Qandeel Baloch murder case suspect Mufti Qavi goes into hiding: police

MULTAN: Mufti Abdul Qavi who was nominated as a possible suspect in the Qandeel Baloch murder case has gone in hiding, police said on Monday.

His phone has been switched off and he cannot be traced, police said.

A team has been formed to arrest the cleric who made headlines for appearing in a video with slain social media sensation Qandeel Baloch.

One video showed Qandeel shaking hands with Qavi as she sat on the arm of a sofa by his side. Qavi was suspended from the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee in the controversy following the video posts.

He was nominated in the case through a court order. Others accused in the case Waseem, Haq Nawaz and Basit will be produced in the court today.

Qavi in a press conference held last month denied being involved in the murder. However, Qandeel’s mother in a press statement claimed that the cleric instigated his son Waseem to kill Qandeel as she was ruining the family’s honour.

Waseem, her brother confessed to strangling Qandeel to death in apparent honour-killing. He is in police custody.

The murder took place in July when Qandeel was sleeping at her house in Muzaffabad area, Multan, her parents said in a statement recorded to the police. Her parents were sleeping on the rooftop.  

Prior to her death Baloch, whose real name was Fauzia Azeem, spoke of worries about her safety and had appealed to the interior ministry to provide her with security for protection.

In Facebook posts, Baloch, 26, spoke of trying to change "the typical orthodox mindset" of people in Pakistan. She faced frequent abuse and death threats but continued to post provocative pictures and videos.

The so-called 'honour-killing' has sent shockwaves across the country and triggered an outpouring of grief on social media for Baloch.

Peshawar newborn kidnappings: Police arrest couple who sold infant

PESHAWAR: Police arrested on Monday a couple who sold their own newborn for 100,000 rupees in Peshawar.

Police said that the couple is parents to an infant girl and their arrest came during investigation of the case related to kidnapping of newborn babies from hospitals.

The parents of the baby girl will be presented before a court, police said, adding that the couple was arrested on a tip-off by under custody gang involved in Kidnappings.

Police on Friday had arrested a 7-member gang which kidnapped newborn babies from hospitals. At least five women and two men are part of the gang.

The gang would take away newborn babies and hand over dead babies to parents. The kidnapped babies were then sold for Rs70,000 to Rs300,000, SSP Abbas Marwat had said.

According to him, female doctors and nurses were also a part of the gang. The criminals had already sold nine babies and one baby was recovered by security forces.

One person injured in axe and shooting attack in Cologne: newspaper

BERLIN: One person was injured in a knife and shooting attack in Cologne city center in the early hours of Monday, German newspaper Express reported, adding that two suspects were on the run.

The paper said several people had told the police shortly before 4 a.m. (0200 GMT) that three or four people seemed to be having problems with another man. Eyewitnesses reported seeing men attacking each other with axes, Express said on its website.

A man who sustained a stab wound tried to flee in his car but other men shot at him, though they only hit the car.

Two possible perpetrators were later stopped by police. The motive for the attack is unknown, the newspaper reported.

Indian forces martyr two youths as Kashmiris observe 'Black Day' on Aug 15

SRINAGAR: Two Kashmiris were martyred in firing by Indian security forces on Monday as Kashmiris in the occupied region observe ?Black day? on the August 15.

Indian troops martyred two Kashmiri youths in the Baramulla district, alleging they were militants.

The Kashmiris on the both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) are observing ?Black Day? on Indian Independence Day. It was reported that on the request of the Huriyat leaders, black flags were hoisted up at the buildings and houses.

The Indian security forces arrested Syed Ali Gilani and Mir Waiz Umer Farooq.

The valley is currently facing a complete shutterdown as the curfew entered into the 38th day.

District commissioners have been instructed that no Indian flag should be raised in any part of the occupied territory.

Several rallies will also take place today to protest against the Indian occupation.

Observance of the Indian Independence Day as black day is to express extreme indignation and hatred against India for forcibly keeping the area under its unlawful and forcible occupation since last 69 years and to condemn the ongoing fresh wave of state terrorism and genocide of innocent Kashmiris in the valley, organisers said.

People in Indian-occupied Kashmir (IoK) while flouting curfew and other restrictions on Sunday had celebrated Pakistan's Independence Day with great zeal by staging massive pro-Pakistan rallies and demonstrations and hoisting Pakistani flags in every nook and cranny of the territory.

Huge contingents of Indian army, police and paramilitary personnel were deployed in every district and town across the territory to enforce restrictions on the Kashmiris.

The violence and protests in the occupied region witnessed an escalation when freedom fighter Burhan Wani was martyred by Indian forces on the July 8.

Indian security forces have resorted to firing pellets to disperse protesters injuring over 3500, and rendering some blind.

Since July, dozens of Kashmiri youth have lost their eyesight after Indian forces resorted to using pellet guns on unarmed civilians.
