Funeral prayers of Hanif Mohammad to be offered today

KARACHI: The funeral prayers of legendary Pakistani cricket player Hanif Mohammad will be held today in Karachi after Friday prayers.

The former Test cricketer and also player of the world's longest Test innings, had lost a prolonged battle with cancer on Thursday.

The legendary cricketer had been facing health complications and undergoing treatment for lung cancer, doctors at the Aga Khan hospital had informed.

The cricket legend, nicknamed "Little Master" played the longest innings in Test history â€" his 970-minute 337 against West Indies in Bridgetown in 1957-58. The knock was followed a year later with the highest first-class innings to that point, 499 run out.

Hanif was known for his defensive batting but could attack when the situation called for it, and many claim he is the originator of the reverse-sweep.

The 81-year-old was famous for his dogged batting in Pakistan's nascent years in international cricket, having opened as a schoolboy for the country´s first Test against India in Delhi in 1952.

In January 2009, Hanif was named along with two other Pakistani players â€" Imran Khan and Javed Miandad â€" among the inaugural batch of 55 inductees into the ICC’s Hall of Fame.

Phelps wins 200m individual medley for 22nd gold

RIO: Michael Phelps seized another slice of Olympic history Thursday with a dominant victory in the 200m individual medley at the Rio Games, his fourth straight in the event.

Phelps joined discus thrower Al Oerter and Carl Lewis in the long jump as the only Olympians to win the same individual event at four straight Games.

He took his total of Olympic golds to 22 -- with a crack at two more in Rio in Friday´s 100m butterfly and the 4x100 medley relay on Saturday.

For fans who tune into swimming only when the Olympics roll around, Phelps´s longtime coach Bob Bowman had a message: Phelps may make it look easy, but it isn't.

"You just have no idea how difficult it is for anybody to win an Olympic gold medal," Bowman said.

"Michael has done it so frequently it really is hard to put it into perspective because every one of those was hard.

"Look at his numbers compared to everybody else. It´s not because of the talent it's because of the work. It's a combination, but work is the thing that did it -- particularly this time around."

At 31, and with a bevy of younger swimmers eager to claim a victory over a hero, Phelps´ prospects in Rio were unclear. Medals certainly, probably at least one gold.

Now he seems capable of sweeping all six of his events.

"I don´t know if I'm in better shape than I was in 2008," Phelps said of his fitness now compared to the year he won eight gold medals in eight events in Beijing.
He said his 200m medley final, closely followed by a 100m butterfly semi-final in which he secured his spot in the final with the fifth-fastest time "hurt a lot".

Lurking in second until the end of the breaststroke third leg of the medley he surged home on the closing freestyle lap to win in 1min 54.66sec.

That was almost two seconds in front of silver medallist Kosuke Hagino of Japan, the 400m individual medley champion who powered from fifth at the final wall to touch in 1:56.61.

China´s Wang Shun was third in 1:57.05.

Phelps´ old foe Ryan Lochte led at the halfway point, but the world record-holder in the event couldn´t keep up and finished fifth.

Brazilian contender Thiago Pereira, buoyed by an ecstatic crowd, led after the opening butterfly lap and was equal second at the halfway point, but faded to finish seventh.

The 32-year-old Lochte, who said he would take a break from swimming now as he ponders his future, said he would have liked to have put up more of a challenge.

But he savored what was billed as his final duel with Phelps.

"Going against him is a dream come true," Lochte said. "He´s one of the best, not swimmer ever, best athlete in the Olympics."

Kashmiri doctors stage protest against indiscriminate pellet firing by Indian forces

SRINAGAR: Doctors at Shri Maharaja Hari Singh hospital staged a protest against the indiscriminate use of pellet guns in the occupied Kashmir.

Posing as pellet victims with one eye bandaged doctors and faculty members gathered at the Government Medical College Srinagar campus to stage a demonstration.

Doctors held placards with ?Hear our silence, see our blindness? and ?Stop killing innocent kids?.

?We, as a part of this society, are equally pained by the situation. Kashmir has witnessed havoc caused by the use of pellet guns,? said Dr Sajad Majid Qazi, General Secretary of Medical Faculty Association (MFA) of GMC Srinagar and Dental College Srinagar, the Indian Express reported.

Doctors claim to have treated 365 pellet victims since July 8. They have performed 428 eye surgeries in the hospital.

Dr Muhammad Salim Khan, one of the protesters said that never before had the hospital witnessed a rush of patients with pellet injuries in their eyes.

?It is a heart-rending situation. This injury not only affects these patients physically, but also leaves scars on their psyche. This will have long term ramifications in their lives,? Khan said, speaking to the Indian Express.

Protests in occupied Kashmir have erupted over the killing of Burhan Wani, a 22-year-old commander of Hizbul Mujahideen on July 9. Indian security forces have resorted to firing pellets to disperse protesters injuring over 3500, and rendering some blind.

Four dead as string of blasts hit Thai tourist resorts

Hua Hin: A string of bomb attacks targeting Thailand´s crucial tourism industry have killed four people, authorities said Friday, sending authorities scrambling to identify a motive and find the perpetrators.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha called for calm and said he did not know who was behind the attacks.

Twin bombs exploded in the upscale resort of Hua Hin late Thursday, killing one woman and wounding more than 20 others, including nine foreign tourists, and were followed by two more on Friday morning that killed another person.

AFP journalists saw injured and bleeding people lying on the pavements shortly after the latest explosions, as emergency workers rushed to the scene and took them away in ambulances.

A further two blasts struck Friday at Patong Beach on the popular tourist island of Phuket, while two more bombs were reported in the southern towns of Trang and Surat Thani, in each of which one person was killed.

"The bombs are an attempt to create chaos and confusion," Prayut told reporters. "We should not make people panic more."

"Why have the bombs occurred as our country is heading towards stability, a better economy and tourism -- and who did it? You have to find out," he added.

The two bombs that went off in Hua Hin on Thursday were hidden in potted plants and went off within 30 minutes of each other in the bar district of the popular beach town.

While small bombings are common in the kingdom during periods of heightened political tension, there have been few such incidents in the past year and it is rare for tourists to be targeted.

Britain and Australia reacted by advising their nationals to avoid public places.

Hua Hin is home to the Klai Kangwon (Far From Worries) summer palace of Thailand´s revered royal family, and the firsts blasts came on the eve of Queen Sirikit´s 84th birthday and just ahead of the first anniversary of a Bangkok shrine bombing that killed 20.

Hua Hin´s district chief, Sutthipong Klai-udom, told AFP that the first bombs were detonated by mobile phone. Staff at local hospitals said German, Italian, Dutch and Austrian nationals were among the wounded.

"It was very shocking. There was a loud noise and police were running everywhere, it was terrible," said Michael Edwards, an Australian tourist staying in a guest house close to where the second bomb detonated.

"I was just surprised that it happened here... now I´m thinking if it´s worth staying," he told AFP.

Record tourism

Hua Hin is an upscale resort town about 200 kilometres (125 miles) south of Bangkok, popular with both local and foreign tourists.

The palace there has for years been favoured by King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world´s longest reigning monarch.

The 88-year-old is currently hospitalised in Bangkok for a number of health issues, a source of anxiety for many Thais and a key factor in the kingdom´s past decade of political turmoil.

Paul Chambers, an expert on the Thai military, said rebels from the south were prime suspects in the blasts.

"The culprits are most likely insurgent groups fighting the Thai state in the deep south," he said.

"The attack on Hua Hin seems like a direct affront at the Kingdom of Thailand. Hua Hin is home to a royal palace... also, the bombing comes on the queen´s birthday."
Zachary Abuza, an expert on Southeast Asian militant groups, said that although the southern insurgents had not carried out coordinated attacks for years, "it´s not that they haven´t or couldn´t, it´s just been a while".

"Whoever has perpetrated these wants to do serious damage to the Thai economy. That is where the junta is the most vulnerable."

Thailand´s military rulers, who seized power in 2014 after a decade of at times violent political unrest, have touted an increase in stability in the kingdom as a major accomplishment of its rule.

The junta on Sunday saw its new version of the constitution approved in a referendum, although the three insurgency-hit provinces rejected the controversial statute.

´Land of Smiles´

Thailand´s reputation as the "Land of Smiles" has suffered in recent years from political unrest and a number of high-profile crimes against foreigners.
But tourists continue to flock to its white, sandy beaches and Buddhist temples.

The kingdom is expecting a record 32 million visitors in 2016, with the tourism industry a bright spot in an otherwise lacklustre economy.

The latest blasts came just days before the first anniversary of the last major attack on tourists in Thailand -- an August 17 bomb that killed 20 people, mostly ethnic Chinese tourists.

That blast ripped through a crowded Hindu shrine in the heart of Bangkok and stunned the kingdom as the deadliest assault in recent history.
Two Uighur men from western China have been accused of the attack and are due to go on trial later this month. Both have denied any involvement.

Action against banned outfits planned

ISLAMABAD: A high-level meeting presided over by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif decided to resolutely move against proscribed organisations, which keep floating under changed names, it is reliably learnt.

“Because of the planned action, the phenomenon of outlawed outfits, regardless of the names under which they are operating, will evaporate,” a credible source that did not want to be named told The News, citing these deliberations, which spanned ten hours over the past two days.

He said that the agencies have the precise information that some banned outfits were still engaged in illegal activities under different nomenclatures. “When evidence is available, it will not be difficult to proceed against them in a result-oriented manner.”

The source said this was a long-awaited action under the counterterrorism National Action Plan (NAP) and a decision was called for, which has now been taken. “There will be no dilly-dallying whatsoever from now on.”

He said that the prime minister will preside over another similar meeting, to be also attended by top military leadership, early next week in which ‘tasking’ will be done to different arms. The areas will be allocated in which they will operate, he said.

The source said that the task force will comprise representatives of the interior ministry, all premier civilian and military intelligence agencies, police and provincial home departments to monitor the progress in the implementation of the NAP.

He said that at least once in a month, the prime minister will chair the meetings of the task force to review the progress made and will issue necessary directions when required.

The source expected that since the representatives of all the key agencies, which were engaged in the anti-terrorism fight, were part of the task force, there would be much more coordination among the intelligence agencies that has been lacking especially between civilian and military outfits.

Already, he said, there is no problem of coordination between the civilian agency, the Intelligence Bureau, and provincial police particularly the Counter Terrorism Departments of the provinces.

“The operations would now be on a fast track under the NAP,” the source said and added that the Quetta carnage infused urgency in all the relevant quarters. He was of the view that everyone agreed that the campaign must be intensified.

He said that all aspects of the NAP came under discussion in the lengthy meetings. It was decided to elaborately move in the areas where action is immediately needed, he said. “The loopholes will now be plugged completely.”

The source said that the task force would frequently meet to deliberate upon the activities being undertaken across Pakistan against terrorists.

He said that provincial governments would be fully involved in these actions because it was difficult to achieve the desired success without their absolute cooperation and association.

The source said that high-level intensive discussions, attended by the chiefs of all key intelligence agencies and presided by the prime minister, were required since long to review flaws and shortcomings in the implementation of the NAP.

He said a proactive approach would be visible in various fields in the days to come for strict implementation of the NAP. However, he said there were no quick fixes and the fight against terrorists was a long haul to be continued with vigour and force at the time.

Saudi trial opens over Makkah crane collapse

RIYADH: A trial is underway for 14 people over a deadly crane incident in Saudi Arabia that killed more than 100 people at Islam´s holiest site, local media reported Thursday.

They are accused of "negligence leading to death, damaging public property and ignoring safety guidelines" at the site of the crane collapse in September 2015, according to the Okaz and Saudi Gazette newspapers.

The defendants include at least one Saudi "billionaire" and nationals from Pakistan, The Philippines, Canada, and several Arab countries, the papers said.

The tragedy at the Grand Mosque in the Saudi holy city of Makkah killed at least 108 people and injured about 400, including foreigners who had arrived ahead of the annual Hajj pilgrimage which began later that month.

During severe winds a construction crane toppled into a courtyard of the Grand Mosque. It was one of several cranes the Saudi Binladin Group had employed as part of a multi-billion-dollar expansion to accommodate increasing numbers of faithful.

Saudi King Salman sanctioned the Binladin Group after he reviewed an investigative committee´s findings that the firm was "in part responsible" for the crane collapse.

The accused denied the charges against them, insisting the crane collapse was caused by inclement weather.

The criminal court in Jeddah, where the trial began Wednesday, ordered a new session for next month to allow the defence to respond.

Last year´s Hajj was hit by a second tragedy a week after the crane incident, when around 2,300 foreign pilgrims were killed during a stampede.

Police claim arrest of suspect behind Rawalpindi knife attacks

RAWALPINDI: Police on Thursday night claimed to have apprehended the suspect behind knife attacks on women in Rawalpindi that have terrorised the masses in the last six months.

Officials said the suspect was arrested following release of a sketch made with the help of eyewitnesses of the knife attacks on women in Rawalpindi's Morgah area.

The suspect was said to be a resident of a suburban town of Kahuta. Police say they would now get him identified by the victims of the attacks.

Earlier, police rounded up a number of people suspected to be the part of a knife-wielding group targeting women in the city.

The mysterious knife-wielding group, which attacks only women after dark, has so far stabbed 32 women since February, of whom one died while others were wounded.

In the latest attack, a nurse was stabbed to death and two others injured on Sunday night. The wounded nurse, in her statement, said that she had been returning from Saddar area after shopping along with her fellow nurse when they were attacked near Defence Chowk.

She was walking ahead of her friend when she heard a scream. The nurse said she was also attacked the moment she turned to look back.

Her friend, Anum Naz, had later succumbed to her wounds.

Police suspect the involvement of one or two men in the attacks that spread terror in the vicinity and forced women to stay at homes.

What has residents as well as authorities perplexed is the fact that the attackers make no demands and do not discriminate. They target women after dark irrespective of age, attire and appearance.

All of the attacks took place under the jurisdiction of Morgah police station, which includes Kot Kalian and Rabia Bungalows.

Around 25 women were injured with a knife-like object in the first three weeks of February this year.

Six months later, four women were attacked.

Panic gripped the residents once again after Sunday’s renewed attacks and subsequent death of a nurse.

Poll finds Trump's worst offense: mocking a disabled reporter

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, who has been making headlines for his offensive remarks, has drawn the ire of most of the Americans by insulting a disabled reporter, shows a poll result.

Likely voters, when asked in a recent Bloomberg poll what bothered them most about Trump, chose one action above all: When the presidential runner mocked a reporter with a disability last November.

Trump, at a rally, had imitated New York Times reporter, Serge Kovaleski, who suffers from a congenital joint condition.

He had singled out Kovaleski for a story he wrote a few days after the 9/11 attacks, while he was then a Washington Post correspondent, to back up widely disputed claims that "thousands" of Muslims in New Jersey celebrated the attacks.

That article stated authorities had detained "a number of people who were allegedly seen celebrating the attacks and holding tailgate-style parties on rooftops while they watched the devastation on the other side of the river". Those accounts have never been authenticated.

The New York Times had called Trump's actions "outrageous".

Democrats have made sure the public has seen and heard about Trump's extended riff over and over again as it has been played in ads created by the Clinton campaign and groups working on her behalf.

Former US president and Hillary's husband, Bill Clinton even said in his convention speech that his wife "never made fun of people with disabilities. She tried to empower them based on their ability."

Trump, although, denied that he meant to mock the reporter. Of late, he said, "I didn't know what he looked like. I didn't know he was disabled."

The poll was conducted before Donald Trump ignited firestorm with a comment about "Second Amendment people", which many interpreted as a veiled suggestion of violence against his Democratic rival Clinton.

It showed Clinton enjoying a 6-point lead over Donald Trump in a two-way contest among likely voters.

More than six in 10 say they are bothered a lot that Trump mocked a reporter?s physical disability, the highest level of displeasure among the issues challenging Trump that were tested.

More than half of likely voters, 56 percent, say they were bothered a lot by Trump?s criticisms of the soldier?s parents.

Many say they were bothered a lot that he said he alone can fix the nation's problems, while others denounce his suggestion that Russian hackers try to find Clinton?s deleted e-mails.

Anti-Corruption team raids Karachi Inter Board, claims result tampering

KARACHI: Officials of the Anti-Corruption Department on Thursday raided Board of Intermediate Education Karachi prompting a protest by employees against the action.

The raid prompted employees and workers to protest, who quit work and locked up their offices. Officials claimed to have found evidences of result tampering.

"We have, so far, found 102 cases in which the results were tampered, along with evidences," said Ghulam Qadir Thebo, chairman of Anti-Corruption Department.

The administration of Inter Board rejected the allegations as baseless.

The raid, however, jeopardized the future of thousands of students of the pre-medical group, whose results might possibly be delayed in the wake of investigations.

Bombs in Thai resort kill one, injure 9, including foreigners: police

BANGKOK: Two bombs exploded in the Thai seaside resort of Hua Hin on Thursday, killing one woman and injuring 10 people, Thai police said.

The explosions happened ahead of a public holiday on Friday to mark the birthday of Queen Sirikit. Hua Hin is a popular upscale Thai resort south of Bangkok and many people will have gone there for the holiday weekend.

The second bomb exploded near a bar at about 10:20 p.m. (1320 GMT), killing a Thai woman and injuring eight foreigners and one other Thai person, local deputy police chief Samer Yousamran said.

The injured are being treated at a local hospital, he said.

The first bomb went off about twenty minutes earlier about 50 meters (yards) away from the second bomb, he said. Nobody was injured in the first explosion.

Police are investigating and as yet do not know the motive or the identity of the bombers, he said.

In a separate incident earlier on Thursday, a bomb exploded at a market in the southern Trang province in Thailand, injuring six people, police said.

Police believe that explosion was related to a local dispute.

Thais voted less than a week ago in a referendum to adopt a military-backed constitution, the first test of Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha at the ballot box since he seized power in a coup in May 2014.

Thailand's 88 year-old King Bhumibol Adulayadej, the world's longest reigning monarch, and his wife Sirikit are in hospital in Bangkok but have resided in recent years in Hua Hin at the Klai Kangwon Palace royal palace, which translates as "Far from Worries Palace".

King Bhumibol has received treatment for an infection over the past month in a Bangkok hospital, the Royal Household Bureau said on Aug. 1.

Canada police shoot dead alleged Daesh sympathizer

OTTAWA: Canadian police said they thwarted a "potential terrorist threat" after shooting dead an alleged Islamic State (Daesh) sympathiser said to have been armed with an explosive device.

Media reports said 24-year-old Aaron Driver was shot to death Wednesday night during a police raid on a home in Strathroy, Ontario, 220 kilometres (135 miles) southwest of Toronto, where he lived with his sister.

Driver?s father confirmed that his son had been shot and killed, telling the National Post "the police did what they had to do. He would not surrender. I?m sure they gave him ample chances."

"As sad and shocked as I am, it doesn?t surprise me that it has come to this. Aaron was a good kid who went down a dark path and couldn?t find the light again," the father, who was not named, was quoted as saying.

A relative told Canadian public broadcaster CBC that police informed the family that he was shot dead after detonating an explosive device, injuring himself and one other person.

They said they had to shoot Driver because he had a second device which he was planning to detonate, according to the CBC.

The other injured person was reported to be a taxi driver, but it was unclear what his connection was to the suspect.

Broadcaster CTV, citing internal government documents, said the suspect allegedly had been planning to set off an explosive device in a packed public space in a major city.

"Earlier today, the RCMP received credible information of a potential terrorist threat. A suspect was identified and the proper course of action has been taken to ensure that there is no danger to the public?s safety," the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said in a statement.

Hours earlier, authorities had alerted Toronto?s transit system of a "credible terrorist threat," Brad Ross, a spokesman for the Toronto Transit Commission, told CTV Thursday.

Police have beefed up their presence on the network of subways, bus lines and street cars in Canada?s largest city, used by 1.8 million people a day.

Canadian authorities had issued a public warning late Wednesday of a "potential terrorist threat," and said a suspect had been arrested but provided no details.

?A lone wolf?

Driver was described in media reports as a Muslim convert with a troubled childhood who became radicalised on the internet.

"It was like he turned out the lights and put a ?Do Not Disturb? sign on the door," his father told CBC in interviews last year with his son.

"When he was living at home, he was very secretive; a lone wolf. He didn?t bring friends over, never talked about where he was going and what he was doing," the father said.

Driver came to the attention of Canadian authorities in 2014 after posting tweets in support of the Islamic State group (Daesh) and justifying a Muslim convert?s killing of a sentry at Canada?s national war memorial during an October 2014 attack that spilled into the nearby parliament building.

"If a country goes to war with another country or another people or another community, I think that they have to be prepared for things like" the Ottawa attack, he told the CBC in last year?s interview.

"And when it does happen they shouldn?t -- they shouldn?t act surprised. They had it coming to them; they deserved it."

He was arrested in June 2015 and released under court supervision.

He was ordered to undergo counselling from a religious leader, wear an electronic monitoring bracelet and stay off the internet. Those restrictions were gradually loosened and were scheduled to expire this month.

According to the order, a peace bond which was signed in February, there were "reasonable grounds to fear that he may participate, contribute directly or indirectly in the activity of a terrorist group," the Canadian Press news agency said.

 Unfolding probe

The RCMP said an investigation was under way as the matter "continues to unfold." No other details from officials were immediately available. A press conference was due later Thursday.

Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said Canada?s terrorism threat level remains at "medium," a ranking which it has maintained since October 2014 after lone wolf attacks by suspected militants in Quebec and Ottawa.

In the first attack, on October 20, 2014, a 25-year-old Muslim convert ran down two soldiers in a parking lot in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, some 40 kilometres (25 miles) southeast of Montreal, before being shot dead by police. One of the soldiers later died.

Two days later, another Muslim convert, aged 32, killed a ceremonial guard then tried to storm Canada?s parliament before being shot dead by security guards only meters (yards) from a room where the prime minister and his caucus were meeting.

The Conservative government responded by passing a bill that gives the RCMP and Canada?s spy agency sweeping powers to thwart terror plots and prevent Canadian youth from flying overseas to join IS (Daesh) militants in Syria.

Canada joined the US-led coalition against IS in September 2014.

After unseating the Tories in an election last year, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau scaled back Canada?s participation in the coalition, ordering the withdrawal of Canadian fighter jets but increasing the number of military trainers in Iraq.

Afghan President calls PM Nawaz, condemns Quetta tragedy

Authorities in Kuwait seize 1.5 million tablets of controlled substance

MANAMA: Kuwaiti authorities seized a large shipment of amphetamine tablets as they arrived from Ukraine into the northern Arabian Gulf state.

According to media reports, 1.5 million pills of the controlled drug Captagon valued at KD3 million ($9.94 million) were stashed inside two containers carrying hardwood charcoal.

A Syrian and a Saudi national have been apprehended and will face legal action according to Kuwait?s Ministry of Interior.

Both individuals have admitted to their crime.

The drugs according to the detained Saudi national, were meant to be stored in Kuwait and later smuggled into Saudi Arabia.

Crew of Punjab govt helicopter recovered from Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD: The crew of a Punjab government helicopter which made an emergency landing in eastern Afghanistan has been recovered, sources told Geo News on Thursday.

Pakistan, England teams observe minute of silence for Quetta attack victims

LONDON: The Pakistan and England cricket teams wore black arm bands and observed a minute of silence for the victims of Quetta Attack as they geared up to play the fourth and final test match at Oval on Thursday.

On Monday a suicide blast at the Quetta Civil Hospital killed 74 people and injured over 112. The explosion took place when Balochistan Bar Association President Bilal Kasi's body was being brought to the emergency department. He was gunned down at Mano Jan Road earlier. Former Balochistan Bar President Baz Muhammad Kakar was injured in the attack. He later succumbed to his wounds at the hospital.

Most of the victims of the bomb blast were lawyers, with some reports claiming that an entire generation of lawyers was wiped out in the bloody attack.

Lawyers all over Pakistan announced a week of mourning boycotting duties and staging demonstrations. The Supreme Court Bar President Ali Zafar in various press statements demanded that the state had failed to protect the lives of lawyers who received threats regularly.

England wins toss, bats first

England won the toss and decided to bat against. Pakistan are without Rahat Ali, who will sit out the Test over injury concerns. Fast bowler Wahab Riaz will replace him.

Pakistan also decided to drop opener Mohammad Hafeez, who had failed to perform with the bat so far in the series. Debutante Iftikhar Ahmed will play the first Test of his career today in his place.

Skipper Misbah-ul-Haq said after the toss that his side would have chosen to bat against England had they won the toss instead.

The pitch would help spinners later in the day, he said.

England are unchanged heading into the Test.

Pakistan have already lost two back-to-back Test matches against England at Old Trafford and Edgbaston while Pakistan drew first blood when they beat the hosts by 75 runs at Lords in the very first match of the series.

England beat Pakistan comprehensively in the last two Test matches, at Edgbaston by 143 runs and at Old Trafford by 330 runs

Pakistan have not won a Test series on the English soil since the past 20 years. Outside Asia, the last time Pakistan clinched a Test series was against New Zealand six years ago. According to Misbah-ul-Haq, if Pakistan are to level the series, then they must play extraordinary cricket.

Legendary cricketer Hanif Mohammad passes away

KARACHI: Former Test cricketer Hanif Mohammad passed away on Thursday after prolonged illness.

The cricketer had already been facing health complications and undergoing treatment for cancer.

It was reported that Hanif had breathing problems, owing to which he was shifted to a ventilator two days ago.

The cricket legend, nicknamed "Little Master" played the longest innings in Test history - his 970-minute 337 against West Indies in Bridgetown in 1957-58. The knock was followed a year later with the highest first-class innings to that point, 499 run out.

Hanif was known for his defensive batting but could attack when the situation called for it, and many claim he is the originator of the reverse-sweep.

Hanif represented Pakistan in 55 Tests, scoring 3,915 runs at an average of 43.98. He still holds the record for highest score (337) in an innings by a Pakistani batsman followed by Inzamamul Haq (329) and Younus Khan (313). The veteran was also named as Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1968.

Tennis: Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza call it quits on doubles partnership

The leading women?s doubles team of Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza have opted to end their partnership after suffering a slump in form following a trophy-laden 16 months together, the players confirmed on Thursday.

"After three grand slam victories and 11 WTA doubles titles together, we have mutually agreed that we would each be open to playing with other players for the remainder of the season," the pair said in a statement.

A former singles number one, Swiss Hingis partnered Indian Mirza for the first time at the Indian Wells Open last year and the self-styled "Santina" team went on to claim 14 titles, including wins at Wimbledon, and the U.S. and Australian Opens.

Since their 41-match winning streak was snapped at the Qatar Open in February, the pair claimed the Rome title but failed to advance beyond the quarter-finals in their last four events.

"Perhaps, because of our great past results, we have had very high expectations from our partnership and unfortunately did not get the results we desired recently," they added.

The pair will, however, reunite to defend their WTA Finals title in Singapore at the end of October.

The military operation Zarb-i-Azb that commenced in 2014 approximately displaced internally around one million people from Pakistan's North Waziristan, although most of the IDPs were able to return home by June 2015, the report said.

The study presents a dire state of civilian casualties, stating that almost 22,100 civilians died while 40,792 were injured as a result of the war.

The study puts the number of militants and Taliban deaths at around 31,000.

The military and Pakistani security forces personnel deaths were said to be 8,214.

The most astounding revelation in the study, which is based at Brown University?s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, maintains that violence is not plummeting.

The research focuses on the pattern of violence and killings in the Af-Pak conflict zone and primarily took into consideration the trend in the recent years.

The intensity of bloodshed showed variations over time, however, the report found a raise in violence in the first half of 2016 in Pakistan.

Neta C. Crawford, author of the study and professor of political science at Boston University said that the hike in the intensity of war-related violence in Afghanistan ?could have a ?spillover ?effect in Pakistan.?

The research points out that the Afghan government control only 70 percent of the country. Six percent of Afghanistan is directly controlled by the Taliban and 23 percent of the territory is contested.

The research is a part of the updates of the costs of the post-9/11 wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan, launched under Brown University in 2011. The team carrying out the research and analysing data consists of human rights practitioners, physicians, legal experts and scholars.
