Hillary Clinton must give written testimony in e-mail case, says US judge

WASHINGTON: A federal judge has ruled that Democrat Hillary Clinton must respond in writing in a lawsuit over her use of a private e-mail server while she was secretary of state.

In a two-page ruling issued on Friday, Judge Emmet Sullivan declined to order Clinton to testify in person in a case brought by the conservative group Judicial Watch.

The Democratic presidential candidate has 30 days to respond to Judicial Watch´s questions over her use of an unauthorized server while she was the top US diplomat, the ruling reads.

In early July, US Attorney General Loretta Lynch said no charges would be brought against Clinton for using the private email server.

FBI Director James Comey however said that while there was no clear evidence that Clinton and her aides intended to violate secrecy laws, "there is information that they were extremely careless in their handling of very sensitive, highly-classified information."

Clinton has apologized for exclusively using the private email account and her own server during her time as secretary of state from 2009 to 2013.

Opponents argue that this breached rules about protecting classified documents from cyber attack and may have amounted to a crime.

The Judicial Watch lawsuit threatens to keep the e-mail controversy alive for the weeks leading up to the November 8 presidential election.

198 terrorists arrested in Punjab combing operation

LAHORE: Security forces arrested 198 terrorists in combing operation in Punjab from December 2014 to August 11, 2016, according to police records, Geo News reported.

Police nabbed 198 terrorists belonging to banned organizations from different cities across Punjab during the period, records showed.

Nine al-Qaeda terrorists were arrested, of whom five were caught in Lahore and four in D.G. Khan. 13 of the arrested terrorists belonged to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan.

176 of the terrorists caught were from Lashkar-e-Jahngvi, the most from any organization. 94 of these were arrested in Bahawalpur.

No terrorist from Daesh was arrested in Punjab, police said.

The ISPR had said earlier this month that combing operations will be conducted till terrorists are arrested and their hideouts eliminated.

Following the deadly attack at Quetta's Civil Hospital, Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif had ordered special combing operations, authorising intelligence agencies to go anywhere in the country and target those linked with the terror acts.

McGregor gets revenge with decision win over Diaz at UFC 202

LAS VEGAS: Irish mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor won a thrilling decision victory over Nate Diaz in their rematch at the Ultimate Fighting Championship´s UFC 202 event in Las Vegas on Saturday.

Featherweight champion McGregor had stepped up two weight classes to fight Diaz at welterweight in March but was sumbitted by the Californian in the second round.

On Saturday at the T-Mobile Arena both fighters did heavy damage but neither could find the knockout blow over five bloody rounds.

Judges gave McGregor a majority decision victory, setting the stage for a third fight.

McGregor downed Diaz early in the first round with a stinging left hand and fought a tactical fight, peppering his opponent´s front leg with kicks.

Diaz hit the deck twice early in the second round but McGregor declined to take the fight to the mat, signalling for Diaz to get up.

Known for his durability, Diaz then landed two telling strikes of his own, forcing McGregor back against the cage towards the end of the round and grabbing the momentum.

Diaz came close to finishing it in the third but McGregor somehow stayed on his feet despite a series of heavy blows.

Both fighters were struggling with fatigue in the final two rounds, which were heavy on clinches around the cage, and Diaz managed to take McGregor down in the final seconds of the fifth.

The flamboyant McGregor is the biggest draw in the UFC, as shown by his $3 million paycheck for Saturday´s fight.

While a third fight between the two would be a huge draw, the UFC is keen for McGregor to defend the featherweight title he won by beating Jose Aldo last December or to vacate it.

In Satruday´s co-main event, top light heavyweight contender Anthony Johnson knocked out Glover Teixeira with a thundering right uppercut to put himself into contention for a title fight against champion Daniel Cormier.

Steyn strikes twice before rain ends play

DURBAN: Dale Steyn, playing in his first Test match in more than eight months, struck two early blows for South Africa before rain prevented any play after lunch on the second day of the first Test against New Zealand at Kingsmead on Saturday.

New Zealand were 15 for two, 248 runs behind South Africa´s first innings total of 263, when play ended for the day.

Steyn, who had failed to complete the only two Tests he had played in South Africa´s last eight matches because of groin and shoulder injuries, had Tom Latham caught at first slip by Hashim Amla for four off the second ball of his fourth over.

Bowling in helpful, heavily overcast conditions, he followed up in his next over with a full in-swinger which trapped Martin Guptill leg before wicket for seven.

Steyn took two wickets for three runs in six overs.

Latham added only one run after being dropped off Vernon Philander, also returning from injury.

Guptill survived an appeal for leg before wicket off Steyn´s fourth ball of the innings when he was on two.

Umpire Richard Illingworth turned down the appeal and South Africa decided not to ask for a review. Replays showed the ball was clipping leg stump in the ´umpire´s call´ area so a review would have failed.

Three overs later Latham edged Philander low to second slip where Dean Elgar spilled a relatively straightforward chance.

Although Steyn had the better figures, Philander also looked close to his best form after missing South Africa´s most recent seven Test matches because of an ankle injury.

In the last over before lunch he twice beat Ross Taylor with balls that swung sharply away from the bat.

It took New Zealand ten overs to take South Africa´s remaining two wickets after rain delayed the start by 50 minutes.

Tim Southee struck with the eighth ball of the day when he bowled Steyn before South Africa had added to their overnight total of 236 for eight.

Kagiso Rabada and Dane Piedt added 27 runs for the last wicket despite New Zealand taking the second new ball, which enabled Southee and Trent Boult to gain extravagant movement in the overcast conditions.

Rabada, who was dropped by Southee at third slip off Boult when he had 16, battled his way to an unbeaten 32 before Piedt was last man out, caught behind off Boult for nine.

Boult finished with figures of three for 52.

Selfie turns deadly: Two more drown in River Kunhar

MANSEHRA: A man fell into River Kunhar and drowned while trying to take a selfie and his cousin also drowned in an attempt to save him in Balakot on Saturday, Geo News reported.

The man, named Sohail, was posing for a selfie beside River Kunhar when he slipped and fell into the river. His cousin, a woman, tried to save him but also drowned. Both were residents of Multan.

The incident is the latest in a string of ?selfie deaths? that have occurred with the rise of smartphones. Earlier this week, a girl drowned after falling into River Kunhar while attempting to take a selfie. Her parents, who tried to save her, also drowned, officials said.

River Kunhar flows through Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, at a hilly tourist spot in Beesian village, some 200 kilometres (120 miles) north of Islamabad.

The deep, rocky and fast-flowing river is popular for white-water rafting.

On July 5, Peruvian police recovered the body of a South Korean tourist under a waterfall in the Amazon jungle, days after he fell in while taking a photo of himself.

A week earlier a 51-year-old German tourist plunged 200 metres (650 feet) to his death while posing for a photo on a mountainside at Peru?s top archaeological site, Machu Picchu.

Russian shot putter stripped of silver medal for doping

RIO DE JANEIRO: The International Olympic Committee on Saturday stripped Russia?s Yevgeniya Kolodko of her London 2012 Games shot put silver medal for doping ? the second medalist from the contest to be disqualified.

Kolodko adds to a growing list of medal winners caught out in new tests on samples taken in London and at the 2008 Beijing Games.

The IOC said a new test on Kolodko?s doping sample had found two banned substances ? the turinabol and the growth hormone ipamorelin.

Kolodko finished third but moved up to the silver medal one week after the competition when the winner Nadzeya Ostapchuk of Belarus was revealed to have failed a test.

Valerie Adams of New Zealand, who originally came second, is now the gold medal winner. Gong Lijiao of China who originally finished fourth should now get the silver.

The IOC ordered the Russian Olympic Committee to "secure the return to the IOC, as soon as possible, of the medal, the medallist pin and the diploma" given to Kolodko.

Following accusations of ?state-sponsored? doping made against Russia by Canadian lawyer Richard McLaren in an investigation for the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), the IOC ordered new tests on hundreds of samples stored since the Beijing and London Games.

It later announced that 98 new failed tests had been uncovered.

Russia has strongly denied any government role in doping, even as the sanctions list grows.

The Russian 4x100m women?s relay team have lost their Beijing gold medal and the 4x400m team their silver because of failures.

Yulia Chermoshanskaya from the 4x100m failed a doping re-test along with Anastasia Kapachinskaya from the 4x400m.

In each case banned steroids were found.

Russia has been suspended from the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) because of the doping scandal.

With a world athletics championships to be held in London next August, IAAF president Sebastian Coe told AFP on Friday there is "no timeframe" for Russia?s return to international competition.

Only one Russian, Darya Klishina, took part in the Rio track and field and the IAAF tried to ban her because of new doping suspicions.

Neymar makes Brazil the Olympic football kings

RIO DE JANEIRO: Neymar scored a brilliant goal and the decisive shootout penalty as Brazil buried their World Cup demons by beating Germany in the Olympic football final on Saturday.

The 5-4 penalty win was close. Neymar and his teammates all sank to their knees, many in uncontrollable tears at the centrepiece of a day of 30 gold medals in Rio.

Park In-Bee of South Korea won the first women?s Olympic golf gold for 116 years, the United States routed Spain in the women?s basketball final. Even scandal-tainted Russia won four golds while losing a silver from 2012 because of another doping case.

But Brazil came to a standstill because of Neymar and football.

Supermarket checkout clerks watched the match on their mobile phones, taxi drivers gathered around any available screen to see the Selecao take on Germany -- and seek revenge for a 7-1 humiliation by their opponents in a World Cup semi-final two years ago.

In front of 78,000 people -- the biggest crowd of the Rio Olympics -- Neymar twisted a free kick past German goalkeeper Timo Horn to give Brazil a first-half lead.

German captain Max Meyer swept home Jeremy Toljan?s cross to equalise and then taunted the Maracana stadium crowd by kissing the number seven on his shirt.

The game went through extra time and eight penalties in deadlock until Germany?s Nils Petersen missed his spot kick.

Barcelona star Neymar rifled the final penalty into the corner after a half-faint and a whole nation erupted in celebration.

Park wins

Victory may not get Brazil into the top 10 of the Olympic medals table at the end of competition on Sunday, but it was the one gold the country wanted. Street celebrations erupted after the final whistle.

Park triumphed in the first women?s Olympic golf tournament since 1900 by five strokes from New Zealand?s Lydia Ko. Victory ended doubts about a thumb injury that has forced her to miss tournaments in recent months and about her ability to handle big tournament pressure.

"I really wanted to do well this week to show people that I can still play," Park said.

Russia came to Rio under a doping scandal shadow and missing its key track and field stars. But it snared four golds -- in women?s handball and team rhythmic gymnastics and for world record-holder Alexander Lesun in modern pentathlon and Abdulrashid Sadulaev in freestyle wrestling -- to take its total to 17 golds in all and fourth place in the overall table.

The 20-year-old Sadulaev said after his 5-0 win over Turkey?s Selim Yaser that his parents had tried to stop him becoming a wrestler.

"All of my relatives were against it but as soon as I started to do well they realised it was my destiny," he said.

China?s Chen Long inflicted more Olympic heartache on Malaysia?s Lee Chong Wei with a straight games win for gold in the men?s badminton singles final.

Lee, beaten in the past two Olympic finals by Lin Dan, disposed of his Chinese nemesis in the semis in Rio but couldn?t get past Chen for a gold that would have been Malaysia?s first in any sport.

"The key here was that a Chinese man won badminton gold. It was a little bit unexpected for me but all the hard work has paid off," said Chen.

In boxing, Cuban men captured two golds -- Arlen Lopez took the middleweight title and Robeisy Ramirez claimed bantamweight.

Britain?s Nicola Adams became the first woman to retain an Olympic boxing title in the flyweight division.

The 17 days of competition end on Sunday with the United States, already on 40 golds and past 1,000 golds in their overall history, certain to top the table.

Britain with 26 golds were hoping to hold off China, just two behind.

Brazil waited to see how International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach would describe the Rio Games -- dogged by financial crisis, empty stadiums and athlete muggings (real and invented) -- at Sunday?s gala closing ceremony when Tokyo takes over the Olympic flag.

On Saturday, Bach said the Games had been "iconic".

Brazil had shown "that it is possible to organise the Olympics in countries which are not at the top of the GDP ranking," he said.

Congo virus kills 18 people in Pakistan this year

KARACHI: At least 18 people have been killed in 2016 from Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever, or Congo virus in Pakistan.

According to details, the virus has killed at least 11 people in Quetta, five in Karachi and two in Punjab province.

On Friday, a 22-year-old patient Allah Ditta died at the Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre (JPMC) in Karachi, the latest to fall to the deadly disease.

With Eid-ul-Azha almost upon us, health experts are advising the citizens to take special preventive measures to protect from carrying the virus.

According to them, healthcare workers caring for patients with suspected or confirmed Congo virus or handling specimens from them should implement standard infection control precautions.

These include basic hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment, safe injection practices and safe burial practices, Dr Wasim Khawaja a public health specialist at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) said.

He said that to reduce the risk people should wear protective clothing like long sleeves or long trousers and wear light coloured clothing to allow easy detection of ticks on the clothes.

Child kidnapping rumours spark political war of words

KARACHI: Although the provincial government has rubbished rumours of widespread child kidnappings in Karachi, the issue has sparked a fresh war of words between those in power.

When asked by reporters on Saturday about who spread the rumors, Sindh information advisor and senior Pakistan People's Party leader Maula Bux Chandio claimed the rumours were spread by "those guarding the interests of the Punjab government".

"This environment of panic and fear was intentionally created," he said.

Earlier, Karachi police chief Addiitonal Inspector-General Mushtaq Maher had also claimed that there were political interests behind spreading rumors of kidnappings of children in Karachi.

Multiple incidents of mob justice were reported from different parts of the city after the rumors, with citizens thrashing innocent people on suspicion of them being kidnappers.

But Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Talal Chaudhry responded to Chandio's allegation, saying the Sindh government should "check its own actions before hurling accusations at others".

"They try to divert attention whenever there is talk of their own performance or that they have failed to deliver," said Talal Chaudhry.

"Did the Punjab government also ruin the law and order situation in Karachi? If the federal government did not carry out the operation, the provincial government would have been unable to take control of the situation.

"Those who have even failed to clean garbage from the streets of Karachi should think before hurling allegations at others," he said.

World's longest glass bottom bridge opens in China

ZHANGJIAJIE: Tourists who suffer from vertigo need not apply. The world's highest and longest glass-bottomed bridge opened Saturday in China's spectacular Zhangjiajie mountains ? the inspiration for American blockbuster Avatar.

Some 430 metres (1,400 feet) long and suspended 300 metres above the earth, the bridge spans the canyon between two mountain cliffs in Zhangjiajie park in China´s central Hunan province.

Six metres wide and made of some 99 panels of clear glass, the bridge can carry up to 800 people at the same time, an official in Zhangjiajie -- a popular tourist destination -- told the Xinhua news agency.

Tourists can walk across the bridge, designed by Israeli architect Haim Dotan, and the more adventurous will be able to bungee jump or ride a zip line.

"I wanted to feel awe-inspired by this bridge. But I´m not afraid -- it seems safe!" Wang Min, who was visiting the new structure with her husband and children, told AFP Saturday.

Following an alarming glass bridge cracking incident at the Yuntai mountain in northern Henan in 2015, authorities in Zhangjiajie were eager to demonstrate the safety of the structure.

They organised a string of media events, including one where people were encouraged to try and smash the bridge´s glass panels with a sledge hammer, and another where they drove a car across it.

"It´s crowded today and a bit of a mess. But to be suspended 300 metres in the air, it´s a unique experience," said Lin Chenglu, who had come to see the bridge with his colleagues.

Only 8,000 people each day will be allowed to cross the bridge, Xinhua said, and tourists will have to book their tickets a day in advance, at a cost of 138 yuan ($20).

Cameras and selfie sticks are banned, and people wearing stilettos will not be allowed to walk on the bridge, Xinhua said.

Local authorities have said that one of the summits in Zhangjiajie Park inspired the floating mountain which appears in the American blockbuster Avatar.

A Hollywood photographer visited the area in 2008, taking images which were used for the film, according to media reports.

Fahad murder case: Brother in law appeals for justice

LONDON: PTI leader Imran Khan’s friend and London-based businessman Zulfi Bukhari has started a petition on social media soliciting the general public’s help to raise pressure for the arrest and punishment of his brother-in-law’s killers.

Barrister Fahad Malik husband of Zulfi Bukhari’s sister, was killed in a shooting on Monday night in Islamabad by Raja Arshad and Nauman Khokar.

The petition titled “Arrest Fahad Malik's Killers” calls on the Islamabad police to arrest the killers and questions how the killers were able to secure bail, while the police wasted opportunities to arrest them.

Barrister Fahad Malik, a British national, spent most of his life in London and did his bar at the Lincoln's Inn but decided to practice in Pakistan. His wife Sakina Bukhari and two children were in London when Barrister Fahad Malik was killed by Nauman Khokhar accomplices, after mediating between two quarreling factions at a local police station.

Fahad’s younger brother Jawad Malik was also holidaying in London at the time of the killing. Zulfi Bukhari took his sister and kids to Pakistan and Jawad Malik accompanied them. The family has vowed to fight on till justice is delivered.

In a series of messages posted on a social media site, Zulfi Bukhari wrote: “Our entire family has been ripped apart, my brother in law murdered by Nauman Khokar & Raja Arshad outside the police station #JusticeForFahad.”

He posted pictures of Fahad Malik with his son and daughter and wrote: “Fahad leaves behind 2 beautiful kids & his wife. His only crime? Mediating a conflict b/w 2 parties.”

Zulfi Bukhari posted pictures of the gangsters who opened fire on Fahad Malik outside the police station: “We can't bring Fahad back, or make sense of this killing. My sister is shattered, their children heartbroken. Plz pray for them.”

Interior Minister Chauhdary Nisar Ali Khan visited Fahad Malik’s family home and promised to bring the killers to justice but they remain at large.

“Fahad Malik's murder happened in the capital city, a few miles away from the PM house. Why are the lawmakers sleeping?”

Fahad Malik was the nephew of ex-chairman Senate Muhammad Mian Soomro and son-in-law of Syed Wajid Bukhari, who was Minister of Environment in Pervez Musharraf’s cabinet.

Play washed out again in W.Indies v India test

Rain and a soggy outfield continued to ruin the fourth test between West Indies and India in Trinidad as play was washed out without a bowl being bowled on Saturday.

It means only 22 overs have been completed in three days at the Queen´s Park Oval in Port of Spain.

The final match of the series now seems destined for a draw, with India already 2-0 up in the contest.

A draw will cost India top spot to Pakistan in the International Cricket Council rankings.

Former West Indies captain Viv Richards is among those critical of the apparent lack of modern equipment on hand to speed up the process of drying the outfield.

"Folks here have some questions to answer," he said on television commentary.

"Not having a super sopper is unacceptable.

"West Indies will eventually resume on 62 for two in their first innings, their score when play was first halted on Thursday.

US hacked NTC to spy on Pakistan military, political leadership: Snowden documents

The United States hacked into targets in the Pakistan's National Telecommunications Corporation (NTC) to spy on the country's political and military leadership, documents released by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden confirm.

According to a report by online news site The Intercept, the previously unpublished documents released by Snowden confirm that some of the NSA's top-secret code has been leaked or hacked.

The Intercept's editors include journalists that worked with Snowden to publicise his notorious 2013 NSA leak revealing the extent of government snooping on private data.

In the latest leak of top-secret documents, Snowden has given The Intercept a classified draft NSA manual on how to implant the SECONDDATE malware ? malicious code that is used to monitor or control someone else's computer, the website said.

The draft NSA manual contains instructions to NSA operators telling them to use a specific string of characters associated with the SECONDDATE malware program.

According to The New York Times, much of the code was created to peer through the computer firewalls of foreign powers. Such access would enable the NSA to plant malware in rivals' systems and monitor ? or even attack ? their networks.

Now, according to The Intercept report which sheds lights on the NSA's broader surveillance and infection network, SECONDDATE was also used to spy on Pakistan.

"There are at least two documented cases of SECONDDATE being used to successfully infect computers overseas: An April 2013 presentation boasts of successful attacks against computer systems in both Pakistan and Lebanon," said The Intercept report.

"In the first, NSA hackers used SECONDDATE to breach 'targets in Pakistan?s National Telecommunications Corporation?s (NTC) VIP Division,' which contained documents pertaining to 'the backbone of Pakistan?s Green Line communications network' used by 'civilian and military leadership'," said the report.

According to report, SECONDDATE is just one method used by the NSA to hack into target computer systems and networks.

Another document in the cache released by Snowden today describe how the NSA used software other than SECONDDATE to repeatedly attack and hack into computer systems in Pakistan.

Azhar ready for England after Ireland washout

MALAHIDE: Pakistan one-day captain Azhar Ali is happy with his side´s preparation for next week´s one-day series against England despite the second ODI against Ireland being abandoned without a ball being bowled on Saturday.

The overnight rain did not stop until an hour after the scheduled start at Malahide and although there were a few bright spots throughout the day, the rain kept returning and the umpires officially abandoned the game at 3:30pm (1430 GMT).

However, with a total of 337 for six in and a crushing 255-run victory over Ireland at Malahide in Thursday´s first of a two-game series, it will be a confident Pakistan side that head into their next game, the first of a five-game series against England, in Southampton on Wednesday.

Azhar´s only regret was that he didn't get the opportunity to accommodate the other members of his one-day squad in a second game in Ireland.

"It was a very good performance in the first ODI, we wanted to experiment with a few more things today," he explained after Saturday´s washout.

"It was another international to win and we would have loved to have played but the rain had the better of the day."

He added: "I am still very satisfied with our preparation, and although because of the rain we couldn´t get much practice in here, we have two days in Southampton and we will be ready to go for the first game against England."

The 15-man squad shows eight changes from the party which drew the recent four-match Test series in England 2-2 but Azhar is happy with the selection and he gave special mentions to spinner Imad Wasim, who took five wickets in Thursday´s ODI and Sharjeel Khan who made a memorable 152 in the same match.

"We have lot of options, especially with the all-rounders coming in, Mohammad Nawaz and Imad Wasim and if they keep performing, and if Sharjeel performs and continues his form into the England games, we are looking very good," he said.

"It looks a very balanced side and if we perform to our potential we can produce very good results. As a unit we are very confident."

Ireland´s next assignment is the fourth game in the Intercontinental Cup, against Hong Kong in Belfast, starting on August 30, when they resume their quest for Test match status.

They then head off to South Africa at the end of September for ODIs against the hosts and Australia in the space of three days.

Trump companies owe $650 million: NY Times

WASHINGTON: Companies belonging to Donald Trump have at least $650 million in debt, more than twice the amount shown in public filings made by his presidential campaign, the New York Times reported Saturday.

The paper employed a property information firm to search publicly available data on more than 30 US properties connected to the Republican candidate, including offices and golf courses.

In addition to the $650 million liabilities, "a substantial portion of his wealth is tied up in three passive partnerships that owe an additional $2 billion to a string of lenders," the Times said about debt that could significantly affect Trump´s wealth.

The billionaire tycoon campaigns on what he says is his spectacularly successful real estate record, claiming to be worth $10 billion and citing his business acumen as his major qualification for the presidency.

However, he has dismissed mounting pressure even from within his own party to disclose his tax returns or allow an independent valuation of his assets.

Trump's campaign filings show his businesses owed at least $315 million, the Times noted, saying they appear to be accurate and that Trump was not required to disclose all of his business activities.

Although the paper does not accuse him of any wrongdoing, the investigation "underscored how much of Mr Trump´s business remains shrouded in mystery."
The probe "also found that Mr Trump´s fortunes depend deeply on a wide array of financial backers, including one he has cited in attacks during his campaign," the Times said.

His lenders include one of the largest banks in China -- which the Republican candidate accuses of being a US economic foe -- and the investment bank Goldman Sachs, which he says influences his Democratic White House rival Hillary Clinton.

As president, the Times said, Trump would be able to make decisions that would have a major influence on his business empire and net worth.

Karachi public hospitals ill-equipped to combat Congo virus

KARACHI: The deadly Congo virus has so far claimed at least five lives in Karachi, but public hospitals in the metropolis appear ill-equipped to battle with the emergency.

According to sources, isolation wards have not been established at any public-sector hospital in Karachi, and it appears that health officials have not yet taken the situation seriously.

Isolation wards have so far not been established at the Jinnah Post-Graduate Medical Centre, Civil Hospital, Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, or any other major public sector health facility.

Sources said administration at different public sectors hospitals are converting Dengue wards into Congo isolation wards, which is in contradiction to international standard operating procedures to prevent the spread of the dengue tick-borne disease.

Meanwhile, the health department has so far also not distributed any gloves, jackets, and any other mandatory safety accessories for the handling of Congo virus patients at public-sector hospitals.

The Crimeanâ€"Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a widespread viral disease that is commonly spread by ticks found on hairy animals.

The situation needs extra attention with Eid-ul-Azha approaching just around the corner, with cattle markets being set up across the country for public to buy sacrificial animals for the religious occasion.

According to Deputy Director JPMC Dr Javaid Jamali, citizens should takes extra precautionary measures while buying sacrificial animals and ensure that they clean their animal with chlorine water and not touch the blood during animal sacrifice on Eid.

ICC to try new no-ball detection technology in Pak-Eng ODIs

Adding more colors of technology to cricket, the International Cricket Council has announced that it would conduct a trial to enable TV umpires instead of field umpires to call no-balls.

The trial will be conducted during the five-match ODI series between Pakistan and England, starting on August 4 and, according to the ICC, the field umpires will not directly call for the front foot no-ball. Any decision regarding the no-balls will be signaled after an instant message from the TV umpires.

"This trial is being conducted in attempt to better understand whether the third umpire is able to use instant replays to call front foot no-balls more accurately in international cricket," said an ICC spokesman.

"The third umpire will be able to judge front foot no-balls within a few seconds of the ball being delivered and communicate this to the on-field umpire,” the spokesman added.

The spokesman further added that during the Pakistan vs England ODI series, the on-field umpire will not call any front foot no-balls without the third umpire's advice, unless the side-on cameras are unavailable.

The spokesman, while explaining the new technology, stated that the four dedicated side-on run-out cameras that are part of the broadcast coverage will be provided on split-screen feed to help the TV umpire judge no-balls.

"The on-field umpires will wear pager watches, which will vibrate as soon as the TV umpire communicates to them that a front foot no-ball has been bowled. If for some reason the signal is not sent through the pager, then the third umpire will use the normal verbal communications system," the spokesman elaborated.

Explaining the idea behind bringing this technology in limited-overs cricket, the ICC has outlined a six-point agenda as a possible outcome for the trials.

The six-point outcome includes:

  1. To identify if the technology set up is fit for the purpose and identify areas to be improved.
  2. To ensure the routines of the 3rd Umpire and Match Referee are appropriate given the additional workload and judgment expectations.
  3. To identify the accuracy and timing issues of the 3rd Umpire judgment and notification.
  4. Identify impact on the on-field umpire's role.
  5. Identify impact on the 3rd Umpire role.
  6. Identify impact on the flow of the game and the game in general.

During the trial period, according to ICC, an SOP has been decided in an attempt to achieve the tasked outcome of the procedure.

The six point SOP on how the trial would work are:

  1. The on-field umpire is not to call any front foot no-balls without 3rd umpire advice.
  2. The third umpire will use technology to monitor every delivery bowled with respect to front foot fairness and call no-ball through to the on-field umpire if there is an infringement.
  3. The 3rd umpire will apply conclusive evidence protocols as they do currently and any benefit of the doubt is with the bowler.
  4. The 'call' will be communicated via vibrating watch that is controlled from the 3rd umpire's room.
  5. The on-field umpire will make decisions like LBW, caught, leg byes, boundaries, and wides in the usual way.
  6. If a late no-ball is advised the on-field umpire will revoke 'out' decisions and call and signal no ball.

Commenting on the decision, the ICC’s senior manager of umpires and referees, Adrian Griffith, said: "This trial is being carried out to ascertain if there is a way in which front foot no balls can be called more accurately and consistently.

"To ensure that the match officials are thoroughly briefed and trained for this trial, the ICC will conduct training sessions with the umpires and match referee in Southampton on Monday and Tuesday," he added.

According to the ICC, the results of this technology trial will be shared with the ICC Cricket Committee, which will advise the ICC on future action.

Daqri Smart Helmet , combining safety and augmented reality for industrial use

Augmented reality is the rage these days, with Pokemon-Go being the most talked about application that uses augmented reality to enhance user experience. However, an American company called Daqri has designed a hard-hat type smart helmet that could change the way workers and engineers at construction sites and industrial environments go about their work.

The helmet comes with an anti-reflective, scratch-resistant safety visor, but hiding inside is some serious tech. It includes a 13 megapixel high-definition camera, 2D target recognition and tracking as well as object/colour recognition and a 4D HUD ? a transparent augmented reality display tweaked for use in the industrial environment.

The helmet is powered by a sixth-generation Intel Core m7 processor and also includes Intel?s RealSense technology to enhance its depth sensing ability, according to information released by the UK Construction Media.

The hardware is utilized using a software program called intellitrack which is able to capture and display information about the user?s surrounding environment.

Brian Mullins, Founder and CEO of Daqri described the Smart Helmet as an entirely new type of human machine interface that will redefine the future of how we work in the industrial world.

Mullins says, his company has ?been working in the medium of augmented reality for the past four years, and what we found was, you just can?t solve the most challenging problems with devices that were designed for consumers.?

Getaway driver involved in Qandeel?s murder

MULTAN: Driver Abdul Basit who had driven Qandeel Baloch?s brother and cousin to Multan in a taxi after the murder took place knew about the plan all along.

Polygraph tests for Abdul Basit revealed that he knew that accused Waseem and Haq Nawaz had planned to kill social media sensation Qandeel Baloch, police said.

On July 15, Basit had allegedly driven the two to Multan from Baloch's ancestral village Shah Saddar Din in Dera Ghazi Khan, around 130 kilometers away. He is reportedly a resident of the same village as that of Baloch.

Waseem and Haq Nawaz had reportedly returned to the village shortly after the murder.

Basit had handed himself over to police on July 27 in Multan.

Earlier, the mother of slain social media icon had claimed that Mufti Qavi, a cleric who made headlines for his controversial pictures with Qandeel, had provoked her son Waseem into murdering her daughter.

Qandeel?s brother Waseem had admitted to strangling her to death for the 'honour of the family'.

Qandeel had shot to fame after her quirky videos and controversial video.

2.4 million in Libya need aid, UN says on World Humanitarian Day

TRIPOLI: The UN used World Humanitarian Day on Friday to plead for help for Libya, saying millions of Libyans and migrants were engulfed in a worsening crisis.

"More than 2.4 million people in Libya are in need of humanitarian assistance," Martin Kobler, the UN secretary-general´s special representative for Libya, said in a statement.

"They lack medicines, vaccinations and suffer from poor hospitalization services. Almost 300,000 children are out of schools and almost 350,000 Libyans are displaced within the country."

Kobler also noted the predicament of more than 270,000 migrants who fled their home countries and are stranded in Libya.

"The humanitarian needs created by the crisis in Libya are enormous and this should serve as an incentive for us to do our utmost to give hope to the people, particularly those in urgent need of humanitarian assistance," he added.

The ouster of Moamer Kadhafi in 2011 plunged Libya into chaos, with rival militias jockeying violently for power.

The latest fighting is centered on the coastal city of Sirte, where pro-government forces are pressing an assault against the jihadist Islamic State group.

Turkish parliament approves Israel deal

ANKARA: The Turkish parliament on Saturday approved a deal to normalise ties with Israel after a delay caused by last month´s attempted coup, state-run media reported.

Lawmakers ratified the agreement to restore relations after a six-year rift before parliament was due to go into summer recess.

Under the deal, Israel will pay Turkey $20 million (17.7 million euros) in compensation for the 2010 raid by Israeli commandos on a Gaza-bound Turkish aid ship that left 10 Turks dead, state-run Anadolu news agency said.

Israel will hand Turkey a "lump sum" within 25 working days of the agreement coming into force, the agency said.
Under the terms of the deal, both sides agreed individual Israeli citizens would not be held liable - either criminally or financially - for the raid, Anadolu reported.

Israeli cabinet ministers approved the deal with Turkey in June but Ankara did not send it to parliament because of time pressure after the July 15 attempted putsch by a rogue military faction.

Now the deal has been approved, the two countries are expected to begin the process of exchanging ambassadors to fully restore diplomatic ties.

The agreement also eases the naval blockade on the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip allowing Turkey to deliver humanitarian aid to Palestinians there.

Former SEAL on Bin Laden raid to forfeit book proceeds

WASHINGTON: The Pentagon has dropped a claim against a former Navy SEAL who wrote about his experiences in the US raid that killed Osama bin Laden, after he agreed to forfeit earnings from the book, his lawyer said Friday.

Matt Bissonnette, who in 2012 published a book about his role in the raid titled "No Easy Day," has finalized a settlement with the US government, Robert Luskin confirmed to AFP.

"Mr Bissonnette has agreed to pay the United States all of his past and future proceeds from the publication of ´No Easy Day,´" Department of Justice spokesperson Nicole Navas said earlier in a statement.

Bissonnette will pay the US government some $6.8 million in book royalties and speaking fees, Luskin said.

The Obama administration had filed a claim against Bissonnette for publishing the book without Pentagon approval and violating non-disclosure agreements.

"After the initial accusations of me leaking all that classified stuff... they found nothing," Bissonnette told the Daily Beast.

"They were just upset with me and wanted to get me one way or another," he added. "For four years, they looked into every little thing. Now... one signature and it all goes away."

The US government had been accused of a double standard for targeting Bissonnette after US officials described the Bin Laden raid in great detail to Mark Boal, the screenwriter for "Zero Dark Thirty," directed by Kathryn Bigelow.

SEALs and other commando units are shrouded in secrecy and, traditionally at least, the special operators have frowned upon talking publicly about past missions.
