One person injured in axe and shooting attack in Cologne: newspaper

BERLIN: One person was injured in a knife and shooting attack in Cologne city center in the early hours of Monday, German newspaper Express reported, adding that two suspects were on the run.

The paper said several people had told the police shortly before 4 a.m. (0200 GMT) that three or four people seemed to be having problems with another man. Eyewitnesses reported seeing men attacking each other with axes, Express said on its website.

A man who sustained a stab wound tried to flee in his car but other men shot at him, though they only hit the car.

Two possible perpetrators were later stopped by police. The motive for the attack is unknown, the newspaper reported.

Indian forces martyr two youths as Kashmiris observe 'Black Day' on Aug 15

SRINAGAR: Two Kashmiris were martyred in firing by Indian security forces on Monday as Kashmiris in the occupied region observe ?Black day? on the August 15.

Indian troops martyred two Kashmiri youths in the Baramulla district, alleging they were militants.

The Kashmiris on the both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) are observing ?Black Day? on Indian Independence Day. It was reported that on the request of the Huriyat leaders, black flags were hoisted up at the buildings and houses.

The Indian security forces arrested Syed Ali Gilani and Mir Waiz Umer Farooq.

The valley is currently facing a complete shutterdown as the curfew entered into the 38th day.

District commissioners have been instructed that no Indian flag should be raised in any part of the occupied territory.

Several rallies will also take place today to protest against the Indian occupation.

Observance of the Indian Independence Day as black day is to express extreme indignation and hatred against India for forcibly keeping the area under its unlawful and forcible occupation since last 69 years and to condemn the ongoing fresh wave of state terrorism and genocide of innocent Kashmiris in the valley, organisers said.

People in Indian-occupied Kashmir (IoK) while flouting curfew and other restrictions on Sunday had celebrated Pakistan's Independence Day with great zeal by staging massive pro-Pakistan rallies and demonstrations and hoisting Pakistani flags in every nook and cranny of the territory.

Huge contingents of Indian army, police and paramilitary personnel were deployed in every district and town across the territory to enforce restrictions on the Kashmiris.

The violence and protests in the occupied region witnessed an escalation when freedom fighter Burhan Wani was martyred by Indian forces on the July 8.

Indian security forces have resorted to firing pellets to disperse protesters injuring over 3500, and rendering some blind.

Since July, dozens of Kashmiri youth have lost their eyesight after Indian forces resorted to using pellet guns on unarmed civilians.

The alleged gangster was under treatment in a private hospital. He was arrested in injured condition, police said.

Accused Bahram Baloch was affiliated to the Arshad Pappu and Ghaffar Zikri groups, police said

He was injured on Sunday due to firing of a rival gang. One of his accomplices fled, while another was killed, police said.

Police said that the accused was involved in murder, extortion, and attacks on police.

Pak-India at proxy war in Afghanistan, says Forbes

Pakistan and India are at proxy war in Afghanistan, claimed the renowned American publication Forbes in a recent report.

The publication weaved its assertion in light of a recent event in which the US command demanded from India that it should increase military aid to the Afghan forces.

The report focused on the last week's meeting that included Commander Gen John Nicholson, who heads the US operations in Afghanistan, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar and Defence Secretary G Mohan Kumar.

The report contended there was certainly more to the meeting which considered regional strategic issues. ?This is a joint war command for deciding India?s course in the proxy war? it said.

The US considers India role in the training of the Afghan forces as crucial owing to the fact that India still uses Russian war technology and so do the Afghan forces, who have Russian helicopters.

General Nicholson had stated: ?We are building the Afghan Air Forces as a critical component of security. That [the Afghan air force] is built on several airframes. Some are older Russian models integrating newer ones. We need more aircraft, and we are looking at how we can meet that need.?

The report said that India and the US in collaboration want action against Haqqani network, Daesh (Islamic State), Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Jaish-I-Mohammed.

It is pertinent to mention here that the US cut off $300 million in aid for the Pakistani military and tied it to operation against the Haqqani network. This aid was crucial for Pakistan in its fight against terrorism.

It must be noted that Pakistan has always denied the allegations against it and always tried to distance itself from the internal matters of Afghanistan.
