28 principals of Pak-Turk schools, colleges replaced with locals

LAHORE: The management of the 28 Pak-Turk schools Wednesday replaced the Turkish principals with local senior teachers and vice principals of the schools across the country.

The Board of Directors is, however, intact and overseeing day-to-day affairs of its educational institutions across the country while Turkish teachers would continue teaching as the board counts them among the strong points of the education system.

Reportedly, the replacement of the heads was to thwart any likely move of ?handing over of the control of the school system to any organisation by the government.? Sources in the school management said the decision to replace the Turkish nationals was purely internal. They added the Turkish teachers would continue working on the teaching posts.

A chain of 28 schools and colleges is functioning under the Pak-Turk Education Foundation International Schools and Colleges in Pakistan in different cities including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Multan, Karachi, Hyderabad, Khairpur, Jamshoro and Quetta. The education system, from pre-school to ?A? levels, has a student body of around 11,000 while there are 1,500 staffers of which 150 are Turkish.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Erdogan government wants closure of the education system for its alleged links with the US-based cleric, Fethullah Gulen, who is blamed for the recent coup attempt.

A senior government official seeking anonymity said the closure of the Pak-Turk Schools and Colleges was not possible since fate of thousands of students could not be risked. He, however, added a mechanism might be evolved to run the schools through local and incumbent Turkish government-led set-up. ?However nothing has been finalised so far?, he added.

Punjab School Education Minister Rana Mashhood said the Punjab government would only come into action after instructions from the federal government. He categorically said no policy decision was yet conveyed to the provincial government vis-à-vis fate of the Pak-Turk Education System. To a question, the minister said any decision about the Pak-Turk schools and colleges would only be taken keeping in view the student body.

About the rumours vis-à-vis extension in the ongoing summer vacation, Rana Mashhood said no decision was yet taken in this regard and added the educational institutions would reopen as per schedule announced earlier.

Turkey warns US not to ´sacrifice´ ties over Gulen

ANKARA: Turkey warned the United States on Tuesday not to sacrifice bilateral ties over Pennsylvania-based preacher Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara blames for the failed coup and wants to see extradited.

"If the US does not deliver (Gulen), they will sacrifice relations with Turkey for the sake of a terrorist," Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag told reporters during a televised briefing in the capital Ankara.

Turkey has repeatedly pressed Washington to extradite the 75-year-old cleric to face trial over the July 15 attempted putsch, which saw a rogue military faction try to oust President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Gulen strongly denies Ankara´s accusations and his lawyer on Friday said Turkey had failed to provide "a scintilla" of proof to support its claim.

Bozdag asked rhetorically how Washington would react if a person responsible for violence in the US was being hosted by Turkey.

"What if there was an attempted assassination of (President Barack) Obama while he was on holiday with his wife and children, if the White House was bombed, if tanks were driven over people, if soldiers shot at people from helicopters and the terrorist head responsible for all this was in Turkey?"

The coup attempt took place while Erdogan was on a family holiday in southern Turkey and saw both the parliament and the area around the presidential palace bombed from the air.

´Inflammatory rhetoric´

US State Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Trudeau said some of the rhetoric coming from Turkey was not "helpful" and that Washington expected Turkish officials "to be responsible in their statements".

"We believe our relations and our partnership and our friendship with Turkey is strong," she told reporters, adding that any extradition of Gulen would be "a legal, technical process... governed by the 1981 extradition treaty signed by both of our countries".

She condemned claims in the Turkish press that the Wilson Center, a US academic institution, was involved in the coup.

"This sort of conspiracy theory, inflammatory rhetoric -- as I said -- is absolutely not helpful," she said. "Conspiracy theories get us nowhere."

Bozdag said if the US did not extradite Gulen, relations between the two would be negatively affected despite being "two friendly countries" at present.

The minister added that anti-US sentiment had shot up in Turkey over the Gulen issue and urged Washington to act before it worsened.

"It is in the hands of the US to stop Turkish anti-US feeling becoming hate," he said.

US Secretary of State John Kerry, who could visit Turkey in late August according to Ankara, said just days after the coup attempt that Turkey must present "genuine evidence" and "not allegations" against Gulen for his extradition.

Turkey has also come under heavy criticism from the West over the extent of the crackdown on those accused of links to the coup and the Gulen movement.

Since July 15, tens of thousands of people from the military, judiciary, civil service and education suspected of links with the movement have been sacked or detained.

Bozdag said around 16,000 were in custody ahead of trial while another 6,000 people were in detention awaiting initial court hearings.

The mass dismissals have created gaps in state institutions and Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on Tuesday 25,000 new teachers and police officers would be employed after the purge.

Man scales Trump Tower, NY police mobilize

NEW YORK: A man was scaling Trump Tower in New York on Wednesday using suction cups and prompting a police response outside the Manhattan headquarters of the Republican nominee for president.

"We are sending our units there to try to find out what´s going on," a New York police spokesman told AFP.

Television footage broadcast by ABC News showed the shaggy-haired man dressed in shorts and a T-shirt, apparently using suction cups to mount his ascent.

A video clip and pictures posted on Twitter showed him climbing up the outside face of the tower as uniformed officers looked on.

Police said they had no immediate information about the person´s identity or his motive for scaling the glass skyscraper. They were alerted by the incident at around 3:40 pm (1940 GMT), the spokesman said.

New York billionaire and real estate developer Donald Trump lives in a marble triplex at the top of the 68-story building, which is also the headquarters of his Trump Organization and election campaign.

The Republican nominee was outside the city on Wednesday, holding a rally in Virginia with another event planned later in Florida.

He unleashed a firestorm on Tuesday when he suggested that "Second Amendment people" -- those who support gun rights -- could take action to stop Hillary Clinton from appointing US Supreme Court justices as president.

Since he launched his controversial, media-saturated bid for the White House, the tower on New York´s prestigious Fifth Avenue has become a magnet for tourists.

Members of the public are free to roam inside its public atrium until 10 pm most days as part of an agreement that allowed Trump to build 20 stories higher.

Combing operation launched in Quetta after deadly bombing

QUETTA: The military on Wednesday kicked off a special combing operation in Quetta upon the directives of Army Chief General Raheel Sharif following a deadly bombing in the provincial capital that had left at least 70 people dead and wounded over 110 on Monday.

Yesterday at a Corps Commander Conference, the COAS had directed the commanders and intelligence outfits that they should further intensify the combing and targeted operations with full vigour to eliminate terrorists and sleeper cells.

He had also directed to provide all necessary assistance to the provincial law enforcement agencies (LEAs) in their capacity building through training, resourcing and planning so as to integrate them effectively in counterterrorism operations.

Security personnel, today, launched a special combing operation in Quetta and its suburbs sweeping different areas for suspected elements. Similar operations have been ongoing in different cities of the country.

Dozens of suspects have been rounded up in search operations by LEAs in Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar and other cities since yesterday.

Two Afghan intelligence agents were arrested today during a search operation in Peshawar’s Regi area, officials of the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) said.

They also claimed to have seized a six kilogram explosive device installed inside a computer from suspects, Ateeq and Amanullah.

Insomnia, sleep apnea tied to risk of second stroke

People with sleep disorders like sleep apnea, insomnia or restless leg syndrome may have a poorer recovery after a stroke and higher risk of a second stroke, according to a review of existing research.

The authors recommend screening for these sleep disorders among people who have had a stroke or mini-stroke.

?We have been aware in neurology for a couple of years already that breathing disturbances are a risk factor for stroke,? said coauthor Dr. Dirk M. Hermann of University Hospital Essen in Essen, Germany.

?Sleep has restorative functions for the brain and is important for storing information we collect during the night, which explains why stroke recovery is so much affected by sleep disturbances,? he said.

But in stroke treatment and recovery, treating acute issues tends to take precedent over sleep studies, Hermann told Reuters Health.

In 29 studies of what?s known as sleep disordered breathing, such as sleep apnea, the researchers found that breathing issues tend to precede a stroke and are often tied to strokes that happen during sleep.

Hypersomnia, or sleeping too much, mostly emerges after a stroke, and may resolve in a few months but overall fatigue can last for years, the researchers report in Neurology.

Insomnia is also common for stroke survivors, and in most cases it was an issue for patients before the stroke occurred.

In two studies, more than 10 percent of stroke survivors experienced restless leg syndrome within one month of their stroke. Stroke survivors with restless leg syndrome were also more likely than others to have diabetes.

More than half of stroke patients have some sleep disordered breathing issue, like sleep apnea, before their stroke, and treating the issue with a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine reduces stroke risk and improves outcomes after a stroke, the researchers write.

People who suffer a stroke should be screened for any sleep problems, and sleep apnea should be treated. There is less evidence that treating sleep-wake disorders like insomnia or sleeping too much with medications improves stroke recovery, they conclude.

People, especially doctors, should be aware of the link between sleep issues and stroke, Hermann said.

?We have to consider that we have quite good ways of diagnosing sleep disturbances and effective means of treating them,? he said.

It?s up to national associations to define which way it is most appropriate to integrate sleep screening and treatment into stroke care, he said.

?Typical post-stroke workup involves testing for many risk factors including carotid atherosclerosis, atrial fibrillation, hypercoagulable states, hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes among others,? said Karin Johnson, medical director of Baystate Health Regional Sleep Program in Greenfield, Massachusetts, who was not part of the new study.

?Obstructive sleep apnea not only worsens all of these conditions but even with adjusting for other causes doubles the risk of stroke,? but many people are not currently tested for obstructive sleep apnea after having a stroke, Johnson told Reuters Health by email.

?Even if someone has normal good quality sleep, just being sleep deprived can also increase the risk of stroke and other cardiovascular conditions like heart attacks so for most people trying to get at least 7 hours of sleep a night is the best to give enough sleep to protect and strengthen our body,? said Johnson, who is also an assistant professor of neurology at University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester.

If you have loud snoring, frequent urination at night, gasping arousals, disrupted sleep, unrefreshing sleep, daytime sleepiness or fatigue, or no symptoms but signs like difficult to control high blood pressure, a large neck, and obesity, ask you doctors to test you for sleep apnea so you can get treated early before other complications arise, she said.

At least 25 wounded in PKK attack in southeast Turkey: official

ISTANBUL: At least 25 people were wounded in a bombing on Wednesday blamed on Kurdish rebels targeting a police vehicle in southeastern Turkey, a Turkish official said.

The bomb went off close to a hospital in the town of Kiziltepe south of Mardin city as the police vehicle passed, wounding 25 people, said the official.

Pictures showed the force of the explosion caused considerable damage to nearby buildings and vehicles.

A near simultaneous blast in Diyarbakir city to the north left at least five people wounded, an AFP correspondent at the scene said.

Both blasts are believed to have been carried out by the Kurdistan Workers? Party (PKK), the Turkish official said.

Hundreds of members of the Turkish security forces have been killed by the PKK in attacks since the collapse of a two-year ceasefire in July last year.

Pogba jackpot for United

PARIS: The world record fee paid out by Manchester United for Paul Pogba could pay dividends for the Premier League club as long as the French star lives up to his billing, experts say.

An increase in kit sales, an increase in the image rights of the player, and potentially an added value on a future transfer could see United ending up turning a profit from football’s most expensive player.

Experts at consultants Deloitte see the acquisition of Pogba as United’s possible bid to emulate the "Galacticos" busines model set by Real Madrid, the world’s richest club with an annual revenue of 577 million euros (£495 million) in 2015.

"That’s what it really looks like," said economist Bastien Drut in comments to AFP.

He highlights the recruitment of "big personalities" such as new manager Jose Mourinho, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and especially Pogba, who is capable of "maximising revenues through his marketability" along the lines of such trademark names as Cristiano Ronaldo or James Rodriguez, transfered for respective goldmines and who have become unstoppable cash generators.

"Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer broke even after two or three years just from kit sales," according to Drut.

"Manchester United is a little bit like Real Madrid, it’s a brand recognised throughout the world, so it is possible to imagine that profit can be made from Pogba’s transfer in three or four years time."

But Pogba must deliver the goods on the field and live up to his huge potential, according to Drut.

Pogba is already a fan favourite: he is the eighth highest jersey seller in the world -- his Juventus kit sold 667,000 units last year according to the Euromericas agency.

That’s promising for Manchester United, despite the Frenchman being behind his two future teammates Zlatan Ibrahimovic (seventh, 865,000 sales with PSG) and Wayne Rooney (sixth, 877,000 sales) and he’s still very far from Lionel Messi whose shirt is the most sold worldwide (1,958,000).

. Marketing potential and image rights

In addition to kit sales, the marketing potential of the player known as "la Pioche" emerges as the other main income source for Manchester United.

With his unique hair style, his popularity with young fans and his millions of followers on social media (6.9 million on Instagram) the 23-year old is, just like David Beckham, a "marquee-player".

That expression defines a player who can bring "an added economique value" to his club, sports marketing specialist Lionel Maltese told AFP.

United’s board members are counting on that. According to French newspaper L’Equipe, the player will earn 13 million euros a year (£11 million), but will give 80% of his image rights to the Red Devils, at an estimated value of 45 million euros (£39 million) a year.

"There is going to be a huge marketing push by Manchester United on Pogba," said Maltese.

In short the club seeks to use Pogba’s image rights to attract new sponsors, building revenue while at the same time snatching market share from sporting financial rivals such as Real Madrid and Barcelona who exploit Ronaldo and Messi as their banners.

Among marketing tools could be the partnership of United and kit provider Adidas who are also Pogba’s sponsor. This partnership is already the world’s most expensive (worth approximately 940 million euros, £806 million, over 10 years) and could even increase with the arrival of the Frenchman.

"There are going to be projects implemented to mass sell Pogba and Manchester United spinoff products and reach even more clients," said Maltese.

A profitable sale

Despite a record amount of money spent by the Red Devils and of the fruitful partnership to come, Pogba is not tied to the club for the rest of his career. If he fulfills his huge potential, Manchester United could even sell him on at a profit, said Drut.

"If we assume that the transfer fees continue to increase in the next few years, we can eventually anticipate that Manchester United could sell Pogba on for the same price or even a higher price" says Drut.

"His value can’t be multiplied 10 or 20 times but it can grow by 5% or 10%. The profit margin is there but it isn’t very big", said Wladimir Andreff, an expert in football club economy.

Samia Shahid murder case: Mother, sister to be included in investigation

JHELUM: The police have decided to include the mother and sister in the murder investigation of British national Samia Shahid who was allegedly killed for 'honour' by her family on a visit to Pakistan.

Police sources told Geo News on Wednesday that Samia’s mother Imtiaz Bibi and sister Madiha Shahid were among those nominated by her second husband Mukhtar Kazam in the case.

Police officials said that both Imtiaz Bibi and Madiha Shahid would be contacted after August 13 and would be informed that they have been made part of the investigation.

They further said that if they do not cooperate than both would be brought to Pakistan through Interpol.

Samia married Mukhtar Kazam less than two years ago against her family's wishes and went to live with his family in Dubai.

In July Samia, originally from Bradford, went to visit her father in a village called “Poteh” near Dina on the 14th of July. Her family, who are also British nationals, were in Pakistan following a bereavement within the family.

It is understood that after marrying Mukhtar Kazam, the couple had faced death threats.

After Samia’s death in mysterious circumstances, her husband was told she died of a heart attack but the parents lodged a statement saying she committed suicide.

The most dapper newspaper salesman you will ever see

NEW YORK: It is possible to mistake photographs of Steeve Mackaya published recently in the New York Times as a fashion photo-shoot. He has been described by the photographer who has chronicled him attired in his many boldly coloured suits ?like a piece of New York street art, totally unbelievable and amazing.?

Mackaya, 30, can be found in Chelsea every morning dressed in one of his colourful suits sitting atop his wheelchair with three stacks of newspapers and milk crates.

He arrived from Gabon on the west coast of Africa in 2013 as part of a United Nations youth delegation and applied for asylum. Upon failing he started living in a homeless shelter and began selling newspapers on a corner in Chelsea.

The photographer Moshe Katvan who befriended Mackaya and learned about him over time, told the New York Times he can?t store his suits at the homeless shelter and instead stores them at a friend?s place nearby.

Crippled by Polio in childhood Mackaya?s spirit proves that disability cannot dampen one?s dignity or resourcefulness.

Better civil-military ties improved law and order: Nisar

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Wednesday said Pakistan's security situation had gotten better following harmony and improved relations between civilian and military forces in the country.

Speaking on the floor of the National Assembly here today following a high-level meeting to discuss implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP), Chaudhry Nisar said that the country was battling both internal and external enemies.

He said that at the time of negotiations with the Taliban, a lot of propaganda was generated about the government and the Army not being on the same page, but the military had fully supported the talks and then Army Chief General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani had said that there was no better option.

Political differences had existed, he said, noting that the PPP, ANP and MQM had serious reservations but later all parties had agreed upon the negotiations.

"We gave our all to the negotiations," he said, reiterating that the military had fully supported the government on the matter.

Nisar said Pakistan's security situation had improved following 2.5 years of operations against the terrorists.

He also said he had praised former president Asif Ali Zardari when he had expressed approval of the military courts.

Discussing the government’s efforts to negotiate with the Taliban in the past, Nisar said it was the first time the militants had agreed to come to the table. However, the government had realized soon after that they were playing a double-game.

"They were talking to us but also pressurizing us at the same time," he said.

It was at that time the Prime Minister decided to silently initiate civil-military talks over the matter, he said.

The talks with the Taliban continued for three months, but after the Karachi airport attack the prime minister decided in a meeting that we had had enough, he said.

Nisar contended that the high-level meeting to discuss implementation on the National Action Plan, presided by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif earlier today, failed to bring under discussion several crucial issues.

Another meeting would be called on Monday or Tuesday where all of the ministers will be invited, Nisar said.

"We decided in the aftermath of the Karachi airport attack that we would have to use another option," said the interior minister.

That decision was made in May 2014, and on June 7 the same year the prime minister decided that the operation would start a week later, he said.

All political parties had agreed not to oppose the military operation, he said, adding that no military operation can succeed without full backing of the public and the government.

"The dramatic improvement in Pakistan's security situation is the result of this cooperation," he said.

Nisar said that the entire nation needs to unite to root out terrorism from the country.

"The Armed Forces have a big role in the war against terrorism, but intelligence agencies and police also have a role to play," he said.

Nisar said that officers standing guard on the frontlines fight the worst kind of terrorists, even though they are not trained to.

"Everyone must play a role in the National Action Plan. The ministries of the federal government and all four provincial governments have a role to play," he said.

Nisar said he had never criticized any provincial government. Although he did point out weaknesses in the meetings, he had never given a public statement, he said.

Condemning the terrorist attack in Quetta, which killed over 70 and injured more than 110 on Monday, Nisar said the tragedy was horrendous but the people of Pakistan had seen a time when incidents like this occurred every other day.

"These terrorists who are playing with fire and blood in our country are unable to sow conflicts between us," Nisar said, vowing that the nation would fight back with even greater determination and completely exterminate terrorism from Pakistan.

England unchanged for final Test against Pakistan

LONDON: England will field an unchanged team for the fourth Test against Pakistan at The Oval, captain Alastair Cook said Wednesday.

The selectors thought about handing a home debut to leg-spinner Adil Rashid but have now stuck with the same XI that won the third Test by 141 runs at Edgbaston on Sunday.

As a result, England's five-man attack will again feature four seamers and off-break bowler Moeen Ali as the specialist spinner.

England lead the four-match series 2-1 heading into Thursday's match in south London.

"I think the pitch will turn later in the game, but we feel the seamers are bowling well and Mo took a massive stride in the last game," Cook told reporters at The Oval on Wednesday.

England will hold all nine bilateral series titles against the world's other Test-playing nations if they avoid defeat at The Oval.

Should England take the series 3-1 and India do not win both of the remaining matches in their series away to the West Indies, Cook's men could go top of the world Test rankings.

With plenty resting on the outcome of this match, Cook said now was not the time to bring in Rashid so the Yorkshireman could gain more experience ahead of England's upcoming tours in the more spin-friendly conditions of Bangladesh and India.

"This series is very much alive and we want to play well and win the series rather than look ahead and prepare for the winter," said Cook.

"He (Rashid) is going to keep gaining experience in the one-day internationals.

"In an ideal world you'd like to give him a go, but international cricket is not about giving people a go.

"The guys are in a good space."

Cook was a member of the last England side that went to the top of the International Cricket Council's Test rankings back in 2012.

And the opening batsman said an emerging England team had some way to go to match the experienced side of four years ago.

"I genuinely would say it has come a little bit early for this side," said Cook.

"If it comes (going to the top of the rankings) it would be a brilliant achievement. There are still questions to be answered.

"We're not at the same level as 2012."

Discussing the government?s efforts to negotiate with the Taliban in the past, Nisar said it was the first time the militants had agreed to come to the table.

Opposition leader slams govt's counterterrorism measures

ISLAMABAD: Opposition leader Khursheed Shah said Wednesday that terrorist attacks in the country had gotten worse over the years despite the opposition's cooperation with the government over counterterrorism measures.

Addressing National Assembly on Wednesday, Shah said,” They said let’s make NACTA functional. We said okay. They asked for National Action Plan. We said okay. They asked for military courts. We even cooperated on that. But despite all the cooperation, more ruthless terrorist attacks have happened.”

He said that opposition has cooperated with the government on every step in this regard. However, excuses have been made by blaming different banned outfits after every terrorist activity.

“For how much longer would we shed tears for the innocents killed during terrorist attacks? It was the responsibility of the state to provide security to its citizens”, said an emotional Khursheed Shah.

He further said that the government never took serious steps on how to stop the terrorists from carrying out their attacks.

Opposition stages walkout

Later on, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) member staged a walkout from National Assembly citing Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan’s attitude.

However, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif spoke to Khursheed Shah and brought back opposition members to NA.

Days after surviving a plane crash, Indian man wins $1 million lottery

DUBAI: An Indian expatriate living in Dubai was only following his habit when he purchased a Dubai Duty Free Millennium Millionaire ticket on his way home for Eid, his lucky numbers, EK521 and 0845.

Returning to Dubai a fleet manager by profession Mohammad Basheer Abdul Khadar boarded the Emirates Airlines flight EK521 from Thiruvananthapuram in the south Indian state of Kerala. Little did he know it would be a near death experience.

It was nothing short of a miracle Khadar told Gulf News when recalling his escape from the ill fated flight that crash landed at Dubai airport.

Indian cricketer fined $300 for lion selfies

AHMEDABAD: Indian cricketer Ravindra Jadeja has been fined $300 for clicking selfies with endangered Asiatic lions in the country’s west despite a ban on such photos, a senior forest official said on Wednesday.

Officials had ordered an investigation in June after photos of Jadeja posing in front of a pride of lions during a safari in Gir forest went viral on social media.

"We had instituted a probe and called Jadeja for a statement," A.P. Singh, chief forest conservator in Gujarat state, told AFP.

"But since he was not available, his father-in-law Hardevsinh Solanki gave a written statement on his behalf and paid the fine of 20,000 rupees ($300)," he said.

In one of the photos on Instagram, the all-rounder is seen smiling and pointing at a pride of big cats resting behind him with a caption "family photo, having good time in Sasan (Gir)".

Another is a selfie of Jadeja and his wife as a lion looks on in the background.

The 27-year-old is currently on tour with the Indian team in the West Indies.

The photos were taken just days after the Gujarat forestry department advised tourists and locals against taking selfies with lions, following a spate of attacks in which villagers were killed or injured by the cats.

Gir wildlife sanctuary is a popular big cat safari destination and the only place where Asiatic lions remain in the wild.

Asiatic lions, slightly smaller than their African cousins and with a fold of skin along their bellies, have been increasing in numbers in Gir, with 523 recorded in the latest census.

Rawalpindi knife attacks: Four suspects arrested as terror prevails

RAWALPINDI: Police on Wednesday took into custody four men suspected of involvement in knife attacks targeting women in the city.

The mysterious knife-wielding group, which attacks only women after dark, has stabbed 32 women in Rawalpindi since February, of whom one died while others were injured. In the latest attack, the group stabbed a nurse to death and injured two others on Sunday night.

In their initial investigation, police said one or two men may be involved in the attacks. Police sources said they have recorded the statement by the nurse who was injured in the attack on Sunday.

The nurse said in her statement that she had been returning from Saddar area after shopping along with her fellow nurse when they were attacked near Defence Chowk.

She was walking ahead of her friend when she heard a scream. The nurse said she was also attacked the moment she turned to look.

Her friend, Anum Naz, later succumbed to her wounds.

What has residents as well as authorities perplexed is the fact that the attackers make no demands and do not discriminate. They target women after dark irrespective of age, attire and appearance.

All of the attacks took place in the remits of Morgah police station, which include Kot Kalian and Rabia Bungalows.

Around 25 women were injured with a knife-like object in the first three weeks of February this year.

Six months later, four women were attacked.

The renewed attacks and the nurse?s death have once again spread terror in the city.

Chakwal?s slum girl beats all odds to secure distinction in SSC exam

LAHORE: 16-year-old Nargis Gul from the slums of Chakwal has just proved that there is no obstacle that cannot be overcome by sheer hard work and determination.

Nargis, born and raised in the slums, decided not to let the odds come in the way of her dream to excel in education. She secured 1,004 marks in Senior Secondary Certificate (SSC) annual examination and also topped her class.

Nargis is now a step closer to realizing her dream of becoming a doctor and serving the nation. She is currently enrolled in FSc Pre-Medical at Chakwal’s Sufa College on a full scholarship.

Hailing from the Thaneel Fatohi area in Chakwal district, Nargis lost her father some years ago. She is now a ray of hope and pride for her ailing mother, who despite the harsh circumstances wanted her daughter to continue her education.

Although Nargis’ mother, Asiya Bibi, could not continue beyond primary education, she is determined to see her only daughter grow into an educated, successful professional one day.

Nargis, who says she was never disheartened by her circumstances, has been encouraged all along by her teachers who are proud of her accomplishment.

Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif invited Nargis and her family to CM house in Lahore on Wednesday, where he congratulated the girl on her outstanding achievement in the matriculation exam and awarded her a cash amount of Rs 500,000 and a laptop.

CM Shahbaz Sharif announced on the occasion that the Punjab government will bear all educational expenses of Nargis. He also said that the provincial government will provide a house to her family in Lahore or Chakwal, wherever they want.

Although Nargis is already enrolled in FSc, she has not been able to start her studies because of delays from NADRA which has not yet issued her a B-Form. The institution does not have clear guidelines on citizenship policies for residents of slums.

Where does Karachi?s garbage go?

KARACHI: There has to be a reason for garbage dumps that ply the streets of this megalopolis.

Geo News investigated. Companies operating landfill sites in the city have refused to take more garbage over non-payment of dues by the government.

Garbage in Karachi ends up at two landfill sites: Gond Pass and Jam Chakro.

The city produces over 12000 tonnes of garbage every day. Of this only 4000 tonnes ends up at landfill sites. The rest of it is burned at empty plots, grounds, parks and roadsides.

The city's municipal authority Karachi Metropolitan Corporation officials understand the problem but lament lack of resources. “We face acute shortage of funds. How can we pay Rs200 million to these landfill site?” an official at KMC said.

The official added that KMC has already written a letter to the Sindh Government demanding payment of dues.

The newly appointed Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah had given a three-day deadline to KMC workers to clean the city of garbage dumps.

The first deadline expired today but garbage still plies the streets.

Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah on Tuesday night visited various areas of Karachi where he reprimanded officials after witnessing garbage and rainwater accumulated on roads.

He warned officials of dismissal from their jobs in case they didn't start discharging their duties properly.

Unless a proper system of garbage disposal and recycling is put in place it seems that garbage in Karachi is here to stay, not-for-profit organizations like Shehri claim.
