cheering delegates gathered in Cleveland, breaking with tradition by appearing before his actual nomination.

"It was truly an honor to introduce my wife, Melania. Her speech and demeanor were absolutely incredible. Very proud!" the billionaire tweeted afterwards.

Dr Asim case: Bail rejected for MQM, PSP leaders

KARACHI: The bail extension pleas of Muttahid Qaumi Movement (MQM) leaders Waseem Akhtar, Rauf Siddiqui, and Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP) Anis Qaimkhani were rejected on Tuesday, with reports of police preparing to arrest the Karachi leaders from the court premises.

The leaders had appeared in the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) for the hearing of the Dr Asim Hussain case.

According to reports, the gates of the anti-terrorism courts had been shut, with police personnel not allowing the suspects in the case to leave the court premises.

Sources told Geo News that jail warrants were being prepared for the three leaders, and that they would shortly be shifted to jail.

Speaking to Geo News via telephone, MQM leaders Waseem Akhtar said, "Today is a dark day in the history of Pakistan. We are being framed on the basis of a fake JIT report".

"The judge herself admitted today that there are certain things in the JIT report which she is being forced to accept. There are a lot of personnel in plain clothes inside the courtroom. The gates have been closed and we are not being allowed to leave. Even our lawyers who wants to go to the Sindh High Court to appeal is not being allowed to leave," he said.

"I request the chief justice of Pakistan to take notice of this mockery of the law," he added.

Meanwhile, there were reports that Pakistan People's Party (PPP) leader Abdul Qadir Patel, who was also one of the suspects in the case, was able to escape the court premises.

But, speaking to a Geo News correspondent, Patel said that he had not fled the law, but had arrived at the court and left when he saw that the gates were shut.

He said that he was a political worker, and that he was not going anywhere and would face the courts.

Taiwan bus bursts into flames, killing 26, including 24 tourists from China

TAIPEI: A Taiwan tour bus carrying tourists from China crashed into a highway railing en route to the airport and burst into flames on Tuesday, killing all 26 on board, Taiwanese authorities said.

The bus was carrying 24 tourists on an eight-day tour organised by a travel agency in China´s northeastern province of Liaoning, authorities said in a statement.

The driver and the tour guide, both from Taiwan, were also killed. "The fire moved very fast. All 26 died," Lu Jui-yao, an official with the National Highway Police Bureau, told reporters.

Taiwan is a popular destination for mainland tourists, who provide a major source of tourism revenue for the island.

Traffic accidents in Taiwan involving Chinese tourists are not uncommon. China regards Taiwan as a renegade province and for years travel between the two sides was restricted, but tourist exchanges have deepened over the past two decades, with many Chinese visiting the democratically ruled island for the first time.

The cause of the fire was unclear.

Taiwan authorities were  investigating.

Taiwan's cabinet spokesman, Tung Chen-yuan, said government officials dealing with tourism and China affairs had reached out to their mainland counterparts and that they would help arrange for relatives of the victims to come to Taiwan.

The passengers were on their way to Taoyuan, the island's main airport just south of the capital Taipei, for their flight back to China when the accident happened.

Indian-held Kashmir protests flare, 3 killed as army opens fire

SRINAGAR: Indian soldiers fired on a stone-throwing crowd defying a curfew in the Kashmir region, killing three people, police said on Tuesday, as unrest sparked by the death of a separatist leader flared.

Authorities have imposed a curfew in Muslim-majority Kashmir for 11 days, blocked mobile phones and briefly ordered curbs on newspapers to stop people from gathering and to control the worst outbreak of violence there in six years.

Late on Monday, protesters blocked a main road and threw stones at an army convoy.

"Some miscreants then tried to snatch weapons from the army and tried to set vehicles on fire," a police spokesman said on Tuesday.

The army opened fire after the protesters refused to heed warnings and two women were killed, the spokesman said.

A third person died in hospital on Tuesday, taking the death toll to 42 since protests erupted over the killing of Burhan Wani, a 22-year-commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen militant group on July 9.

About 3,500 people have been hurt, many with eye injuries caused by pellets Indian forces have been firing from a non-lethal weapon. The injuries have fueled anger.

Kashmir is India's only Muslim-majority state and has been contentious since India and Muslim Pakistan were carved out of British-ruled India and declared independent in 1947.

Both sides rule the Himalayan region in part but claim it in full and India has long accused Pakistan of arming separatist militants battling Indian forces in its part of Kashmir. Pakistan denies that.

The young separatist militant Wani represented a new generation of fighters in a region where alienation runs deep even though militant attacks have fallen dramatically since the revolt broke out in 1989.

India's interior minister, Rajnath Singh, said he had ordered security forces to exercise restraint. He told parliament he would visit Kashmir soon and hold talks with people "whose pain is being felt by every Indian".

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, which has long advocated a tough stand on Kashmir, shares power with a regional party in Kashmir and has been criticized for failing to address grievances.

Separatist groups have called for protests after prayers this Friday. Residents said they were running out of cash as banks were shut because of the curfew.

Special court orders freezing of Musharraf's accounts in high treason case

KARACHI: The Special Court constituted to try former president Gen (rtd) Pervez Musharraf for high treason on Tuesday ordered freezing of his accounts through the State Bank of Pakistan.

The three-member Special Court under Justice Mazhar Alam Mian Khel heard the case.

The court in its ruling, ordered the revenue and other authorities to confiscate the details of the former president’s property.

The special court said that all the property records should be submitted to it through the session judge.

During the hearing, Musharraf’s advocate in his argument said that there are others as well who have a share in his property.

Upon which the court responded that whoever the contenders are they should appear before it within six months to present their stance.

The Interior Ministry presented a report related to the ex-president’s assets to the court.

Following which prosecution lawyer Akram Shaikh said that the prosecution had completed the trial in 2014, and only the accused’s statement was to be taken.

The special court said that the matter pertaining to the former president’s property would be resolved according to law.

In the hearing held on July 12, the court had asked the Interior Ministry to submit a response over not providing details of Musharraf’s property.

The court in one of its previous rulings had declared ex-president Musharraf a ‘proclaimed offender’.

In March 2014, Musharraf was formally indicted over treason charges for imposing emergency and the Provisional Constitutional Order on November 3, 2007.
