JIT formed to question MQM leader Waseem Akhtar

KARACHI: A Joint Investigation Team (JIT) was constituted on Sunday to interrogate Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) leader and party’s nominated candidate for the Karachi mayor slot Waseem Akhtar.

According to the notification issued by SSP investigation, the seven-member JIT has been formed under DSP airport Iftikhar Lodhi.

The team also includes the special investigation officers from five different police stations in the East zone.

There are allegations on Waseem Akhtar of assisting party Chief Altaf Hussain in delivering provocative speeches.

Akhtar, Rauf Siddiqui and other MQM leaders face the same and the cases against them were registered in different police stations of the city. Some speeches were delivered against security institutions after Rangers had raided the MQM headquarters Nine-Zero and its adjoining areas on March 11 last year.

Police had earlier arrested MQM leaders Waseem Akhtar, Rauf Siddiqui, and Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP) Anis Qaimkhani on Tuesday after an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Karachi rejected their bail pleas in the Dr Asim Hussain case.

The three politicians face charges of facilitating the terrorists who were provided medical treatment at Dr Asim’s hospital.
